AvalonKing Armor Shield IX DIY Ceramic Coating Review & Testing

  • I was given the opportunity to test out the Armor Shield IX DIY Ceramic Coating from AvalonKing. In this review, we will be evaluating the product's gloss, slickness, UVA blocking capabilities, and durability. Additionally, we will be discussing its visual appeal and how easy it is to apply. Despite not having prior experience with this brand or doing much research on it, I was eager to give it a try due to its popularity on social media.
    AvalonKing Armor Shield IX - bit.ly/akingshieldix
    Comparison of my past wax tests: dmitrysgarage.com/wax
    The testing started off really well. AvalonKing Armor Shield IX was very easy to apply, it's a true DIY solution. I also found that it looked great, not the most amazing product in that regard, but a very solid showing beating many competitors. The slickness was about middle of the road, not bad, but not much to write home about. UVA protection was also undetectable using my transmission meter.
    Where things really fell apart was the durability testing. It is possible that this was a bad batch, but in my testing I barely squeezed out three washes. This is very disappointing for a ceramic coating product, especially if a customer spent a significant amount of time, potentially days, on prep work. I generally try to avoid researching products I'm unfamiliar with prior to testing to avoid bias. After the testing I did some research and saw that many reviews were very positive. However, there were a number of people claiming similar disappointing results, including only surviving a handful of washes or weeks of use.
    After a bit more research on ImportYeti, I saw that AvalonKing was importing this product from Lixin Industrial Shenzhen. Looks like they're basically white labeling the product, Lixin seems to sell their products at around $8/pop. It's possible their quality control is just not great coming out of China. If it were me and I wanted to try it out I'd probably just order some products/samples from the manufacturer directly on Alibaba.

    Damn I applied this product over a year ago on my truck and to say the least it’s still going strong! I’m satisfied with the product and plan on using it on my other vehicles! With proper maintenance wash the coating will maintain its shine, but since my truck is used as a work truck I wasn’t looking for a show room shine just something that will make my truck easier to clean and still look good when I’m done!

    I've applied AvalonKing IX on my Subaru and my results seem to be quite different to yours - particularly with the beading. It also seems to be holding up very well after 3 months and multiple washes. I do agree that it wasn't as slick as I expected though, vs. my other vehicle which was coated by CeramicPro, and even some off-the-shelf ceramic spray bottles. I did FULLY decontaminate, polish and prep my vehicle before its application (which took me like 2 days), and I allowed Armor Shield to cure for well over 3 days before taking it out of the garage (and a week before it got wet) which could explain why the longevity and hydrophobic performance on my application seems to be vastly better than in your test.

    That UVA testing is really interesting but I am getting confused... Paint without protection oxidize a lot quicker vs with protection and oxidation comes from UV and how come that ceramic coated car does not fade unlike bare clearcoat. What's your opinion on this. btw love your videos thanks for doing this tests for us!

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching and this is a great question. I think we are seeing a variety of factors when we see our nicely cared for cars vs. paint on clunkers. One aspect to consider is that the chemical reactions responsible for oxidation are not entirely caused by UV light. Oxidation can be seen on boat hulls, rust, and many other objects that aren’t being worn down by UV but are exposed to oxygen, water, etc... People even wax their boat hulls to avoid oxidation and some well known car wax companies make boat products. Waxes and coatings provide a barrier, albeit a thin one, to the environment. This reduces overall oxidation. Secondly well cared for cars are frequently garaged, washed, decontaminated, and generally loved. They arent left to rot in the sun or ran through a whirling automatic car wash three times a year after driving through salt and snow. Speaking of salt and snow, look how nice southern cars look! We’ve got so much UV here but our cars look great.

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  Před rokem

      Oh and I forgot to mention abrasion protection for your UV protective clear coat. The slick hydrophobic surface protects the clear coat physically when washing and drying.

    I applied this coating just over a year ago. Spent about 3 days on wash, decon, polish and coating. Initially all seemed great and it was so easy to apply. I was so disappointed though to find it had degraded to basically nothing after a few washes. I used a pH neutral snow foam and Avalon's own shampoo recommended with this coating. Really frustrating after spending so long on prep. Anyway, this year I'm going to repeat the process but apply Gyeon Mose or Syncro. Definitely wouldn't waste my time woth this stuff again

      I had the same experience, it is annoying given all the prep you go through to get to the application stage. The claying process alone takes hours, let alone the compounding, polishing, wipe down etc. I tend to stick with the ceramic sprays now, they are much easier to apply and you can re-detail when required and just re-coat (just not in full sun of course).

