Alright, so you already know my thoughts on this video as I already stated everything when we called, but I’ll touch on a couple of my thoughts again here.
1- Awesome stuff guys. All the clips from both of you are mind boggling, and the playing field in terms of skill is perfectly matched this time around. Combining the work of essentially my two favourite builders in the community obviously made for a fantastic end product!
2- In terms of some of the highlights for me, I loved the sliding ball lifts, flipping track path, and the sliding track domino system from Lyle. From Nathan, I especially loved the structure at 1:27 and the ball path splitters at 2:55, but honestly I was impressed by the layouts and pathing of all the clips, and that goes for Lyle as well.
3- In terms of who I voted for, I was back and forth a bit initially, but I ended up deciding on dominoes. My reasoning for doing so, however, is different from TJ Domino and Lily, because their arguments against the machines are illogical. There is plenty of variety in the types of motions, path/connection systems, and mechanisms Lyle used in his clips, and even the most basic analysis of his clips should make that evident. Simply saying “oH tHeY aLl uSe mOvInG tRaCks tHo” isn’t enough of an argument to prove a lack of variety overall. That aside, what made the dominoes stand out to me more than the machines was the level of design and innovation for a domino project. In any chain reaction video, the one thing that will always blow me away is an interesting yet distinct setup or trick. Although Lyle is obviously amazing at this and this video is no exception, I rarely ever see this in domino videos, as I feel it’s difficult to create domino elements nowadays that stand out as unique without the use of theming (not including machine based domino tricks). Nathan’s setups have so much to offer in terms of new designs and ideas, and they’re presented in such a clean and satisfying way that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to not love them. It’s almost as if Nathan’s style is the domino version of how I strive to build my machines, so it panders to essentially everything I love about chain reactions.
All in all, fantastic work guys! Definitely worth the wait, and I’m already excited for next year’s edition! (also I see you trying to pander to me with the domino gears in that last clip Nathan)

No matter how good the domino setups are, I think they will never beat machines. Because dominoes are so simple, there are limited possibilities what you can make. But Nathan showed again, that it's still possible to come up with new ideas. In machines everything always has to be original and you can use whatever items you want. Your machines definitely did not disappoint. They are always so beautifully designed and smooth that I will have to vote for machines. Literally everything in this video was so amazing that if I mentioned everything, this comment would take so long to write. Great job both of you. This was one of the best videos of 2018.

I'm so glad you're keeping this annual despite the fact that your unloading has become so rare. It's also nice to see the advancement in the dominoe setups that are against you (as I feel they get better by the year).
Maybe it's just materials, but I can never get over how accurate, professional, clean, and precise your machines are, but they are still complex and contain new, interesting never before seen tricks (that I've seen anyway). You and TI11 are the only one's who seem to successfully accomplish both the complex and "the fun, interesting, somewhat understandable, and engaging" style. Your building is certainly iconic in this community.

I love these videos because of the complete balance of machines and dominoes, and they were both fully entertaining. My favorite from Lyle was probably the clip with the tracks sliding back and forth, and my favorite from Nathan was the one with the elevations. Awesome job you guys!

    Well it's about heckin' time.
I absolutely LOVE this video. There were so many intricate, mind-boggling machine tricks and artsy, satisfying dominoes. I've got to say, each of you did very well in representing the many aspects of your art form. It was very hard to ultimately decide (I actually cast the very first vote :D), but I finally decided on dominoes. The main reason is because I thought a lot of machine clips were very similar, but the domino clips had more variety and that made it more memorable (It's just my opinion though, and as a domino builder myself I'm probably skipping over a lot of really good machine stuff. I don't mean to be discouraging in any way, but I haven't really seen a lot of domino - centric comments on these videos. I'm just placing my two cents in, so don't get too riled up about it). Anyway, on to my main point: I felt that the domino clips were more original. Out of the 8 machine clips, 4 of them had gears and 5 of them had moving tracks as part of the main trick (I'm not counting the tilting board as I fell that it is more of an inclined plane trick than a track trick). In contrast, Mardominoes only replicates similar ideas in the same clip (i.e., 4:14 , the lead up to the structure at 4:23 , and the field design on the glass panes at 1:37). One could argue that there are two octagon structures (1:18 and 4:23), or two domino designs (2:54 and 4:23) but both of these are in different shapes with different color schemes around them. He's one of the only domino builders still around that are always presenting tons of fresh ideas to the community. Not to throw you completely under the bus, there's also lots of interesting and complicated machine tricks that I enjoy watching too (mostly 3:28 and 3:36 , which were my favorites). I just felt that there was more unity to Mardominoes' set ups, and that was probably why I liked them more. Then again, I am definitely not unbiased in this analysis as I am a domino builder myself. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I'm probably going to watch the main video again now. :D

I'm really glad you said those things, even if you felt like you were being too critical. I'm not mad at all about what you said! In fact, I kind of agree. I definitely noticed that I tend to reuse a lot of the same concepts in videos. Especially when I discover a new technique or get a new material, I love experimenting with it as much as possible. That explains why there are two clips that use the flexing parallelogram technique (0:20 and 3:37) and four clips with gears.
Also, I completely agree with everything you said about MarDominoes. Those are the exact reasons I wanted to work with him so much on this project. I just knew that everything he made would be outstanding, totally original, and wildly entertaining. So glad you enjoyed his clips, I know I did.

