Although I love his way of seeing things, but I’ve tried it at my current job that I dread. You can’t help it when you work with assholes who favour other workers. As much as you’re trying to stay positive and learn, there’s always something wrong you did and your supervisor and his other team members drains you because they want you to work as the way they work. I just hate being controlled by someone rude. I don’t mind working in a team and under someone who is fair, I love the job. But it’s the people that makes my daily work difficult, when you stand up to a mean supervisor, he would do everything he can to make your day a little harder just because you hurt his lil ego. So, if the work drains you no matter what you’re trying to do to be successful without being affected in your environment, leave. Some things are just not worth it. I am resigning today and giving in my 2weeks notice, and I’m prepared for what ever comes. My sanity and my happiness is much more important right now. I’ll find another job.
I totally, totally agree with you. I'm about to quit, and I'm just planning my next move. My work in IT is stressful and not satisfying anymore that the things around me seem meaningless because of my job. I just need to give me 7-week notice and take a break. The mental stress of working in IT drains me. I'm not happy, I'm getting depressed each week.
Great advice on essentially being the person you want to be at your job, yet doesn't really tell you *how* to *quit* your job and live your truth if your work doesn't suit you. If you know your passion (as I do), you have to find a way to live it, and that may not be possible right away. Meanwhile, you still have bills to pay, etc. Personally, I'm an artist and musician soul at a corporate job that does *nothing* for me.. but I need the money so I can move and hopefully finally start to live my truth. There's absolutely nothing about what I currently do at my job that can satisfy my passion, so I must accept and tolerate my circumstances until I can change them. The way I see it, my boss uses me and I'm using my boss so that I can eventually break free from his "shackles" and do what I really want to do. I think this is the reality for most of us: aware that we're "sheep" caught up in a system, and doing what we can to survive until we can break out of "jail".

He does not tell us you quit our jobs literally. This is only a catchy tittle. He tells us to change our attitude, to be 'you' at what you do. This may lead to change the job, but does not have to.

Chip Conley, founder of the Joie de Vivre hotel group in the SF Bay Area talked about jobs. He equates a job with people who bring their body to the place of work. A bus driver is doing a job: he brings his body to the bus depot, gets on a bus and just drives his/her route. Next up is a career. That's when you bring your body and your mind to the place of work. A lawyer, a doctor, an accountant. You can't just bring your body and slum it. But, there's a higher level. That is a calling. A calling is where you bring your body, your mind, and your soul. Michelangelo is willing to lie on a scaffolding to paint the Sistine Chapel because he can't conceive of doing anything else. Madison Bumgarner's role as a pitcher is his career. Buster Posey's role as a catcher is a calling. The first violinist of an orchestra has a career. The soloist playing a violin concerto has a calling. Find your calling.

