- What’s going on guys, welcome back to tapecknows and the last video for 2020!
I decided to change the sprockets and chain on my grom. I haven’t cleaned them since my ride in Salisbury when it got covered in mud. So I knew it was time.
The sprockets were still in good condition and just needs a good clean. I’m changing to a 428 chain & sprockets (14t front and 37t rear). It definitely picks up the acceleration and it’s easier to get the front wheel up.
428 DID Chain - amzn.to/2NEKXOC
37T Rear Sprocket - amzn.to/2NEKXOC
428 Front Sprocket 14T - amzn.to/3pyWT1G
I hope you guys enjoy the video! Please remember to like, share and subscribe 🏍💨💨Ride Safe and advanced happy new year!

Set it in geer to stop the spinning while tightening/untightening front sprocket.
With wheel unpinned, you can remove the chain (just pick it up off the sprocket) and reinstall new while it's still linked whole.
Genius!
Loving the Grom vids hope to see more mods/ work done to it !!!
Thank you man, it's slowly getting there!
Great video, very clear shots and angles. You make the process look easy! Thanks for uploading. :)
Thanks man, I appreciate it!
superb thanks. got to do mine soon so dead helpful
Glad it helped!
love your videos bro
Thanks Øyvind, I appreciate that 👊🏼
More vids we need more grom!
I’ll try record all my riding soon!

Wow, best video on the net for changing the chain and sprockets on the grom. Thanks alot bro!
Thanks man! Safe riding 🚀

