I drive by The Church Studio on a regular basis. I'm glad it's been restored. Leon is not replaceable. I've heard many stories from those days. Sigh. I'm glad someone is preserving interviews with the guys from the days of Tulsa's Church Studio and the Shelter at Grand Lake.

It’s great that Tommy’s son Denny made this documentary. Obviously he is very fond of his father who seemed like he was not only a fabulous musician, but also a fine man and father.
The Wrecking Crew documentary is a treasure. The outtakes about Leon Russel are hilarious and enlightening. Those guys all worked together and had enormous respect for one another. A beautiful thing!

I don't know what it is with Leon, but I just love him !
He "came into my life" after working with George Harrison on his "Bangladesh" project and Joe Cocker
in the early 70's - and when he came to the worlds attention as he began his solo career.
One of his best albums was his first one that had songs like "A Song For You" and "Delta Lady" on it.
His "Sgt. Pepper" is (in my eyes) the "Carney" LP - also from the early 70's.
Absolutely every track on that wonderful, durable album is a classic !
"Tight Rope" - "This Masquerade" - "Manhattan Island Serenade" - "Me and Baby Jane" - "If the Shoe Fit"...
Leon was a person I would have liked to known - and not only for his music.
He seemed to have such an interesting personality.
I call him my friend anyway.

Leon truly was one of a kind. In the 1970's after all the pop success that he had, he did a country album with a tip of the hat to Hank Williams in a sort of country pop style. The albums was called "Hank Wilson's Back". The album cover is classic Leon. It shows him in country attire and only shows his back on the cover. So funny. Sadly he is gone now. He and Elton John did a fantastic cd together several years ago. Buy it for two of the best.

As an aside, I really like the graphic design used for The Wrecking Crew. Reminiscent of the '63 Pink Panther credits. One of my favorite Russell parts was on Clapton's ' After Midnight. ' He used a heavy B flat descending octave following " After midnight..." What a great hook! A fine musician and songwriter.

So much of what we hear on records is not the result of the original band members, but session musicians. As an example, you can find plenty of Beach Boys recording sessions here. Watch and you will see only one band member playing an instrument: Brian Wilson.