Ah, this is great, Vítám***. This is kind a high, I think trim the master volume down. Good. This has been a great experience for me living in Poland for the last three years, I have lived in Krakow I love your city, I love the people, I love Poland, thank you it’s a great place. I go back to Seatle where I have my office and Seatle people say “John what do you do in Poland?” and I say “you’ve never been there have you?”. Now the certain things that are different about Poland and then in America as you might go. We were at end of one of our three and half day leadership development seminars, and a participant came up at the end, and I said how was this for you? He said [nížly]. And I turned to my colleague,it was my first week in Poland, and I turned to my colleague and said dear what is that mean? He said not bad. And I said not bad?? Jeasus three and a half days and he says no.. Then he said the guy just told you that you changed his life! And I said ha ha, and I said why didn’t he tell me? He said he did, he told you it was not bad, he said John this is Poland, this is Poland. So anyway it’s been a wonderful, wonderful time here. I wanna talk with you about something dear to my heart, and it goes like this. How to turn your workplace your job into experience personal development. You know what the midlife crisis is, right? A midlife crisis is when you get to the top rung on your ladder and you realize that you leaned it against the wrong wall.
So I am gonna take I am gonna ** everything in next eighteen, now sixteen minutes, to help to lean your ledder against the right wall. Dobže? Okay. Now, nýžly. Now some of you that already passed your midlife crisis I have antoher saying for you and this it’s never too late to become what you might have been. Ok? So, here we go. Gonna go fast. Where do you spend your most awake time? What’s the answer? Work. So maybe, some of your students, but when I asked the question, how many of you spend eight hours a day at work? Let’s say you work, raise your hand eight hours a day, ok, nine hours a day, ten hours a day, come on eleven, come on twelve, see ok, I r** my case. You work more than you sleep. You spend more time at work awake than anywhere else in your life. So the workplace is an extremely important part in your life. Now I ask people, now I am gonna ask you. As a human being are you a finished product or are you work in progress? What would your answer be? Work in progress. Everybody says that. Ok, where do you do your progressing, where do you do your developing? And people talk about seminars, and they talk about their religious institution, reading books and so for, and I ask what about a workplace? And they go workplace? What has that got to do with, you know, progressing. So this is my mission in life really, is to help people to turn workplace into a place where they can grow up and develop. In America this is kind of the way by seeing many people, its like I have a life and I have work, how to these two relates each other? Some people have it, oh lets see this is a laser here? Yeah, cool. So some people have a life and the work and they are trying put them together in some equal fashion. Other people say you know what my life, I don’t think so *** performing, this way, I’ve got lot of life and my work is a part of my life, but it’s not my whole life. This is what I experience in Poland. I experience that yeah? I was given up a talk recently in Wroclaw and I young man came up to me and he said you know my mother, he is a photographer, and he said my mother said why are you wasting the education we gave you, why don’t you get a real job? And because, he said my mother is from the old generation in Poland where the important thing is have a job, it doesn’t matter what the job is, doesn’t matter if the job fits you or not, doesn’t matter if it has anything to do with what you really wanna do. You have got a job, keep the job, for Pete sake why don’t you go to get a job, so you’ll have a job. I’ll tell you a minute, I am gonna educate you, how many of you have a job? Ok, in a minute I am gonna educate you to quit your job so stand by. Now, don’t get nervous its ok. This is what I notice a lot in Poland. People actually draw, build a wall between their life and their workplace. My friend’s told me that in the old days, your family system, your social, your friends were completely separate from work. They said you can work beside someone for years and not know really the name of their sp***, or they have children, any problems going on in their life. This is completely separate. So what I am saying you can’t separate, how can you separate your life from your work? You are a human being in both of those places. So I have a suggestion for you here. Oh, you can’t see that. It’s a really cool picture but you can’t see it. Its not what you made today when you go to work, its not just what you made, but what do you’ve been made into. Its not just what you produced for the company, but what in beeng produced in you while you producing that for the company. Or like this. Its not just what happened today at work but what is happening inside you while all that stuff is happening at work. Two people go to work side by side, one person goes home at the end of the day and says oh my God what a disaster what a I. nnn… The other person working right beside him goes home and says Man, I really learned a lot, this is incredible.
