Leon Russell Talks about Song Writing

- As a songwriter, Leon's songs have hit the charts across all genres and have been covered by a diverse range of artists. Ray Charles recorded 'A Song For You', B.B. King had a hit with 'Hummingbird', The Carpenters with 'Superstar' and Joe Cocker with 'Delta Lady'. The Carpenter's cover of "Superstar", written by Leon and Bonnie Bramlett, went to #2 on the pop music charts. George Benson won the "Record of the Year" Grammy in 1976 for his cover of Leon's song, "This Masquerade", and it became the first song in music history to hit #1 on the jazz, pop and R&b charts.

Leon is very underrated. Many folks hear his songs from others and never known him. I am glad I do.
If not for this man there would be a lot less artist in music field ! He has help out so many and played on there records by the hundreds and always have been happy to help them out . I know at any show he lets some local new artist play before he coms on to help them get there name out there . HE IS THE MASTER OF SPACE AND TIME !!!! I can listen to his best songs over and over - never get tired of him. His music is so enduring - so timeless and beautiful. I'm 60, but I feel like a child that just want to sit in his lap and listen. He has brightened up my day so many times - I feel I owe him something back ! Leon, your songs will live long into the future !

What a Master! Saw Leon in several different formations back in the 60's and early 70's back in Denver. Always left the Venue with the widest grin ever...... Today, i look back, weep a bit, and know i was a witness to some of the greatest music we are gonna hear. Bless ya Leon...this one's for you.....

I'd never heard of Leon until the Bangladesh concert, but after he did Jumping Jack Flash I started buying everything I could find from him. Saw him for the last time in a small concert in Chicago not long before he passed and so glad I did. I hope he realizes how many people he touched with his music and how much we miss him today. His music will live forever.

Leon did write standards though. "This Masquerade" and "Superstar" are standards in my book. The only reason more people didn't record them, though plenty did, was because Karen Carpenter's vocals couldn't be bettered. A lot of singers wouldn't touch those songs in particular because of her distinctive delivery . But the songs are unforgettable.
hopefully one day someone like Peter Guralnick or David Ritz will write the DEFINATIVE book on one of America's greatest treasures Claude Russell Bridges . Great post Denny and the DVD with the extra hours of footage is magnificent.
Leon lived a life! So talented, knew and helped so many other artists, his life would make a great book and I hope one gets written. Started out at 14! Played until a few months before he left us. Love Leon and his music.
Leon just suffered a heart attack within the past week. He had to cancel his tour through November. I wish him a full recovery and hopefully the opportunity to see him again in Northern California.

Leon is an amazing and enduring artist. And he's got a unique vocal style that's instantly identifiable. He's the only white dude that can give Jagger a run for his money singing "jumpin' Jack flash" :P

Think of all of the records he's played on. And EVERY one of those artists from Eric Clapton to Brian Wilson to Willie Nelson to Aretha Franklin ..... would tell you it was a better record because of the musical expertise that Leon brings to the project. The most important player since Louis Armstrong! ( OK, I was born in Muskogee- I'm a little bit partial.)
