Mike Deasy is the pastor of my church. He just did a big charity event with this guys. He did a lot of work with the wrecking crew. He speaks highly of all these guys. What a joy it is to have such a man of God leading our flock.
I heard Mike Deasy tried to record Manson at Spahn's Ranch. And the Family gave Mike an overdose of LSD. Manson attacked Mike with a hatchet. Mike barely got out of there alive.
The wrecking crew made some awesome sounds together. I love the work they did with Brian Wilson. Amazing stuff. Wish groups nowadays could do that :( I feel like I was born in the wrong era.
The Motown studio in Detroit has a 3 story rectangle , I'm guessing about 4'x8' , that goes from where the musicians played in the basement, to the roof. I saw this on the tour and thought wow, an echo chamber. I leaned over and sang a few bars and it sounded incredible. Something to think about if anyone is building a studio.

How great to hear Jerrys stories!! 1975-78 I worked at United Western studios on Sunset where Jerry played a lot of sessions. Years later,1998-2005 I worked with Jerry's son, Kane. When Kane and I met and then had Jerry's enthusiasm and support, we felt ready! I got a call from Bruce Gary, Knack drummer wanting in !! Bruce had heard my songs . Kane Cole's sound and persona pathos were brilliant. Kane had a chip on his shoulder as many artists do. R I p to Kane and Jerry Cole. Actually, Manson had a very good voice in my opinion. His lyrics were too hippy trippy. And I'll bet those Melcher demo tapes with the Wrecking Crew are worth a pile if they still exist? My understanding was that Manson had been recommended to Melcher by Niel Young.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has intelligence that a million dollar contract has been put out on Charles Manson. Therefore in order to ensure Manson's safety, DOCR built a special housing unit at Corcoran Prison. That unit has become known as Manson's mansion. When Phil Spector entered prison, he was sent to Corcoran Prison and placed in Manson's mansion to ensure his safety. If an inmate is assaulted in the prison system the state is liable for the damages. California pays out millions of dollars a year in claims filed by prisoners who have been assaulted by other prisoners. Phil Spector has since been transferred to a prison health care facility in Stockton, CA. One reason so many women want to marry Manson is if he gets whacked in prison then his widow will have standing to sue the state.
Interesting, do you have source you can cite? This might be why Manson had his beard and jewellery because no prisoner is allowed such things in normal circumstances.
I'd like to hear the stories of Spector that he couldn't tell, although the one he did relate was bad enough. We're familiar with Spector pulling a gun in a session with John Lennon so he clearly went over the edge when he shot dead Lana Clarkson. Moving on, re Manson and Terry Melcher, again, I think it has become clear over the years that Manson thought Melcher was at home went the Murderers were sent in to wipe out the inhabitants. Clearly Mr Cole thinks likewise. Fascinating interview so thanks for this.

Ken Steiger One of my fave Spector anecdotes is the time he and John Lennon had a loud argument in the studio which ended with Spector firing a pistol into the ceiling to silence the moment. Lennon removed his hands from his ears and said “shoot me if you’re going to, Phil, but don’t fuck with my ears. I need those.”
He repeats a popular Misconception. Charles Manson had known that Terry Melcher had moved from that address and that there were new tenants living there. He still went ahead with the hit because he was crazy evil and he wanted to scare Melcher.

Denny you need to check this out. Barbara Streisand did not own Evergreen Studios in Burbank.. Artie Butler and Gayle Levant owned this studio. until they got divorced in the mid 90's. I used to deliver Gayle's harps for her to her sessions. I think you will fine that I am right. Let me know..
This reminds me of when Frank Zappa mentioned record producers in one interview, saying its not right to have some fat slob who doesnt know what the kids like dictating which records are produced. Melcher screwed Manson over by flaking, for all he knows Manson couldve been a hit. Personally, i love Manson's music, have 4 records of his, have all his music that's available on the internet, ive never heard anything like it, id best describe his style as improvised psychedelic country folk with a hint of crooner, its beautiful because he can play the same song twice and it will come out totally different but still beautiful. His music inspired me to play guitar, i couldnt believe someone could move me emotionally the way Charlie did simply with his voice and guitar. Ive said it before and ill say it again, Charlie made better music using a sony voice recorder and a beat up guitar in a jail cell than rich pop musicians have made on the outside, even with million dollar studios and computer editing, Manson's music trumps it. There is something magical about Charlie in my opinion, he has managed to positively effect my life without knowing who i am, turned me onto musical instruments and environmentalism, and i thank him for that. RIP Charlie
We need an act of Congress to require that record companies refund every record buyer their cost, plus interest, when buyers thought they were hearing the real artists who got the credit when they weren't. Why didn't some wrecking crew members start their own bands, do their own arrangements, and keep all the money instead of letting the 'songwriters' and phony instrumentalists and their record companies keep it all?
joe doe I don't think you understand the way the music business worked in the 60s. Recording sessions lasted 3 hours, during which a band was expected to cut three songs of releasable and sellable quality. Many bands of that time (and of other times) were great live, working in an audience situation, but simply could not cut it in a recording studio in that limited allotment of three hours, under pressure, with no audience response. So that's why the Wrecking Crew and other studio players in other music industry cities (eg. London) were hired to play the band arrangement flawlessly in a short span of time and make it into potential hit material. Hal Blaine says many bands that he subbed for in the studio were happy with this arrangement - they got the fame and glory and chicks, while the studio guys did the hard work and got the money.

True indeed. However, Dennis Wilson actually persuaded The Beach Boys to record one of his songs. I can't remember which album it's on but you'll find it. Dennis was the connection that brought Manson to Melcher.
"Never Learn Not to Love" was originally "Cease to Exist". It is found on 1969's 20/20 album, a disjointed collection of songs to fulfill their last album for Capital.
What a joke. Jerry Cole has played on literally thousands of recordings and innumerable chart hits through the years. Charles Manson is nothing compared to a great like Jerry Cole.
not to mention 'The Id', his late sixties psych band. Boil the kettle Mother is more out there and freaky (in a good way) than anything Manson ever managed. His stuff is just...mediocre

I lived across the street from Kane in NoHo before they moved to Burbank. I remember Kane jamming on guitar at the age of 9. RIP

No, Carl never lived there either. It was Dennis who recorded Manson. Dennis got his friends Greg Jacobsen and Terry Melcher involved as well.
Oddly enough, none of Spector's actual sessions on CZcams captured the ''wild man'' persona so many have claimed he had.