So everyone gets the experience, some get the lesson, my favorite quote from T. S. Eliot I am gonna rip through some of this. I think we show up with assignment with three parts. Discover who we are, express it into the world in such a way that makes create a difference. Now, I am gonna suggest you turn your job, your workplace into a classroom or a Dojo, I do little Aikido, its like place where you can practice being who you are, why not. Your faculty is waiting for you every day, the faculty are those idiots you have to work with. You know in fact the worse person there is your most important teacher, but that’s the advanced class, ok? The curriculum is all th** that happens to you all day long, I know the word in Polish but I am not supposed they told me not to say it. But its all the stuff that happens to you during the day, that’t your curriculum. And you know what the grades accept what happens inside your body when you go home at the and of the day, that’s how you measure what happenes in work, and there is a final exam butthen its too late. A job, by the way the word job comes from the old English word gobbe. Which means a loop of something. So in the old days you took stuff from here and you moved it over here. How many loop you got payed, but how many loops or gobbes you move from here to here, so in, out, in out, today in basket, out basket, in basket, out basket, all day every day, no matter where you are whatever matter level you take stuff in you move it over here. That’s a job. Personally I don’t want to have a job. If that’s a job I don’t want one, ok? I recommend that you ** have a job, but you look for a work. What is your work? What is the work that you are here for? Work comes from the Greek word for erg which I think, I am looking at my physics man here, I think is how many calories is to take to move one gram one centimeter, if I memor* my physics right. One o one. Is that close enough? Yeah, nýžly. So work switch from erg to work in the old german which that become the word work. So work is energy with a direction. Its purpose for energy. So personally I think you should quit your job and find your work. Ok? Its very important seriously. Very important thing to do.
Now, I wanna tell a story about this really quickly. I was doing an ex** seminar for a woman who ** big corporation in Seattle and her team of vice presidents. Her name was Sherley, behind your back they called her Dragon Lady. Ok? And so I dispoint a seminar she says John this is all sweet and wonderful but what has this got to do with leadership and running this organization. I said well, ok, what would you do with your life if you didn’t have to come to work every day? She said I’d go home and play with my grandchildren. I said ok. Let’s go with that. And I said one of the vice president there, would you come up with the easle* and take some notes? And I said tell us what is this about your grandchildren? She said well first of all I have to get the house ready. What is that mean? Well I wanna make sure it is safe, I wanna make sure that there is some interesting things there for them to do, wanna make sure to have enough food and things to do and then I have to get myself ready, I gotta have a right attitude, what is that, well I got be ready I gotta show them how much I care about them and so for it. And all this is get written down. Ok, the kids are coming what do you do? Well I get down on my knees great them at the front door, on your knees? Why? Well, I want them to know I wanna meet them at their own level and so forth. What do you do during the day? Well I just follow them around and hope they are okey and if I get I get a chance to teach them something, you know, I’ll do it. And all this is get written down. Then she says good bye to them at the door. Now at the end of the story she is kind a quiet, little bit emotional, and I said what’s going on? She said well this is very sweet, she said, but I don’t see what it has to do with leadership.
So I got my course, I’m consultor, right? So I am scared after death if there is not gonna be any connection between*** she’s not gonna find it, but I looked at the flipchart , and I said well just look at this, and look at that and tell me what you see and she read it, and I said maybe this is another description of you as a leader of this organization. And she said Moj bože, no she said oh my God she said. She said my God, she said do you mean that I can bring the grandmother to work? And all of the vice presidents were going, oh God yes, oh please, oh please!!! You know and so, it was really interesting. I came back three months later to do some follow up and the receptionist at the front desk **levels** she said John come here, she said grandma is in the building. So it was great. So the question I have for you is who is that who lives in you that you need to bring to work?

