  • For the 6th straight year, I go head to head with one of my favorite domino builders from the community in the annual Dominoes vs. Machines collaboration. This year, my opponent is ‪@bpdolesdominoes4‬, one of the most creative domino artists in the game, but I think my machines can beat him!

    Watch Rounds I - V! • Dominoes vs. Machines
Slow Motion Compilation: • Slow Motion Compilatio...
    CLIP STATS:
Most fails: Double Rolling Double Pendulums (31 fails)
Fewest fails: Sliding Flexing Parallelograms (1 fail)
Most frustrating: Planetary Gear with Magnet Tracks
Most fun: Intermediate Axis of Rotation Zigzag Board
    Favorite: Centrifugal Force Box Trapeze
Longest Build Time: Ruler launch (with Mystery Box finale) (9 days)
Quickest Build Time: Twisting Gear Path & Extending Curved Scissor Arm (2 days)
I am unspeakably pleased with how my machine clips turned out this year. I put a lot of work into making sure that there was a ton of variety across all 9 machine ideas. There is variety in scale; some tricks use a big foam globe ball, while others only use a small marble. There is variety in trick type; some tricks are gear tricks, some are magnet tricks, some are launching tricks, some are something else entirely. There is variety in materials used; some clips use Trix Track or marble track, others use Hot Wheels or Skyrail, and others use custom rails made out of straws. There is variety in pacing; some tricks happen in an instant and if you blink you miss them, others take their time and build suspense. There is variety in dimensions; some tricks are flat and expansive, while others tower over two feet above the table. There is variety in complexity; some tricks are straightforward, while others have a bit more to unpack during a second viewing. I put a lot of work into making sure that each clip looked and felt unique, recognizable, and visually different from the rest in some way. I hope I was able to achieve that.

Lots of the machine clips from Dominoes vs. Machines: Round VI need to be viewed in slow motion in order to be fully appreciated. Luckily for you, I made a compilation of all the slow-motion footage I recorded of the really fast tricks. Enjoy! czcams.com/video/D9PmLqeICCE/video.html

