      Thanks! You'll notice a behemoth of an Asus in one of the D&D shots - that's an old Asus Gaming laptop I installed Arch Linux on to bring back to life. Found it in my gf's parents' basement.
      I find that videos about what to do with an old computer often say "install Linux on it" but then don't provide any actual uses once you've done that. I made this video because I was sick of hearing these ideas but nobody ever demonstrated that they actually use their old machines in the videos they made.
      I love old cheap laptops. They're the perfect portable computer. Zero stress.

    Awesome video!
    As others have said I like that you showed using the laptops rather than finding other uses for them.
    I'm currently using an "older" laptop as my daily machine for the most part, it's a budget model asus with 8 gigs of ram (upgraded) and a dual-core i3 with 4 threads.
    I bought it back in 2015 when I was a high school student, I also have a desktop at home but since I stay at my SO's apartment a lot I use this laptop over at their place.
    I remember thinking this computer was super slow and would be unusable in this day and age, but I've been pleasantly surprised at how well it's been working with multiple programs and browser windows open!
    I think you make a great point about not having to worry about these laptops since they're so easily replaceable, It makes me want to continue to buy cheap laptops for the foreseeable future! (whenever I'll need a replacement)

Before moving I got quite a bit of use out of my 867mhz Titanium PowerBook as a dedicated jukebox, running through my itunes library with the visualizer in full screen. It worked great, at least until I had to let it be for a bit to cool down

      Thanks! I think this video is relatively evergreen since there will always be aging-but-still-usable laptops.

    • @HandleDisliker
      @HandleDisliker Před 2 měsíci

      @@CanadianComputerCollector haha yeah. I feel like most of the "things you can do with an old computer" space is really, really uncreative. It feels like there is something amazing that can be done with them that doesn't require a few months to learn (circuitry, firewalls, and Linux to name a few), or isn't something that uses only one functioning part of the computer (monitor, security cam, etc.). While I am unsure if the ideas presented here are the "must do" things for an old computer, the ideas listed in the video really break the box that this community is stuck in. i.e., The idea that old computers have the luxury of being expendable is awesome. That is a brilliant thought, and I now have three ideas in my idea notebook that I'd live to try out. I'm definitely going to start carrying an old computer around with me now on haha.
      Below are the hypothetical ideas that I'd like to try out at some point. I have no idea how practical or headache-inducing the projects will turn out to be, but they may prove fun and educational:
      (Privacy-related) Rerouting a computer through multiple old computers, essentially creating a VPN. But! Each laptop has a personna attached to it. So Arnold (computer A) could be a sports lover, Bethany (computer B) loves the opera (I don't know lol) and so on.
      Streaming games from the new laptop to the old one. Steam has a "stream game" feature. I would love to figure out how to play my Steam library on my old laptops and avoid damaging my new(er) laptop.
      Stripping the keyboard out of a laptop, replacing the screen with a touch screen, putting the screen in the keyboard's place, and reinforcing the cover where the screen was, thus making this giant digital iPad of sorts that I can carry around like Daedra Meero in Andor. I would love to have a laptop-turned-digital-clipboard with me.
      So a thank you too! I didn't expect a reply, but I am glad to share.

    My main is an ROG Gaming laptop, but it's battery is on its deathbed, so I never take it on the go. My secondary/beater laptop is a Latitude E7470, not to dissimilar to the one shown in the video, but a couple years newer. It's got a 6th gen i7, 8GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, and a decent enough battery. It's totally a beater though. I got it at a yard sale for $20 and had to coax it back to life with some cleaning and reseating the RAM. It's missing all but one bottom case screw, and the power jack is extremely loose and sometimes won't charge the battery as a result. The i7 would suggest it was a high end config, but it's base model besides for that. This means an awful 1366x768 display (that has pressure damage (bright spots) I might add). I'm planning some upgrades to make it nicer soon, but it works as a school laptop for the time being. Mainly I found a 1440p touchscreen display for just $60 on eBay, and it definitely needs a new power jack. Possibly even a RAM upgrade and new battery. But then again that may bring it out of beater territory...
    Also got a cheap old Windows 8.1 HP laptop that was cheap even when new. Very low end specs but it's zippy with the cheap SSD I installed. It's my go-to CD burner, and a nice system in general when I need to use some utility that won't run under Windows 10.
    Anyways, great video!

    I have several ThinkPad X250s that my old work were throwing out, with a number of expandable batteries. All i3, base spec. On one of them I've put in an i7 board and a bigger SSD along with expanding the RAM to 8GB and put a 1080p display in. For around £120, it's a very decent device. Another one I've put in an i5 board and 8GB of RAM and is another useful one to have.
    I regularly take the i7 one with some spare batteries when I'm travelling and it's genuinely excellent. Could easily be a daily driver...

