  • I bought a new used grom! Using my new grom as an example I go through five maintenance procedures you should do to your used grom right when you get it, or any grom for that matter in order to save money! Either way, they’re good skills to learn, and it’s my goal to demonstrate to you that they’re not that hard!
    1. Wash Bike 1:58 minutes in
    2. Clean Lube and Adjust Chain 2:41 minutes in
    3. Change Oil and Check Screen 5:00 minutes in
    4. Check and Adjust Valves 8:25 minutes in
    5. Check Tire Pressure 11:25 minutes in
    Tools/Parts Used:
    right engine cover gasket (clutch side), set of feeler gauges, a basic set of tools including sockets, used oil container, a quart of Rotella T6, torque wrench, kerosene, Motul waxed chain lube, plastic bristle brush, crush washer for oil drain plug is optional.
    Some Key Information:
    Intake Valve: 0.004 - 0.001 inches Exhaust Valve: 0.007 - 0.001
    Oil Capacity 0.9 liter (0.96 US Qt) at draining, 1.1 liters (1.16 US Qt) at disassembly
    Clutch Cover Gasket part # 11394-KYZ-900
    Oil Drain Bolt torque: 18 lb-ft (24Nm)

    I’ve been watching a lot of videos to figure out what to get as a first bike and I’m pretty sure I’ve decided on a Grom. I think it’ll be the perfect bike to learn on. I was planning on getting one new just because I’m not very mechanically inclined but with videos like this it has me thinking of checking the used market first. I’ll have to watch a lot more videos to see if I think I can do the work myself but I appreciate videos like these that give me a little confidence that I can do it myself. Even if I buy new these things will still need to be done at some point so I’ll need to learn at some point

    • @CTGromer
      @CTGromer  Před 3 lety +1

      I think you're right on the money with a grom being a great learner! Even if you don't buy used, maintenance will always need to be performed so familiarizing yourself with the bike is a good move, it will save you money too!

    I would add fork oil and brake fluid to that list as well. Axles, wheel bearings, brake pads, etc. A bit further into it but just as critical. If you’re going to enjoy a motorcycle, you should be able to fully maintain it to ensure your own safety. And the Grom is the ideal platform for that. One more comment on the valve lash, you’re given the target, along with an acceptable range. So for the intake valve, it’s 4 thousandths plus or minus one thousandth. So 0.003” to 0.005” is the specified range. Same for the exhaust 0.007” target, with 0.006” to 0.008”. Cheers

    Good vid. I got my Grom new and had to do most of the stuff you mentioned in the first 1-2k miles (break in period). Also, worth mentioning, is how bad stock tires are.Used stock tires are probably even worse. I junked the "Vee" rubber for the Michelin City Grip tires. A very noticeable difference in handling and wet riding performance. To save some money I took the wheels off the bike myself and brought them to an indie tire dealer to do the hard part (mounting and balancing).

      Its by far the best stock color scheme ever made (in my opinion) on the grom. You definitely scored! I'm big on the Zoom mufflers man, by far the best bang for your buck, and they're not too loud and give you good tone for the money. Good grab my friend!

Unclip the chain, bucket, chain looped like a snake three nuts under it to give you space from the botton and fill with kerosene... Live it 10 minutes soap water and she is ready to rock... Clip it up and lube

Besides where do you find used gloms, the cycle shops may have one with test mileage but no real price savings?

    If you are going so far to check the valves clearance, go ahead and adjust them to the center of the range. Put the .002 feeler gage in and adjust to that. It is only a minor bit of aditional work.

    That’s a great engine, I’ve heard tons of great stories about it and Honda has used the same basic design since the 60’s or 70’s. FYI a valve adjuster screwdriver costs nothing and can be a big help.

    • @CTGromer
      @CTGromer  Před 4 lety

      I'll look into one of those screw drivers you're talking about. And yes, Honda HAS been using this same engine since the late 60's! It's in all the trail 90s and 110s, bomb proof tried and true design.

    • @PMitchell106
      @PMitchell106 Před 4 lety

      Yep, Honda sold a basic horizontal pushrod OHV motor in 1958, then in 1965 they moved to a chain-driven overhead camshaft, since then, specifications, ignition, and induction have changed, but design has remained the same.

      Hey I appreciate the compliment, thanks for watching and commenting! I think it would be just fine-- You'd be able to get to 55mph no problem. a 14T front sprocket would help, and so would intake, exhaust and ECU re-flash.