    I get a bit OCD with my detailing and I fully prepped my car in a garage, from snow foam, wash, decontamination, second wash, full clay, light wet sand, compound and a 3 stage polish, finishing with an iso prop wipe down to remove any residue. I applied this in the garage (2 coats) and then left to cure for 3 weeks. A bit like some of the other comments, it seemed to drop off very quickly (under 2 months) and was almost unnoticeable. To cap it off, a seagull then dropped its breakfast on the rear panel, which seemed to react with the coating and then the clearcoat (it was only on the surface for a matter of hours, which is when I noticed it). This resulted in the need for a light wet sand and polish to remove the crazing and the whole coating process was required again.
    I was not impressed in the slightest by this product and have had better success with the semi permanent ceramic sprays (I quite like Mothers CMX). At least with these you can re-detail and re coat regularly as required and the application is much much easier.

Also, not only is beading weak, but the tree stuff and general stuff that falls on truck while outside seems hard to get off, like there is no coating on the paint at all, like bare paint. Seriously disappointed, a good wax is cheaper and works 100 times better. Possibly Trying Adam’s Graphene next….

    There seens to be some other variables at play, since so many people see success with the coating. There are a lot of variables not really discussed when it comes to proper coating application/curing/bonding. Humidity, temperature, and certain variables with the actual chemistry. Could be the QC tolerance range is larger for some aspect of the coating chemistry, that then combines with an installation/curing variable that leads to improper coating cure/bond, and eventual early coating failure. Kinda what happened with Cerakote recently...

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  Před 4 měsíci

      Keep in mind I'm applying the coatings in a climate controlled space so humidity and temperature are as optimal as you can get. It's ~72F and ~45% relative humidity in there. I think the inconsistency is due to poor qc overall.
      As others have pointed out (and Ive researched it as well) this is a couple of dollar ceramic coating from china with a custom label. On the other hand look at companies like Adams that do their own r&d (through B&B Blending), their stuff is consistently good in my testing. AutoGeek stuff is consistently good (i.e. wolfgang coatings and sprays). I think you ultimately get what you pay for and in this case its like a ~$3 coating and marketing.
      As far as cerakote, I don’t really see any long term coating level durability claims from their product. It says months of protection, not a year or years:
      “You get the convenience of a quick detailer, but with long lasting results! Because of our proprietary, true inorganic ceramic technology, this won't wash off after a few washes, let alone the first wash or rainstorm you go through. It lasts for months!”

    • @BigBear--
      @BigBear-- Před 4 měsíci

      @@DmitrysGarage Right. Maybe since it'a more designed for DIY, it requires higher humidity? Who knows. My point wasn't that it's are your fault. It was that it could be a number of variables, including a bad batch, for why it didn't work for you.

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  Před 4 měsíci

      I get what you’re saying, but humidity generally works against coatings. Their documentation says it is “best applied in a low humidity environment”. They say 50-80F and under 60% humidity. So my environment should be perfect. I think it is like you said bad batch due to inconsistent QC. I got the product directly from their team. Scott HD did an interesting deep dive on their supply chain if you want to learn more about that.

    • @BigBear--
      @BigBear-- Před 4 měsíci

      @@DmitrysGarage Yeah, I watched Scott HD's video. It told me absolutely nothing. Lots of generalized assumptions, very little actual info. At least half the industry white labels, or customizes products from other manufacturers. The fact it comes from China, or that the manufacturer offers other product's, says nothing about it's actual chemistry or actual cost (other than we know that obviously it costs way less to make than what they sell it for, like any other product). Avalon King's new GOAT coating is Swiss made...and? It's either good or not, same for customer support, don't really care where it comes from. All that's to say that Scott HD's video wasn't some grand revelation, it's all the same info you could get by just looking at the Avalon King IX's box, where it says Made in China. I don't care to even defend AK, or their coatings, I just don't like baseless assumptions (he never actually tests the chemistry in AK IX's version vs the manufacturer's off-label products), or inaccurate info (his "conclusions" based on his assumptions, not provable facts).
      As for the humidity level. My only point about that is that it's just one of many different variables, and thay maybe it had something to do with the early hydrophobic failure. Meaning if the QC range for some products sets ideal range in say 30-45%, could be this batch came out that it's ideal range was either way lower or way higher. Not the only thing thay could matter, just one of many. Whatever combination of variables, obviously something didn't play well for you in you're environment (not your fault, or should matter to you, if the product failed, that's on them).
      Final point I'll make is that beading, or water behavior in general isn't the only performance indicator for a coating. It could still be there, just have unusual hydrophobic behavior/performance. But I get why that's a common form of testing, as it makes for easy visual representation, and comparison, in video format.