    Interesting and practical video. I bought a used Latitude 5404 Rugged laptop (Dell's version of the Panasonic Toughbook) for under $100 recently and have taken it to model rocket launches. It's resistant to environmental hazards (wind-blown dust and sand, desert heat), has a bright screen designed for outdoor use, and is fast enough to run light-weight model rocketry programs.
    And yes, the fact that I can afford to replace it if something catastrophic were to happen on the range is important. Ain't gonna bring a $1500 laptop with me to the desert.

    Typing this on the Dell at 0:05. That machine is really great, except for the hinges getting loose. I like it better than the new ones the company gave us 3 weeks ago. The screen is phenomenal and better than the new one. Keyboard has an asome feel. Port selection is decent. Trackpad a little small, but a nicer feel than the new one with force feedback. It has 8GB/128GB SSD, and that works pretty well. Biggest problem with the storare is that most programs today contain a full Chrome browser and therefore are like 300MB size. If that part could be shared among programs....

    So my daily driver is a little Dell Inspiron 3180 (A6 dual core/R5 Graphics, 4gb ram, 32gb SSD) and i run it with a cut-down version of Windows 10 i made in MSMG Tools to strip it of a lot that it wont use like Xbox Game Bar etc. It's almost like an Edgebook because i have so many things installed 'as an app' with Edge on it, from Messenger to CZcams etc and the relevant extensions needed with each. It's also got a dedicated 64gn MicroSD for extra storage like games and ive cut 1080p video on it in Vegas because the A6 has a decent lil GPU. I also have an old HP Omni All in one i use in the bedroom for a sorta HTPC TV because it's 20 inches isn't bad when its being viewed at less than 15 ft away like in the bed. It's running Linux Lite with a duplicate cut down version of Win10 as the Omni is essentially a 13 year old laptop but as an All In One (and it can run older abandonware games on it, so yay lol). The Missus has an older Inspire X laptop but its only used really for Discord calls as she has not bothered to use it since she got herself a nice lil Acer Chromebook 2 in 1. For D&D i use a couple of older tablets ive came across from tech dumps friends do on me - one is a Proscan 9" (discount store brand) ANdroid 5 tablet, wired in a new momentary switch in place of its old busted wake button, but it runs the 5th Edition Character Sheet app quite nicely, and Rocket browser for quick reference, and i also have an old Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1" tablet, with bluetooth for a nice keyboard and WPS Office for any game notes i have (used to use a bluetooth mouse with it as well but it seems like its not working now). i keep a lot of old tech around, but only if its of use to me now, and pass it along to others it may come of use to. Just bought a Thinkpad X220 for $15 with 2GB of RAM and no storage. The keyboard needs some replacement and the body is in a rough shape so I spend another $15 for the keyboard.
    With my spare parts (another stick of RAM and 120GB SSD), it is a perfect browsing machine I can bring anywhere for less than $50. The battery isn't great but I don't mind carrying a charger because it's a lot lighter than my 15 inch Dell Latitude I use as my usual daily driver

      For sure! If you're going online with it I'd be wary of anything older than 7 and suggest you go with a Linux or Chromebook OS install.

      If it doesn't work at all you can pull all the removable parts like the ram storage etc and add those to something that does still work, or sell/give them away.
      If the battery still holds a charge someone may buy that off you, charger too!

      @@CanadianComputerCollector Well, it's my dream PC I wanted as a kid that could never afford. It's got a 1ghz P3, 512mb RAM, an Disk on Module as my boot drive and a IDE to SD adapter for storage. I usually run it with a Geforce 2ti, but I've got a bunch of GPUs lying around in case I need some for compatibility reasons. I mostly Rogue Squadron 3d and SimCity 2k.
      It's been a really fun build, I've been working with computers my whole life, but using parts I wanted more than anything as a kid has been amazing.

    Sadly the batteries of old laptops are usually not very good anymore (to put it carefully), and this limits applications to locations with power available.

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  Před 2 měsíci

      Most models batteries are easily replaced if that's a concern. Our old laptops have been fantastic for battery, somehow, which makes them even better!

    • @fritz46
      @fritz46 Před 2 měsíci

      I guess it depends on how they were used. Some are actually surprisingly good after 10 years or more, but others are bad after half the time.The question also is how you define "old". I'm collecting laptops, and "old" can be from 1985 or 1990, not from the 2010s. :-)
      I actually used a 2006 laptop until 2023, but the battery was as good as dead after less than 10 years, giving me just enough time to run to another room and plug it in again. At that point I used it more as a portable desktop where I had power available, so I didn't do anything about it until 2016 when I gave it more memory, a SSD, a new battery, and Windows 10. It's still in acceptable condition, but I finally replaced it with a newer laptop for performance reasons.
