@@clarityvee I actually loved Enid, and I think the point of her "you can tell she's acting" was intentional given her outcast status and relationship with her family. Her bubbly nature was her form of rebellion in polar opposite to Wednesday's approach which is why they were such a good pairing, and therefore it was a persona she had to willfully and forcefully maintain. I think overall the cast did quite well with what they were given, but I agree 100% that a lot of the writing skirted too far into CW territory and the whole 'love triangle' trope needs to die by steam powered guillotine.

What I didn’t like about the 3D animated movies was how disapproving morticia was of her daughters girly interests. I feel like the whole point of the Addams family is that they’re weird, but unlike most sitcom family to come before them, they actually loved and supported each other
Morticia can be disinterested (and kind of disgusted) with pink outfits and pageants, but she would NEVER stop her daughter from experimenting with unconventional (to her) stuff

In the 1960s version of the Addams family there is an episode where Pugsly gets into normals things like a puppy, Boy Scouts, playing with other children, and Morticia and Gomez are not pleased. They think there is something wrong with Pugsley and they spend the episode trying to fix him by going to a psychiatrist. It feels like the pressure on their kids to be different was there from close to the start.

One of the major aspects of the Addams Family in my opinion is the judgment they face for being different and how healthy of a family they actually are. The humor plays on that perfectly. Christina is the gold standard Wednesday. It's predictable because it's true. Also, there are countless teenage characters whose plot-lines revolve around rebellion against their parents. It's rare to see a teenager who's fiercely loyal to and inspired by their family, while being anything but a goodie-two-shoes.

    • @DelilahDarling17
      @DelilahDarling17 Před rokem +19

That's what I've been trying to say! It would be so, so refreshing. Especially as someone who, as a teenager, was that way. I'm a young adult, so I still remember most of my teen years, and while I had a rebellious/emo phase; I luckily got out of it early. Still easily snapped and still do, but I was definitely what's considered a "goody two shoes." Still considered that too, I'm sure, haha.
It seriously needs to be represented more, and I feel as if Wednesday would've been perfect for that. The "rebellious/angsty teenager" is very, very overdone in my opinion. It really is like finding a rare gem to see the opposite.
I seriously would have liked the new show, as I don't personally like it (for *various* of reasons, mind you), if they based it around Wednesday standing out from the crowd due to her being so close and prideful of her family, while everyone else either takes theirs for granted or has some legitimate issues in their own.
What I always enjoyed, as well, was the core of the Addams Family is that they tend to think that their version of normal isn't bizarre or "stands out from the crowd" at all. Hopefully I'm not wrong on that, but that's what I remember.
If they wanted conflict in the new show, it could've been Wednesday discovering that most of the world is the complete opposite of her family, but that's okay. And for character development?
She could've helped others with their own family and other troubles, once she grew close to them. Would probably try to help in her own macabre ways, unless those she cared about requested her not to.
Another conflict, which would probably be the start, could've been she *tries* to make friends; but not everyone is like her brother Pugsley, where they'll carelessly laugh at a giant, poisonous spider under their pillow as a "simple, harmless prank."
Those are all just my thoughts, though. Let me know what you think! I wholeheartedly agree with your comment. Even though I think Christina's Wednesday was probably the opposite of a few of what I've described, as my memory is kinda blurry.

This is what I was trying to articulate on another video for the new Wednesday and got so much hate for it. I even clearly stated that I like the new Wednesday. She just wasn’t dark enough. For me, Wednesday’s darkness (not slightly emo, or a little bit angsty), but her psychopathic aura is a big part of what makes her Wednesday. If a version of Wednesday doesn’t scare you it’s not completely right. Yes, Wednesday can have friends and a boyfriend but if we’re not worried that she’ll kill them at any moment, is it even Wednesday. Christina Ricci’s performance is being slightly devalued by this younger generation, I think. They assume that we all think she’s iconic because she was the first (she wasn’t), but in fact, it’s because she was the best. Her version resonated because it was so well done. If it wasn’t as well done, it wouldn’t be so iconic. It would be yet another character in yet another movie that no one remembers. If we had the 90s version of Wednesday (heck the whole cast) debuting for the first time now, it would instantly be labelled iconic. It was a once in a lifetime performance where everything came together to produce magic. It’s up there with Heath Ledger’s Joker, American Psycho, Forrest Gump, Terminator, Ripley from Alien etc.

In my opinion Wednesday is never *actually* trying to kill Pugsley in the movies - they really are playing, and it's a macabre version of 'typical' sibling relationships. He knows it's a game, too. (Most of the time.)
One of my favourite moments from Fugère's Wednesday is when she says of a black cat that has been following her throughout the episode, "I'll take care of him! I mean...I'LL take care of HIM" - as if she let her mask of cold indifference slip for a second. (And Wednesday with a cat is just a really cute idea that should be done more, it's a shame the cat wasn't seen again after that episode. Wednesday is quite catlike herself in that she seems like a loner but actually just shows affection in an atypical way). It's also notable and quite funny that Fugère's Wednesday has a...for want of a better word, 'yandere' side that would later be seen to some extent in Melissa Hunter's interpretation.