Now we gonna go, do some more. This is what I called the diferred life plan. This is the default plan that we were all taught in America I am convinced you were taught this here. You work really hard now, you do whatever you have to do in order to have what you need to have, then as soon as you have enough of that whatever it is money or st*** or the trophy, you know all the toys, whatever you need, as soon as you have enough of that, then and only then you get to be happy, be peace, be, you know, relaxed, whatever it is. Now there is one very small problem with this formula. It doesn’t work. Why? Because you never have enough. If I ask you how much money do you need what’s the answer gonna be? A little more than I have now. I mean, everybody says that. So you can never have enough, if you make your being happy relaxed or peace cont* of anything you’ll never get there. Sales people understand this. Sales people understand this. They make the sale how do they feel? Nýžly, right? No, dobže, bardzodobže, fantastičně, zaje fajně. Now, I’ve just used all my polish vocabulary I have now, and how long does that feeling last? Till the next phone call hm? And then its going again. I am proposing something extremely radical which is to turn the whole thing around and let what you do be an expression of who you are and then you get feedback from the world in form of money and, but who cares? Because you are starting from a place, that what you are doing is an expression of who you are. Dobže? Ok? Rozumieš? Ok, cool. Now I wanna talk about this word right here, TOV.
I am gonna go back to my roots in the Creation story in the book of Genesis, ok? Now the native amrican story tell us in America, we are always saying that. I don’t know is the story happened exactly the same this way, but the story is true. So I am almost positive that didn’t exactly happened this way but the story is true. At one point it says the Lord created the oceans and then looked and saw that it was good. Must be some Lutherans in the room here, so anyway. So that’s a terrible translation for that word, the word is tov in Hebrew, Mazltov, lots of tov, a better translation is that the Lord created the oceans and looked and said yee, yes, that’s what I’m talking about, that’s what I’m talking about, yeah, yeah. That’s a piece of me out there in the world, where you can see it. You wanna learn something about me? Look at my ocean. That’s tov.
My daughter,** this way, oh you can’t see my daughter Ema, oh that’s so sad. My daughter Ema is twenty-five ye.. twenty-three, she’s going to school in Paris, France, studying theatre dance and a voice, and ah, she started dancing, when she was, you know, could walk, and if Ema would dancing here, she would not be dancing to impress you, she would not be dancing to get feedback, she’d be dancing because she is Ema. And Ema dances. You get Ema, you get a dancer. That’s it. The other day on Skype, she said dad if I break a legend can’t dance, she said I don’t know what I am gonna do, she said this is who I am. You get Ema, you get a dancer.
My son Eica, wanna get a picture of Eica, no? No, too bad. Oh, there he is. My son Eica is now twenty five, plays piano and trombone classical jazz and so forth. And I came in this little house that we had, little tiny house, big grand piano fill the whole living room and Eica was playing the rock man enough piece ok, the whole house was shaking, you know little tiny house, big grand piano, and I stood at the back door, and I just let the music just wash over me. And I stood there and I had this insight, I could picture Eica at the piano and then I realized that the house was not shaking with the piano, the house was not shaking with the rock man enough, the house was shaking with Eica. Eica was filling the house, the grand piano just sits there until Eica puts his fingers on the keyboard, the rock man enough its dots on a piece of paper until he reads it and interprets it through who he is and puts his hands on keybord and then the music happens. You are in job somewhere, workplace somewhere, your name is in box of on an organization chart, that’s just your piano, and your job assignment is just a dots, its rock mana enough, its just dots on piece of paper until you put your hands on the keyboard and then you start to play. If you leave another name goes into that box, the music will be different. The music is your music. Has nothing to do with the job, its you interpreting that music into the world.
So my suggestion is, when you don’t know what to do go for tov, go for tov, tov is what you, is when what you’re doing is an full expression of who you are at the core of your being in such a way that contributes to other people around you and it is alignment with what life, what creation needs from you. So every day that you go to work, just ask yourself what is the lesson here? What is this for me? Instead of saying what a wonder if its happened to me, just turn it slightly, and say I wonder if its happening for me, I wonder its might be happening for me. So, thank you so much for the chance to be with you I highly recommend going for tov, its an extraordinary way to live, you get Ema, you get a dancer, you get me , you get this, ok? Thank you very much.