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  Před 4 měsíci

      My point was that other manufacturers have actual chemists and labs. i.e. Adams and their products consistently test well (they’re not a sponsor, nor have they even sent me free products). They are not marketing forward companies; they don’t just white label a product from china and then pump everything into marketing. They may get their various chemicals from china, but thats different than white labeling a finished product. Im sorry you didn’t find the video compelling.
      I agree there could be other variables. However, my environment is as optimized as it could be. So im with you, its not something I care about since most people will have less optimal environments. If you look through the comments plenty of other people had similar experiences so i suspect its simply inconsistent dissolved solids in the solution. Someone screwed something up when mixing it up. It is the most obvious explanation.
      Hydrophobicity is a key feature of the coating so this is why it is being evaluated.
      Another consideration is I never heard from Avalon King again after the negative review. That is uncommon. Most other companies take it on the chin and say “yea probably not our most X product”. Ive done negative reviews of Adams stuff (even they can screw up) and the conversation continued (Chris, their chemist/cto is great), AutoGeek has had the occasional stinker, again never got ghosted after. Lithium engaged with me and I even made a followup video when they acknowledged QC issues and I found maybe 50/50 working packets.
      Im not sure if they’re just immature, know the product isn’t great, or know there is a qc issue and don’t wanna talk about it. Typically my negative reviews elicit a response, almost always when its someone I have ongoing contact with. I will gladly do a follow up video if there is something to follow up on.
      I’ve really enjoyed chatting with you, I like these in depth conversations a lot!

    Hey Dmitry! With all the respect, I honestly don't understand what kind of surface prep you have done here, if on 3:17 (and actually both before and after, and during the whole application process) i clearly see that the surface is super dirty...i can literally see pretty heavy contamination (dots and spots) around any light reflection whenever you move the camera...and i even see a big peace of dirt or something black that you just wiped of with the applicator during the application 🤔
    As for me, that doesn't look even close to a proper pre-ceramic coating surface prep. Am i wrong?

    • @DmitrysGarage
      @DmitrysGarage  Před rokem

      Every test i do gets a machine pre-polish and iso decontamination. The dirt you’re seeing is just some material from the included black terry and applicator, its a pretty cheap towel. It came off when I opened the package, but thats not going to affect the test, its not actually dirt. The hood itself is from a junkyard, so it doesn’t have a flawless finish, but other products hold out just fine on it. Some for many hundreds of washes with this exact process.

    I've watched several videos on the AvalonKing ceramic coating and I like that this video attempts to inject some objective analysis into the review. However, at the end of the day there are no magic bullets with any consumer-grade auto care product. Also, there is always a lot of subjectivity as to the effectiveness of these products. There are too many variables that affect the quality of the results, from surface condition, to product usage, to environmental conditions, to maintenance. I just tried the Armor Shield IX for the first time and I have the same observations as Dmitry but I am going to reserve final judgment for six months. I do not expect any product to last for more than 12 months, and I am planning to recoat the vehicle every six months, which I think is a better strategy than trying to double coat it and hope for a year or two of protection. It is easy enough to apply so doing it every six months is not a big deal to me. If it breaks down in less than six months then I will try a different product.

    • @DmitrysGarage

      Thanks for the really thoughtful comment. I agree that conditions and even product batches can vary. Though I would say some companies put out consistently good products that score well in my tests and in my own personal use. For example I spend a lot of my own money on Adam’s products, AutoGeek house brands (ie Wolfgang) and a few others. For example the vast majority of coatings I’ve tested from Adams have been stellar. Ive used multiple batches and have had years of performance on my own and other cars. My testing also tries to be as standardized as possible. If you check out some of my newer clips (like my latest adams advanced video) my testing is further standardized through more mechanized tooling. You can indeed get a consumer coating from Adams, AutoGeek, ExoForma, CarPro and others that do last for years that are in my experience no worse than most of the “dealer only” stuff.

    I had a bad experience with Armor Shield. Last year I applied it to my Dodge Challenger--the paint was prepped and all necessary steps were taken prior to the coating application. I don't have a garage and there was an unexpected storm about 14 hours after I coated the car. I went out to the car after the rain storm and found that the paint was completely flat with no beading or hydrophobic properties whatsoever--the coating must have just washed off. Evidently the coating needed the full 24 hours of cure time before it could get wet. Naturally this was my fault, but I purchased Gyeon Mohs afterwards because it has a 12-hour cure time.

    Ha, that's just one more reason I haven't jumped on the ceramic coating train. Sure when first applied they look great but none of them I've seen hold up to the manufacturers claims. Get a scratch on a panel and more than likely you've got to polish it out and then recoat that panel and more than likely it will have more gloss than the other panels. What a pain in the arse that would be. That's why I much prefer waxing. So much easier to take care of. Recently I've been using Polish Angle High Gloss paste wax and although it is expensive I'm getting almost a years protection from it plus the application process is amazing. And then I found out some people who post pictures of their coated cars, etc. actually use filters to enhance the photo. Pretty sneeky if you ask me. There's one particular person who I won't name, but his shop is in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area and he's really good at polishing and coatings and his pricing is by no means cheap . Anyway his photos almost look too good to be true if you know what I mean. The gloss is insane and in day to day life I've never seen a vehicle that glossy. Well I found out he uses filters for enhancement, no wonder they look so good. I think many people see those kind of pictures thinking they can achieve that look and are disappointed when their results don't look like that super glossy photo .