What’s the best sprocket for back tire. I have a 15T front sprocket with stock back tire sprocket right now. I want to change the back sprocket chain adjusters and chain all in one shot soon. And what are you using to clean in this vid?
Stock is pretty good for. everyday riding. To learn wheelies, I changed to a 37T in the back. I was cleaning with water and washing up liquid like Fairy to get rid of the mud.
@@tapecknows with a 15 tooth up front does the 37T give more acceleration or top speed? I’m all about accelerating I’m in the city.
@@tapecknows I’m sorry I went down to a 14T front sprocket from the stock 15T. I have a 2018 Grom
Yeah the 37T would still increase acceleration
How did the 14 37 sprockets go. Wanting to get best top speed with still enough torque to get me there
It was great for trying wheelies but defo not for top speed
Great video, love the angles of the shots and the included cleaning shots!! One thing I noticed though is you may want to pop that chain retention clip off and flip it around so the open end is facing the rear of the bike. It makes it less likely to catch on something and pop off, as the rotation is counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise).
If you look again, it’s facing the correct way
@@tapecknows ha, I do mine from the top of the bike so it looked backwards to me. I see now from the bottom is goes on the other way and "flips" over when the chain rotates to the top relative side of the sprocket. My bad. Carry on bro, lol.
could you help me with finding the right rear sprocket? the link is not working for me
Did you mange to find it?
I’m sorry I forgot to ask also on the last comment did you have to cut any links off the new chain.
Nope, the chain remained 106 links since this change keeps the same length pretty much
I ride 14/37 bike so snappy 👌
Yeah but tops out at like 50 😂
@@WarningSign1000 nah 63 big dog. When I get this 212cc it won't even matter my top speed will be good for me.
🙌🏽
Looks like a really good set up. Does this set up help out with TopSpeed also?
Definitely not, my top speed is now 56mph hahaha
@@tapecknows yooo thats awesome. i’m glad you put this video up because I’ve been searching around for chain and sprocket set to use and now I got it thank you👍🏼😎
Should the front soracket have that much play?
Yeah it’s normal to allow the chain to move when riding
do i need to buy a new chain if i were to change to those sprockets on front and rear?
Depends how many miles you’ve done but it’s worth getting if you’re doing front and rear
Love the channel mate, how do you install the knobbly’s in the wet?
I had shop install them for me! I rarely ride the grom in the wet so I can’t really say
@@tapecknows sorry haha, I meant to say how did you find them in the wet! Cheers dude
Can i use a 428H? Is it any difference with just a 428?
Yeah you can use a 428H. It's just a heavy duty version of the 428, meaning it's got thicker side plates. But it should fit on a 428 sprocket
Good stuff, thanks for posting. I'm surprised you didnt use any threadlocker or anti-seize on the axle. Also, did you tourque the sprockets? I'm not sure what the manual calls for there.
Not necessary to use Loc-Tite on the axle. Never has been on motorcycles. And, don't overtighten it, or you will deform the swingarm.
@@HorsepowerHouse I misspoke. I meant locktite on the sprocket bolts. But anti seize for sure on the axle.
Glad you enjoyed it!
See your video now. 👍
What would you recommend to climb hilly rocky muddy at time dirt roads?
The 15T Front and 35T rear is quite sluggish for my environment.
I got about the same tires as you and just want to be able to climb my rocky dirt roads gently but firmly.
I'm not into crazy speed nor wheelies.
I bought a 14T front and 36T rear (not yet installed).
What would be the difference between what I bought and yours, 14T + 37T?
Did I bought the wrong rear sprocket size?
Questioning myself for a while now so your experience would be kindly appreciated. Thanks.
I don’t think there’s much difference between 14/36 and 14/37. Maybe a 2mph increase in top speed for 14/36.
But if you’re on rocky dirt, top speed probably not a priority.
@@tapecknows Many thanks. We also have superb wide tarmac hilly / mountain roads where we can ride fast so finally, what I chose seems good enough. I appreciated your input.
And one last thing: Will changing only the front, from 15T to 14T would be enough for what I need? Or changing also the rear sprocket makes a big difference when driving hilly rocky dirty tracks? Your experience as dirt road Grom driver is really appreciated.
@@sirishabadsingh I just bought 14/36.. how do you like it? Any input is appreciated
@@JM-rp9qf I bought it but never installed it. I'm quite happy with the original setting. I get used to it and climb whatever I need to. Keep me updated with your experience though!
왼쪽은 안쪼이는가요?
Google Translate:
무슨 말인지 잘 모르겠지만 사슬은 부드럽게 흐릅니다.
Chain master clip should be facing the other way mate. Should always be the opposite direction of travel to the bike so that they can’t get caught and come undone.
Oh thanks for that information! I’ll make sure to do that next time 🙌🏽
Actually haven’t I done it right? The rotation of the chain and wheels is anti-clockwise, so the open end of the clip is facing the opposite direction of travel?
No worries. Also another tip, when your doing your front sprocket bolts up put the bike in gear. It won’t keep spinning then👍🏼
Hahha yeah learned that literally 10 seconds after filming that part of the video
What cleaning product did you use?
That's how he removes the clip for the masterlink? Lord help us all.... 👎
I’ll pray for you!
@tapecknows no, we will not pray for You, because there is no hope for your beginner methods of working on a minibike.
damn I lived rent free in your head for an entire year huh?
@@tapecknows nope. Go back to MMI.
I guess this almost the same for the monkey, need to replace the stock chain, 4000 miles and adjusting every 100 and can pull it off the rear sprocket, it’s proper cheap crap
Yeah lucky it's easy enough to do
Oh, I don't know, how about not ride a minibike like it is a 450 motocross bike and you won't have that problem. Trips me out these guys expect these little bikes to be able to handle abuse like a full-on motocross bike.
You sound fun lol
@tapecknows Who removes a chain masterclip with a screwdriver? What in the world....
@@HorsepowerHousesomeone who adapts and overcomes. Worked didn’t it and since he wasn’t using it again ….is would of liked to see the angle grinder make an appearance but I’m not bitching about it 😂😊
@@BleachDemon99 Worst methods in history. Especially the screwdriver to remove masterclip method. HIdeous.
Really should used proper torque
Yeahh