When you work at a place that is run by selfish bosses you learn quickly what not to do. Learning goes both way, you can learn what to do, and also learn what not to do, at the end of the day they both attribute to your personal growth. When a boss/company lies to people that's when you bail. Stop bending over for a paycheck, if they don't do you any favors why do them favors?
I agree. In fact, I agree so much, that I see through the BS way too quickly at every job. This is why its hard for me to keep one. I get good jobs, all kinds of different things..
But after that 90 days companies behave toward you like they own you. Like you must walk and talk like them otherwise you'll be pariah. Either you quit because they're all the same or youre totally different.... Either way, my experience with jobs is that its all about control. If they cant completely control you, youll never get promoted.
Anyway, my small 2 cents. Total and complete control seems to be the norm. Micromanging at its max. No one is trusted to have their own brains a skill to accomplish anything. Even when you have experience they say youre not worth what you ask because it wasnt experience within their company.
Work feels more and more like slavery no matter where I go.

I know that on some job environments the elementary ABCs of a job are very important but as you said about control they focus on whether or not you crossed every tee and dotted every eye and cute and if you haven't that's an issue never mind that ABC is the most important thing to take care of they want like you said total control for mindless meaningless reasons to their own detriment you just have to shake your head and laugh to keep from crying. Keep up your good analyzation skills
I first found this talk a couple years ago. I agree with it even more now. I quit my Day Job (for which I lost my "passion") and started travelling full time. Flying to every country, recording my journey. So I can identify with John Scherer's message.
10 Million Miles Journey i wish i can quit my job to0.... do the things i want,, things that i really really really want to do... i'm a chef and ive lost my passion in cooking because i just let my self before that this will set me free (financially) but then im working on for my savings.that someday i can quit this. im just like dying everyday... going to work...im just like a robot doing things they want me to do... i wake up every morning that nothing excites me at all... i want to do my t0v but u just cant....
somehow this helps decrease my depression... thanks sir john....

Love this! You are the important piece of whatever it is that you do. It's all about your perspective and how you see and feel about yourself. You bring something different to the work place. Have you ever met someone who you will never forget, a long time friend, a co worker, someone you talked to in the store? They were just being them, but they were exactly who you needed in your life at that time? How do you know that's not you to someone else? You've made an impact on people in your lifetime that you may never have realized. I want to make sure I'm the best me where ever I go or whatever I do because I'm bringing my tov into it.
How do I apply this in my life? I am a nurse and everyday of my life I try to be the best that I can be but everyday my job is pushing me to the brink of depression because of the too much pressure being put on our shoulders. We nurses get all the shit whenever some asshole want to change something how they operate their business. Health Care is now managed by businessmen.
Myra San Jose Are there any opportunities to work in non-profit nursing? Typically the people have hearts in the non-profit sector. Good luck, and make that change because depression sucks!

What about starting your own clinic with some doctors? People who give a shit about helping sick people not business or money or whatever your bosses care about?
What about having this chat with the other nurses and doctors and other colleagues and together you work something out..? E.g. you go to your boss or CEO or change something at work to make it more manageable.. Is work going to continue the way it is indefinitely if you don't change something about it??

Here's the lesson:
"If you don't like your job, learn how to love it instead! Make your work an extension of yourself!"
His examples of his kids being a dancer and a pianist and that's who they are, that's just wonderful. Tell me, how does that translate to their occupation? Does she dance around deadlines at work? Does he type 300 words per minute? Do they have careers? If they do, do they even like them?
I'll give him credit for saying success does not equal happiness. At some point, the money just doesn't matter if you're miserable. There is a level of income where you need to survive, then there is a level where you are comfortable and can pay the bills with extra money in your pocket, and after that it's really irrelevant other than you can have more expensive hobbies and "nicer" things. I think most people will figure this out early in their careers.
I also enjoyed the analogy of a midlife crisis. It really is like climbing to the top of a ladder against the wrong building.
Regardless, it's not really good advice yet so many people gobble this stuff up and pretend that they got something out of it. Listen, if you have a shitty job then you have to put yourself out there and try to get a job somewhere else. If you have a great job and you're still not happy, maybe you need to try a different career path. Maybe you need to be in business with yourself and be your own boss. The one thing these people don't tell you is that most people have no clue what they want to do and no magic seminar is going to put it in perspective, you have to be willing to take a chance to make it happen. You may have to work in many different roles at many different companies until you find something that you really enjoy, or maybe you won't ever enjoy working for someone else. Is it easy to do these things? No. Is it practical? Financially, probably not. Is there risk involved? Absolutely, but there really are no alternatives. You either go for it and succeed (or fail and try again), or you never go for it and stay miserable.

John Scherer has a lovely manner. Really enjoyed his relaxed style. There's nothing all that new in what he says, but he says it beautifully and with heart.
Also, even if this is common knowledge, there are still a great many people out there who don't enjoy their working lives - they prob need all the inspiration they can get.
It'd be nice to hear comments from people who have either improved their existing jobs (like the Dragon Lady) or made a total change.