Lyle, I gotta tell you, these were some of the best machine tricks I have ever seen. My eyes and mouth were wide open during this entire video. Like, I didn't even know physics could allow some of this stuff to happen. My expectations were pretty high as they usually are whenever I watch one of your videos, and you still managed to exceed them. Here's what I thought of each trick, ranked from least favorite to favorite. I do not want to depreciate any of these clips because each one is absolutely incredible, but I want to emphasize the impressiveness of the clips that really stood out to me.
    9) Twisting Gear Path: I know you've tried to not do as many track tricks these past couple years, but whenever you do, they're always amazing, and this one is no exception. It definitely reminds me of the spiced up Pitagora Suichi trick, and it just looks really elegant and smooth, which I praise you for.
    8) Sliding Flexing Parallelograms: You and your flexing parallelograms, lol. I really liked what you did here-you put flexing parallelograms on wheels and then having them move at the same time in different directions to pick up a ball. It reminded me a lot of Doodlechaos's Is it Possible videos, like most tricks that have balls roll over moving tracks do. I really respect your decision not to use the tracks in the starting positions either, as a lot of builders would have done that as a proof of concept that the tracks could be used more than once without really thinking twice about it. I like how you elected not to because it would have been a waste of the viewer's time and it allowed the trick to get straight to the interesting part. Overall, despite being near the bottom of my list, this is still an extremely impressive trick, and if a trick like this ends up on the lower end of a ranking list of all the tricks in a machine video, then you know that you have a really awesome machine video.
    7) Extending Curved Scissor Arm: The second the video transitioned to this clip and I saw that huge Knex structure, I knew I was in for a treat. I really liked the motion and cleanliness of this trick, considering how such a complex Knex structure like that one could have looked janky and disoriented. I also liked how you used the gear in both the starting and ending position, spinning the gear in smooth ways that didn't waste any of the viewer's time, and I also liked the way you pulled the smaller gear out of the way after rotating it. Not to mention the sheer massiveness of the scissor lift is amazing enough on its own, even if you hadn't opted to include a multi-use gear. As someone who has just started to get into gear tricks like these, I really liked this clip.
    6) Ruler Launch: Gosh darn it Lyle, now you made my PVP Pipe Launch from 50CRT look like garbage. How you managed to summon the courage to pull this trick off amazes me. It reminded me of the Laundry Bag Launch from Key Finder, except if the laundry bag was also launched with it and used with a track. I can't imagine how challenging it must have been to execute this, but however hard it was, your hard work paid off. I remember you mentioning in your BLM BTS that you'd always wanted to use that ruler toy, and you've done a remarkable job with it. I also really liked how you ended the video with a really well-made box rather than just doing something generic to end the video like a ball falling into a cup. It's definitely my favorite ending to a DvMs episode yet, although that ball launch into the camera from Round 4 was also pretty sweet.
    5) Planetary Gears with Magnet Tracks: I really enjoyed how you expanded off of Joel's Wheel of Life trick from Reactica. You took a great concept and expanded it to its max, attaching two tracks to both sides. It was really fun watching the track spin around as it progressively became longer, and I also liked how you got the black gear to spin as it moved in a circle the way you did in the R&L machine as well as how you actually had the weight attach itself to a magnet offscreen to keep rotating the gear. It was also satisfying the way the gear would kind of "place an order" for a track whenever it knocked a rod aside and when it came back to that same point, the gear would pick up the track like it was going through a drive-thru. I really liked the aesthetic of the black circular track as well; how did you make that? My only issue with this trick is the change in speed in the system at 0:58, which I imagine probably wasn't possible to do without due to the ongoing change in weight and constraints. Aside from that, you have a really awesome conceptual trick, especially because you used a Domino World museum ball.
    4) Double Track Double Pendulums: This trick absolutely blew my mind. I actually missed it the first time through because I was so surprised by the previous trick, but when I came back and saw how you managed to swoop two tracks simultaneously and put the two tracks together, and then spin two tracks, all within an instant, I was amazed. I don't even know how you were able to conceive of this, let alone build it. This trick is ingenious and I love the motion and also how the little violet cup pops up under the tracks. Definitely the greatest trick I've ever seen where the entire motion occurs that quickly. Also, is that green ball Steve's?
    3) Knex Track Dominoes: As a fan of trackimo tricks, I loved this trick. I didn't know that such a trick was even possible to do. It's so cool how the dominoes look like they're throwing the tracks into position. I especially liked how you used the dominoes as a sominod after, how you launched the 1 ball so smoothly and subtlely into the orange pipe, and the use of the Earth ball. In the future, I would love to see more track/domino tricks from you.
    2) Centrifugal Force Box Trapeze: Machine tricks really don't get much better than this one. This is a trick that combines wow factor, intricate machine concepts, and multiuse elements together really well. Merely launching and rolling the box over could have been a trick on its own, but then you launched the box again. Everything about this trick is just...wow. The timing of the lever at 2:00 was also really impressive...I imagine that probably failed often. I also especially liked how the ball you used was the transition both in and out of the clip. This trick reminded me of the descending domino trick from 50CRT, and I absolutely love it. Also, that red domino flying offscreen at 2:01, lol.
    1) Intermediate Axis of Rotation Zig Zag Board: 2018 Lyle: "I'm going to launch a wooden mallet into position to launch a ball and everyone is going to be amazed" 2019 Lyle: "Hold my lemonade" The second I saw that hammer I knew that the machine was going to do something absolutely remarkable, and my mind was blown when you launched the board. You definitely took the concept of launching stuff into the air to a new level. Not only is the mere idea of launching an entire board with a marble path insane, but you also flipped it with the marble still inside, not to mention how even though the board is moving so wildly and freely, it landed absolutely perfectly where it needed to. This trick is just beautiful, and I also loved how the board flipping worked so well with the music (which goes great with this video btw). Also, the tracks made of straws were a nice touch.
Conclusion: The standards for producing good machine clips have increased astronomically over the past few years and making solid, impressive machine tricks has just gotten harder and harder. Sometimes even great, conceptual tricks that require a great deal of thought and effort from the builder generally aren't that impressive anymore for this reason. However, despite these high standards, you still managed to put together an incredible set of machine clips; some of the best anyone has ever seen. This is definitely your best episode (of Dominoes vs Machines, especially because you managed to finish all nine of these masterpieces of clips by November 3rd. It's apparent that you put everything you had into making this video great, and you succeeded. The tricks had a lot of wow factor elements to them but also combined them with amazing concepts. The ways you executed them were also spectacular and were in ways that only you could have been pulled off. I especially liked how you didn't waste a lot of the viewer's time and kept the premise of each clip focused on the trick. I saw a lot of inspiration from other projects in this video, including 50CRT, but every idea felt completely original. I remember after watching the flying mallet trick from #JOAS last year that you had tapped into a whole new level of advanced chain reaction building, and this project feels like you've expanded your style into that level. I'm looking forward to watching the Making Connections episode for this project so I can take a closer look at this project. I really liked how you made a video showcasing these clips in slow motion, and I would love to see a fail compilation if you had time to make one, as well as know the order of when you built these clips. Overall, this video definitely solidifies your spot as my favorite chain reaction artist, and I already cannot wait to see what you do for projects in the future.

  • @OfficialSillypooDominoes17

This is the first year where I can’t come to a decision between whether I like dominoes or machines more, which is a really good thing, because the video can be appreciated much more for being a well-balanced collaboration rather than two builders competing, which is really what it is meant to be and what it should be treated as by viewers, I would say. The styles for both dominoes and machines were very resemblant of Round 5’s but definitely improved upon them as they felt much more engaging and interesting to watch; I felt some clips in Round 5 felt a bit stale. Brady’s style of doing colors was really cohesive throughout the video and he definitely has a unique and special way of looking at them that no one else does(the sunset clip is very memorable)and of course Lyle has some pretty rad standout tricks which are guaranteed to have you failing NNN, all of which compile into what’s certainly the best episode yet; well done to both of you - this video is really a fantastic highlight of your own strengths of building!

The premise of the trick is playing around with the intermediate axis of rotation. (A rotating block is stable around the longest axis and the shortest axis, but not the intermediate axis) I knew that I wanted to have that small block of wood get launched, and flip [X] times on the short axis and [Y] times on the long axis. The specific numbers weren't important, as long as 1) the landing position was different than the starting position, and 2) the amount of rotations and the landing location were always consistent. I did get lucky when I was able to zero in on the perfect consistent launch after only a few trials. But once I did, this trick was very consistent. Only 5 fails on that clip, only 2 of which were the board launching improperly. I even managed to get it to work several more times, which you can see in the slow motion compilation (link in description!)