Great job, Lyle! I'm really happy that you went through with Dominoes vs Machines again this year! It's a tradition I always appreciate, and you brought your A-game once again! So without further ado, here are my opinions on tricks.
Gear/Track Trick at Beginning: First of all, I loved the use of the gyroscope! Such a creative way to start a machine and it looked really cool as well! I'd love to see the gyroscope used in more videos. The gear trick was impressive and I liked how it had a clean, smooth motion to it. It reminded me of that really intricately designed trick from the Bet Losing Machine but without a motor.
Chain Autotilt: Really clever idea! I'm shocked that you were able to get this to work as elegantly as you did! I enjoyed the "Is it Possible" aspect of the trick. You have a gift with Knex chains, my friend. Also, I love the little ball launch at the end.
Autotilt with Levers: Probably my favorite trick in the video. Really creative and clean and smart move using a soccer ball for this trick, lol. It reminded me of your tilting board trick from the Bet Losing machine. I actually attempted an idea similar to this a while ago but couldn't get the rods to work the way I wanted them to so hats off to you for pulling this off. I additionally love the little spice up with the pool balls rolling through the levers to create pathways for the ping pong balls at the end.
Gear Chain/Piston: Ooh, combining a piston with a moving gear chain and a ball catapult? This may be one of my favorite mechanisms of yours yet. If only those darn motors weren't so slow, lol.
Sliding Knex Ball Lifts: Ooh, this trick is so clean, how the two tracks and the ball lifts all move simultaneously. It's perfect for machine compilations. I additionally love the ball lift at the end.
Flipping Track: I had to rewatch this clip a few times to really understand it. This is a really cool and intricate setup, how the ball rolls across the track and then the 2 ball falls directly onto the flipping track and the same mechanism that dropped the two ball kicks the orange ball while the two ball rolls over to pull a lever to drop a cup that the orange ball will eventually roll in? Very impressive multi-use contraption. I'd love to see more tricks like these. Also, I love the track at the beginning that tilts itself up. No extraneous steps or anything. So good.
Sliding Track Dominoes: First off, I really like the train at the beginning of the clip the dumps the ball off along with the launcher shooting the six ball. It's nice to see you using creative transitions rather than just basic balls and tracks. As for the trick itself, it's a great spice up of basic trackimoes. The sliding movement of the tracks is so satisfying as well.
Gear Tilt: You and your gears, lol. While the tilting board trick is my favorite clip in this video, this one is a close second! I love watching both sides of the lever: on one side you have a gear moving into positions to spin other gears as needed, and on the other, you have a complicated Trix Trax setup. The two sides cooperate really well, and I was really impressed by how intricate this was but also by how well it worked. The smoothness of the lever also makes this trick one of your best.
Overall, amazing as expected. Lots of great tricks that reflected your style perfectly. I was impressed especially by the dominoes. Nathan did a really great job making the domino clips stand out rather than just being what domino community members have seen a hundred times already. I'm really happy you came back to DvMs this year and hope you'll keep it going to at least 8. I love watching your clean but complicated style and hope that you will continue to make building a priority.
Also, I'd still love a BTS video of some sort if you find the time to edit one, lol

THIS IS BEYOND INCREDIBLE!!! You and MarDominoes just created one of the best videos of all time! Every clip absolutely BLEW MY MIND!!! I basically LOVED this!
Let me highlight some of my favorite machine clips:
0:20- I remember this clip from the livestream. This clip is so smooth with the tilting motion!
0:36- This is GENIUS! I LOVE how the chain tilts based on where the tube is! Incredible job!
0:45- WOW!! This reminds me of the shifting autotilt board from the Bet-Losing Machine, only better, because two balls rush down and destroy the segments at the end. Very, very clever!
1:54- How do you come up with these?! I REALLY enjoyed this one! All the gears and levers slowly tilting and turning to catch each ball and put it in its place is EXTREMELY satisfying.
2:31- This clip is AMAZING because of how smooth and swift it is. Very smart!
The domino clips were of course amazing too, with the signature satisfying and colorful style of MarDominoes.
Overall, you both did INCREDIBLE, but in the end, I vote machines.
Basically, this is ASTONISHING!! Keep building amazing things, jackofallspades98 and MarDominoes!