Take two things from this: 1) If you are unsure about what to do, go for tov (hebrew word for happiness + or exhilaration)-- tov is an expression of who you are at your core, contributes to people around you and aligns with what creation needs from you; 2) instead of asking why is this happening to me, ask why is this happening for me.
i believe he delived a classical "do what u r passionate about" thing which was O.K., BUT he is proposing in a way that all people know their passsion !
so for people who r still in search for their passion they just received an incomplete advice that didn't show them how to find their passion and didn't encourge them to hang on their imperfect jobs until things click !
he just told them you r not doing well in life unlike my daughter the dancer or son the pianist.
P.s. many people excelled in more than one field in life which proves the multi-interests quality of majority of people.
I love this. I so want to quite my job as an attorney, but problem is I don’t know what my work is (I do love helping people and to be of service, but not sure where that would lead).

The work place is where I go to die each day. My job is to break big rocks in to smaller blocks, metaphorically. Still, my dreams and ambitions become further away because I must make an income.

I am astounded at the number of people in this comments section who think that this speaker was actually advocating that we LITERALLY quit our jobs. He was just saying to turn your current job into a vehicle for your personal expression through your work.

TEDx Poland is great. Whatever is the meaning of this talk? When I go to work, I set in front of a computer and type 8 hours, in a cubical. By the nature of the job, no one is allowed to waste time doing anything but workload. On Friday I receive a paycheck (there are no other people around me). I never got the meaning of the talk.

I know exactly what you mean John. I am working as a carer in a care home for old people with dementia and this job is very demanding and challenging, but also often very rewarding. And I learn every day something not only about these people but about myself.

Listening to this as a programmer is pretty weird. Where do you develop? New libraries, new frameworks, new API's, new design patterns + mastering the ones that I already know. There's so much of that I could work 40 hours per day and it still would not be enough.
I can tell you my perspective also as a programmer. I heard this talk I think around 2011 and it got to me that being myself at work is equally important as doing the work itself. I mean by that I can bring more from be than just coding. To give you a little example I started to make the workplace more fun. It might sound silly or cliche but for instance bringing more genuine humor (not a corporate smalltalk BS) to technical calls with clients or on meetings helped us to relax atmosphere, build more trust and understanding. This is of course an example that could be difficult to understand without a broader context but the underline is that when you put emotional intelligence on top of technical skills everyone around you will benefit from it.
So, don't try to improve your situation, just learn to enjoy it. Or Don't worry, be happy. Thanks. That makes it all better.

For all of you talking about "cleaning the toiliets, working in shops, in the fast food joints and other jobs that could not be fulfilling for anyone but they are jobs that need to be done." Most of these jobs can be eliminated tomorrow by implementing existing solutions through good design, automation and decentralising production. And you know what? When your consciousness shifts from it's narrow view of the current system, and know how to live in line with nature and people, you will clean the toilet yourself :) So, do you still wanna follow your (original) dream ..?

It seems that what we have been doing is increasing productivity through science and technology, but instead of using their benefits to work less and enjoy life more, we continue to shift these benefits to, and concentrate them in the hands of fewer and fewer individuals. There was a documentary on BBC some time ago about how most jobs will be automated away, and sooner than most people expect. I think a system where the benefits of automation are distributed among people that don't want to (or can't) work in the form of a "salary". Sort of like dividing up the value produced by robots, machines and software. The rest, who likes to work, also get a salary--higher than the ones that don't work to include their labour remuneration. Something similar to this will be required once machines and software do majority of work.

Another word I've heard from rabbis who know much more than I do, is the fact that in Hebrew the word work and your words worship are indistinguishable from one another. To work is to worship God. To serve one another is to worship God. Once we see things in this matter, it changes the way we work and operate in the world
Too much fluff. The message of being true to who you are is good, but could have been conveyed in less than 5 minutes. The talk is sorely lacking in substantive recommendations for how to actually achieve this goal, in spite of the natural law that most jobs are created by people with particular needs. Your aspirations for fulfillment are not part of the job requirements. Most fulfilling jobs are those which you create yourself... consulting is a great gig, if you can get someone to pay you for it.