I know some people will talk about how "Well Christina was a supporting role and Jenna was the main character", and "You only think that because the original movie is part of your childhood" but honestly, to a supporting character be so impactful and call so much attention as Christina there is clearly something there. Jenna did great, but I think what "flawed" her was the script.
I re-watched the Addams Family movies before watching the show and I think I know what it is. In the movies, Wednesday is nonchalant, calm, collected, and very polite. She had assertive energy without using anger and bad manners, and the jokes were dry, dark, and fitting. The one-liners fit the scene and didn't feel like the character was trying too hard to be menacing, and world building made sense.
This Jenna version wasn't as impactful because of the world-building and the demeanor. 1- It doesn't make any sense that Wednesday would be the only goth girl in the school, or would be seen as weird for it we're in 2022, the number of cringe people in schools is astronomical, especially of e-girls and goth girls. 2- The way they shunned her as an outcast in a school of outcasts. sirens can control people, the stoners can turn people into stone, and werewolves and vampires exist but all it took to make them scared was a girl in pigtails and a black uniform with an attitude?! In the 93 movie the world they put Wednesday around made sense, she was in a camp for white privileged children who shamed her, her brother, and her friend for being different. This leads me to problem number three. 3- How people react to Wednesday's attitude in the 22 version. Besides some of the adults, the teens were too nice and too helpful. How does someone treat you poorly the way Wednesday was treating them and yet they consistently help her? She consistently judges, shames, and insults people yet they go back to help her, or she goes ask them for help. Her character is insecure enough to take criticism as a personal offense, while the Christina version as ModernGurlz stated would be openly ridiculed bu her attitude yet remain confident and certain of herself. Honestly, none of that is Jenna's fault, she did great and without her performance, the show wouldn't work as well. It's just that this new character is edgy teen bait, which makes it seem like being rude = being impactful.

By that rationale the same goes for Roger Moore as James Bond or Adam West as Batman. Do I mean this in a sarcastic sense, a factual sense or (if this is possible for you to comprehend) *both* senses? Well, you see in real life you'd be amazed how nothing is really that black and white. You'd also be amazed how many times in history something truly bad led to something good. Thanks the to Black Death we saw the Renaissance. Uncle Joe (Stalin) won the war for the allies in WWII. You know, nuances.
Aside from the fact you can't even write two sentences without using punctuation (which means you're either lazy or uneducated... or both), your claim isn't even valid on its own.
The Addams Family were a cult phenomenon long before Christina Ricci's version of Wednesday. Had the films flopped (and as it were they never were blockbuster hits when they were new) that wouldn't have spelled the end of the Addams Family. Heck, had they never been made it still wouldn't have mattered. The bottom line is that they're charming and relatable and that's how they have managed to be around for 80+ years in different forms of media.
You're also under the absurd and ludicruous assumption that actors create a character when it's the script writers, directors and producers who create them. The characters of the Addams Family (and any other fictional character) always get updated for modern day audiences. It's fair and rather rational to assume that Wednesday Addams would have been modernized for 21st century norms and culture *whether or not there even had been a 1990's version of the Addams Family* .
"is the only answer." Many Muslims I've met say the same about the Quran. It's 100% the only answer. You sure you want to be placed in the fanatical bigot bracket?
      Scope

      Faith

Those are the traits (certainly not qualities) of bad and dangerous people.
Guess which one you are closer?
Btw, Eon Productions did intended to axe James Bond prior to Moore and DC Comics did intend to axe Batman prior to Adam West. There's a difference here, those were the main protagonists of their respective franchises. Wednesday Adams is but *one* member of the Addams Family. As for the storylines where wednesday's parents are at odds with her... they feel kinda weird, imo, because they give me the kind of vibe where they would be quite chill with their kid going through a rebellious phase as long as it's not illegal or deadly.
I'm looking forward to watching the series, tho, cuz the fact that an alt girl being friends with a prep in fiction is pretty dope (I know we have Caitlyn and Nikki Wong, but still). This is already one hell of an interesting trope subversion and reminds me of myself and my bestie who represent the same dynamic

Hot take but I did not enjoy the iteration of Wednesday in the 2022 show. It honestly just felt like she was trying to come off as edgy instead of being authentically misunderstood. I felt like she came off as more snobbish and her ENDLESS LIST of abilities (fencing, languages, playing cello, fighting, knowledge about plants, etc.) just made her feel unrealistic imo i thought Jenna did a good job at portraying her but i just didn’t like how the character was written 😊

When she mocked crocheting, I was honestly surprised because a) it’s something I could 100% see Wed doing especially with her distinct blend of macabre and femininity (imagine her crocheting a little nooses) and b) it felt sexist. Wednesday and Pugsley's relationship was similar to that of me and my other brother. We get into hijinks and would pick on each other, but we still loved each other. The 2nd movie definitely strike a chord with me as far as Wednesday portrayal there because I was a victim of bullying and found Ricci's performance there inspiring for me to start standing up for myself as I entered my teen years (and learning there were good people out there).
