  • I've built a few tricks in the past that feature centrifugal force, but it's still a super under-explored genre of machine trick with a lot of potential for awesome tricks, so I wanted to see what kind of things I could come up with! And who better to team up with than ‪@TheContraptionKing‬, one of my favorite machine builders!

Centrifugal force is a really cool concept, and it felt like such an unexplored realm of chain reaction art, yet it was still surprisingly difficult to think of ideas! But what ended up being the most reliable way of coming up with stuff was by combining centrifugal force with one other common machine element, like "Centrifugal Force + Gears" or "Centrifugal Force + Domino Line". The other challenge with this theme is that centrifugal force is most commonly seen in only two orientations: horizontal ("merry-go-round style") and vertical ("ferris wheel style"). I tried to be mindful of having a good balance in my clips between the two, and I'm happy that I succeeded: there are three horizontal orientations. and two vertical orientations. And I'm pleased with the amount of variety in the clips as well; the first two clips I built were the Swinging Bridge and Centrifugal Gears, both of which were horizontally oriented, and used the same board. But after that, I did a few vertically-oriented ones, including a more acrobatic spectacle one, and one where the spinning board rolls instead of rotating in place. And I finished off the project with a large clip with a lot of steps.
This collaboration has been in progress for quite a while, actually! I started my first clip (Swinging Bridge) back in February, but it got put on hold because of Domino Masters Machine, my collab with Joel (Machineland), and the Sylvania project (Book-Opening Machine). Eventually, I was able to get back to finishing up my clips during June. Very happy for people to finally see this video, we've been waiting a while!

OH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS! THAT WAS INCREDIBLE! THOSE ROTATING TRICKS WERE SOMETHING I'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE! NICE WORK!

The sorting system trick was easily one of my favorite tricks I've ever seen you make. I love how you dump everything into the center of the Lazy Susan before you start to spin it - it really brings out the premise of sorting the marbles from the billiard balls. The easier option that many builders probably would have done would have been to start the clip with everything already in the center, but having the ball chain that dumps everything onto the Lazy Susan gives this trick a lot more character and creates a story within the machine - like it feels like the machine is actually accomplishing something in addition to being an aesthetically pleasing trick. The motion itself is also great - I love how the balls stumble out of the ring as a result of the centrifugal force. Not to ignore the other tricks though! The swinging bridge was another all-time favorite of mine - I don't know if you ever saw the video I filmed where I would quickly spin a Newton's Cradle around to make the outer balls fly out a little bit - this was an idea I'd wanted to use in a machine but never knew how it could be incorporated, and this trick presents that concept as a machine trick perfectly! The unwrapping box and centrifugal lock tricks were great as well. I am excited to see what you made for Reactica this year and to see what you will make for DvMs 9 if you are doing that this year.

Having a part in the sorting system clip that actually scrambled the balls randomly was something I knew was essential from the very beginning. Like you said, it makes it feel like it actually accomplishes something. What's the point of a sorting system if the order the balls enter is predetermined?
Oh and yes of course I'm planning to do DvM9!

Yes! What a collab. Both your guys tricks are always so incredible and original.
Loved the trick at 1:37 with the balls and cups!

I'm so happy that this collab happened! You guys are two of my favourite machine builders and the idea of taking an effect that has been mostly unexplored within chain reaction art and coming up with a bunch of ideas around it is pretty awesome. Every clip was amazing but my favourite tricks would have to be the spinning trapeze, the resetting dominoes, the double ping pong ball launch and the ball sorting trick.

1:45 this clip is my favorite, firstly… ball sequences. 🥺 secondly, it’s so smooth, i love how the marbles roll off the spinner

So intricate and wonderful. Every one should be followed by a slow motion replay.

Clips at 0:19 and 1:09 STILL give me chills. Easily two of the most artistically impressive ideas from you, and both demonstrate centrifugal force in such clear and unique ways!

love me a good experimental machine video, glad y’all are finding exciting concepts in machines and I especially love this one since at its core it’s so simple so you pretty much had a completely clean slate to stem from. As much as I want to call this video a base for crazier ideas to come out of centrifugal force, there are some pretty complex things here so I’m interested to see how else people are going to explore the motion, if at all. Either way this was a fun watch with lots of nifty lil ideas !!

Dude this was such a cool video! You were absolutely right about this being a concept with untapped potential, because you guys blew me away repeatedly while watching this! The concepts all branching from the one idea were just so well done and I absolutely loved this video! Keep up the great work :D

I agree! It was especially stressful because Zane's finale clip (the sign revealer) was actually built *before* the sorting system clip, so I just had to hope that the balls sorted themselves in the right order so that the black 8 ball exited, so that the transition matched!
