It pisses me off that Asmon, while having only a very, very surface level knowledge of lore, can bust out a better story to Shadowlands on stream without thinking about it, THAN A TEAM OF WRITERS PAID TO DO THAT OVER 2 YEARS.
Like, fuck, they really need to fire the entire story department at Blizzard.

Not just Asmon sadly, Preach Nobbel Bellular Acco.. Pyro when he cared.. a lot of people are skilled at taking plot thread A and plot thread B and building good potential stories. Sometimes they reach a bit far and it would be hard to pivot in weeks to rewrite the story but the complaints of not understanding what the hell was the point of any of this have been around since BFA and instead of steering in a direction that was satisfying the writers mock everyone with "your mere mortal minds could not understand" tropes.
It's almost as if there was deliberateness to the choices the writers are making, it's that they are constantly trying to prove theory videos wrong. For example the concept art of the Jailer that got leaked: It looks honestly like a combination of the Jailer, the Arbiter, and the Primus and that at some point it got redone into new character designs. Now either that comparison is just by coincidence, or that's exactly what happened. And if it was on purpose the question is was that just early concept art and then they changed it naturally, or was the characters we received the consequence of the leak? The end results of a half baked uninteresting story and shallow dialogue does coincide with it being a snap reaction from the leak.

Also, Preach and Asmongold did not study narrative design. They are not paid a a five or six digit salary to produce a proper story for a video game, with years of experience in doing so. There are THOUSANDS of better story prompts on Reddit. They aren't finished, sure, but they are better than what we have.
What is so mindboggling is not that a kid in a garage didn't manage to fix his Ferrari. It's mindboggling that the Ferrari company, the actual mechanics who built the thing, can't manage to find the issue in the engine and fix it. They changed the tires for shitty tires, re-coloured the Ferrari, they banged their tools against it, in order to "buff out" damages that were not even there in the first place, but they didn't replace the engine, or even try to fix it.

Just let it die, maybe, maybe it can resurrect from its ashes just like the phoenix mount we all love. I left "hospital" couple of expansions ago but still kept watching from afar, from windows. And what they did to Arthas, finally did tear the connection with me and "hospital". Hospital and sick people in it no longer burden to me. I truly feel free now. "Thanks" Sylvanas.

WoW players have been doing this for years. WoW hasn't ever had a good story actually told in the game. The closest thing you ever got was Garrosh, but even that was mostly told in other places. The reality is that they've been vaguely gesturing at "big threats" and retconning shit since the very beginning, and the WoW players have done all the hard work trying to puzzle together theories in which things start making some sense. People were calling it out back in the day too. Kael'thas and Illidan randomly going insane without rhyme or reason, randomly changing their entire personalities and story arcs back in TBC comes to mind, especially since that got retconned more than once. For Illidan, they even retconned their first retcon. Meanwhile, channels like Nobbel, Pyro, Bellular used to keep it all alive by writing their own fanfic to get some coherency. Taliesin and Evitel are doing it instead now.

I thought the direction they were taking the lore of the dread lords was actually cool, and makes more sense narratively and to the average players than the jailer did it all, because the dread lords were there in wc3. They’re known for playing both sides and it fits their character to help the legion only as a means to further the goals of sire denathrius. If his plan was more fleshed out, it would be amazing to see, especially as dreadlords are just such a good villain because we actually want to go out and kill them like you were saying, the villain we need is one we hate.

    • @ziephel-6780
      @ziephel-6780 Před 2 lety

Exactly. Villains like Archimonde and Kil'Jaedon work because they were mostly in the background in Warcraft 3, the scourge of Lordaeron, the purge of Quel'Thalas. Neither were even in the world of Azeroth yet, and they still caused damage to the world through their minions. The main villain doesn't always have to be in our faces, hell the villain doesn't have to always be hidden, as long as the bad guy appears at the right time, like how Archimonde appears at the end of the undead campaign in Reign of Chaos and destroys the city of Dalaran. That is how a villain should be introduced. Blizzard's writings have aged like milk, their villains become less like villains and more like anti-heroes. And that is the issue, what motivation do we have to fight the bad guy if we either don't care or don't want to fight the bad guy if there is no personal investment to it? No satisfaction to see the villain defeated?

No Asmon, you are not the only person, I stopped playing because the story and narrative of the game burned me, I couldn't connect with the content because of how bad it was story.
You can have a game with no story and be successful, but you can't have a game with a bad story (especially on an IP as old and successful as Warcraft) and be successful because if it has a story inevitably people connect with it in some way. , the story and narrative of a game has to have a minimum of quality, something that WoW no longer has, mainly due to the inconsistencies and all the changes they have been making in the latest expansions.
What is happening with WoW is similar to what happened with Star Wars when it was acquired by Disney. The direction took a swerve and they began to change things that made everything that was already established be in doubt or change and that hit the fan base, the thing was so drastic and so poorly done that even those who were not very interested in the story began to notice the inconsistencies and/or feel that there were things that did not make sense, feeling confused, and rejecting the change.
It could be said that they were unable to develop the story as they wanted due to the problems caused by COVID and internal scandals, leading to an overall lack of content. However, that is not a true justification, ultimately the failure of the expansion continues to weigh on them and their failures, being a company with a poor or inflexible organization to deal with covid, and at the same time being rotten from within for years, causing scandals.
FFXIV had delays due to covid but they adapt well and despite everything they released one of the best expansions, if not the best, of all up to that moment (Shadowbringers). Blizzard is simply a company that is sick and broken from within.

