  • An exclusive interview with legendary music promotor, Larry Shaeffer. Presented by The Church Studio “Legends.” Former Cains Ballroom Owner, Larry Shaeffer talks Leon Russell, Willie Nelson, and other iconic music makers. Cains Ballroom is a historic live music and concert venue located in Tulsa which attracted countless music legends.
From rural Oklahoma, Larry Shaeffer is a lifelong music fan and promoter. For Larry, everything really got rolling for him on February 9, 1964, when he witnessed the second event which would further his path along the long and winding road into the music business. That was the night the Beatles played the Ed Sullivan Show. The following day in the cafeteria at school, he and a few friends agreed that rock n’ roll was the life for them. Their eyes had been opened to an opportunity that had never before seemed real, let alone attainable. Already playing steel guitar at this time, an art that he quipped he was not very good at, it wouldn’t take long for him to form a band.
Larry graduated from the University of Oklahoma and was drafted into the Army.
The Cain’s Ballroom building was in bad shape in 1976 when Larry Schaeffer bought it and re-christened it Cain’s Ballroom. It is one of the only remaining venues from the ill-fated 1978 Sex Pistols tour. The drywall that Sid Vicious punched out is still on display in the office. During his tenure as the owner of Cain's Ballroom and beyond, Larry has booked and promoted hundreds of artists.

Was this interview also conducted in 2021? Loved the wonderful information shared. All that musica action going on in Tulsa, that I I knew nothing about when living in OKC (although a young teen when the Church Studio came about).

How is he not in the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame?Over two decades he basically built the music scene in Tulsa at a time when Tulsa politicians were not progressive, helpful Or supportive at all......Not that I think Mr. Shaeffer gives a damn about being in a hall of fame or receiving awards. Lol .Which I like even more.....One thing that should happen is Mayor Bynum should apologize in behalf of the City of Tulsa for the hell he and his family went through. I read some article where he says he's scarred for life, PTSD, it had a huge effect of his kids, his oldest son in particular who got teased in school everyday until he kicked 3 kids asses at once. He said that's why he sold Cains, and disappeared .....People who file false reports of this size should be charged with a felony. The damage it does sticks to that person the rest of their life. Even if found innocent. God bless you Larry. I remember the Toy giveaway he did at Cain's for 10 years. So many kids who wouldn't get a thing, Larry made sure they got anything on the stage they wanted. Pizza too. So glad he's back.

The comment above alluded to something but I don't recall ever hearing anything about that, or why he sold it.

Best interview yet. One of the most humble, kind and knowledgeable guys in the business. Crazy to think what he did was at a time when the City Didn't support downtown at all...Seeing the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Cramps, Iggy Pop, U2, Van Halen, Police, Elvis Costello, or Muddy Waters shows he brought toTulsa back in the 70's.....He even convinced Willie to move his picnic from Texas to Oklahoma. The 1977 Picnic is another legendary show. Over 100,000 at the Fairgrounds. Skynyrd sadly had their crash shortly after that show.....I saw he got a book deal for a biography. Thats one book ill be reading. Hot damn..

Leon's been making royalties off his songs that other people have recorded and everything he played on for years... his last house in Nashville is up for sale for 4.5 million. Leon was such a wonderful person he didn't live large but he fulfilled his dream of becoming a rockstar... I've met Leon and to this day I miss Leon Russell. I'm an audio engineer and proud to say that I was with Leon in New York City, in the 80's. Introverted yes, but a wonderful human being...