      @jackofallspades98  Před 5 lety

YES! I'm surprised someone actually noticed the similarity to the zigzag board from Bet-Losing Machine! This trick was definitely inspired by that in many ways, but mostly it was inspired by the concept of having the angled slopes on either side move along with the board as it tilts. Then I thought of the idea of adding the billiard balls after the initial ping pong ball, which really completed the idea.
As for how I thought of 1:54, it all started with the combination of a gear chain and a piston. I thought, "what if the source of the piston and the end of the piston were always connected by a series of gears?" Then it was just a matter of figuring out what kind of motion that generated, and what else I could do with it. Eventually I added a ball lift to one end, and some tracks to the other gears.
So glad you enjoyed it! Reading comments like this are what really keep me motivated to continue building, so of course I will "keep building amazing things" as you said!

Lyle, you’re amazing. 2:26 that was a neat effect! I do have to agree with what TJ Domino said though. Although your clips were great and I very much enjoyed them, I thought a lot of them were similar types of tricks. I think that’s maybe just your style though with lots of tracks, gears, and ping pong balls. Nothing wrong with that, but I’ll admit I prefer machines with more unique objects. Just my personal preference though.
MarDominoes’ had a bit more variation and also I’m biased cause I just like dominoes more (sorry machine builders.. come at me lol). Anyone who builds dominoes or machines is going to be slightly biased to some extent. In some ways I wish I were a full out machine builder so I could fully appreciate the intricacies of your machines. Not saying that I don’t appreciate them, (that’s definitely not the case... they are amazing and seriously you’re genius!), but if I also built machines I’d probably appreciate each trick on a whole new level and be able to say more about it in this comment xD Overall amazing video!!
Also reading the comments here has been really refreshing. I’ve missed reading comments as detailed and critical as these from the inner domino/machine community. Thanks for posting!

Being biased is totally fine! And I completely agree with everything you said. Nathan is absolutely incredible with innovating and creating new designs and color combinations in every single thing he makes. Nothing wrong with voting for dominoes in this round, in fact that's why I asked Nathan in the first place. I wanted to collaborate with someone whom I had a legitimate chance of losing to. And of course it's a privilege working with one of the best in the game. Basically I'm just saying it would be an honor to lose in Round V.

Amazing job both of you! Machines won, not any bias in that choice lol, but it was definitely a close game than I thought it was gonna be. With that in mind I definitely like it Lyle when you make clips more like 2:26 than ones like 1:55. While they are both good don't get me wrong, the shorter and more unique clips really stick with me and impress me more than the longer creative (and more cliche in my opinion) multi-use clips. If I'm being honest clips like 2:26 shock me more and get me to rewatch the video while 2:26 groups in my mind with all the other multi-use gear and track clips you've made in the past. And while they are more "complex" I certainly feel you get more creative and create better tricks with ones like 2:26.
Favorite Machine Clips: 0:37, 2:26, 2:31, 3:28 (easily my favorite)
    Favorite Domino Clips: 1:18, 1:33, 3:53, 4:24
Overall really close competition but Lyle pulls out with a win due to bias and the fantastic clip at 3:28

      @jackofallspades98  Před 5 lety +1

Interesting points here for sure. It might surprise you that by far my least favorite clip in this video is 1:55. The fact that it's basically the same thing three times in a row seemed really boring once I got around to the editing stage. I also really love the clip with the zigzag board because even though it's long-ish, it still feels like a brand-new idea, and I hardly ever play around with tilting boards these days. Your main point about the short, flashy clips is definitely true, though. 2:26 and 2:31 are some of my favorites as well, just because the motion is so quick and unexpected.

3:27 was certainly the most eye-widening part of this video. What in the machine is holding back the tracks so subtly that such a little nudge causes the whole assembly to be released? I don't see anything
I don't think I can be bothered to make a decision on who to vote for. This was a completely fair matchup and I enjoyed both sides equally. There are concepts in a lot of the clips from both dominoes and machines that I really like the idea of and think are very appealing. I personally think some of the execution was a bit lacking for a few of the clips. Most of the video was really missing a sense of excitement, especially compared to Part III. Part of this could be from a rather mundane music choice though. Anyways, great job with your contraptions from both of you; this is a really fantastic video!

See how at 3:31, at the base of each sliding track there's a little extension going out, then back toward the wall? (The orange and white K'nex pieces attached to the yellow rod) When the track is in the upright position, it hooks around a block, but when it gets pushed over slightly, the hook disengages and the counterweight takes over. Hope that helps!