I hope asmon is right, that the people who made shadowlands are no longer with the company, and the new crew is just trying to start fresh with the new expansion. I’ve been playing since I was a kid, since Wrath, and to see the game like this sucks. That being said, I won’t ever give up on WoW. I hope it arises to the former glory it once had. FOR THE ALLIANCE!!

The machine in ICC tells me that the jailer knows a much faster and efficient way to the soul of Azeroth, i think northrend in general is that point in the planet most closer to the Titan soul rather than silithus and the wound.

It says a lot about Wrath's design that over a decade after the content has been relevant and few have seen it recently (the ICC 5 mans generally don't pop in leveling queues, or they didn't use to) outside of maybe farming the battered hilt, that it is recognizable in less than five seconds on screen.

    This Denathrius-cut is completely understandable.
Because we learned at the end of the Revendreth-questline that Denathrius betrayed everyone. That he told Zovaal the things he said it's completely understandable because he had to play a role for the other Eternal Ones. Just Lying for the bigger purpose and to keep the others unsuspicious.
Thats what I would've done too in Denathrius' position

At this point, with all the time travel, dimension hopping, memory altering, and death defying the story progression has to lead to the players being the bad guys. Logically if the players always beat the baddies and the bigger baddies, then with the biggest baddies saying there is another big baddie that is coming it has to be the players. The thing that beats the baddie and threatens their plan for reality always ends up being the players. The perpetually penultimate baddie always sees the players in some weird time travel shenanigans beating the ultimate baddie and goes "oh shit gotta stop those dudes". How can there ever be a true ultimate unbeatable baddie if the players ALWAYS end up beating whatever?

I can fix the entire shadowlands storyline with one sentence:
Create a reacurring almost forgettable character that you encounter in each of the main zones that is close with the inner council of each faction that is quietly influencing the decisions of the leaders to ultimately bring upon the same end goal of the ending cinematic.
    Boom
Infiltration, hiding in plane sight, you can do quests for the main bad guy without even knowing it.
Plus, why not create dungeons or scenarios of going back to original ICC to activate the forges as "an attempt to stop the jailor" but the quest giver was secretly the jailor the whole time and you activated the final raid on accident.
    Boom.
Better yet, you could've explored the consequences of no lich king, the intro questline should've been quelling the raging undead forces, then being forced to send heros into the shadowlands to find the forgemaster to craft a new helm or tool to control the undead, THEN dealing with the end big bad guy.
    OR EVEN
IDK, CREATING A LEGENDARY WEAPON SPECIFICALLY FOR NIGHT ELVES THAT HAVE A LONG RARE QUESTLINE EXPLORING THE ELUNE STORY
    AAAAA
OR FUCKIN, IDK, PLAY AROUND WITH CLASS-SPECIFIC TRAININGS IN EACH ZONE, DRUIDS HAVE COOL CLASS GLYPHS AND QUESTS IN FAIRY LAND, PALADINS GET COOL NEW MOUNTS IN BASTION, WARLOCKS AND DK'S GET COOL NEW WEAPONS OR GLYPHS IN THE DEAD PLACE, ROUGES GET A COOL NEW SOMETHING IN THE RED PLACE
    BLLLAAAHHH
WHAT ABOUT ADDING QUESTS THAT CAN ONLY BE DONE WHEN YOUR CHARACTER IS ACTUALLY DEAD AND YOU CAN TALK TO SPIRIT HEALERS IN THE AFTERLIFE AND MORE NPC'S POP UP WHEN YOU'RE DEAD, YOU COULD MAKE A DEAD-ONLY QUEST TO FIND ARTHAS OR VARIAN OR SARFANG OR ANYONE, THERE COULDV'E BEEN SO MANY COOL IDEAS WITH THE DEATH EXPANSION BUT NO
IT WAS JUST A DISNEY RIDE WITH A TUMBLR PROJECT MANAGER GOING THROUGH AN EMO PHASE BACKED BY CORPO GIANTS
WHY AND WHEN THE FUCK DID SPACE PIRATES BECOME A PLOT POINT, IN THE REALM OF THE DEAD... D E A D
    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

To somewhat even the playing field for the fight between Sylvanas and Bolvar, I think it could've been interesting to have a plot line of Sylvanas acquiring a new mourneblade that was made for her, which would also foreshadow the existence of the Jailer, because we wouldn't know who had it made yet.
