This is a review of the brand new NIKON 50mm 1.8G lens. I compare it with the Nikon 50mm F1.8d Nikon 50mm 1.4g and 50mm 1.4d. You can download the full res images by clicking the link above.
All images were taken with the Nikon D7000 with the different 50mm Nikon Lenses. For a full review and final thoughts on this lens please follow the link above.
what you said at 1:21 -
I once ordered a 18-200, and they sent me a 18-55 by accident... -_-
Sorry Jared, I normally love your videos, but I learned much more about the 2 lenses I was looking at from Kai. He does have a potty mouth, but does not waste my time watching him sniff.
I actually have to agree with you
for sure! its so annoying that i will dodge your videos
I own a 50mm F1.8G and I'm amazed at the clarity for such a low price.
Good lens!!! Here are sample photos onfotolife.com
I wanted to see the images.
It's really cool that you use the D7000 for almost everything now. I love that camera so much.
@matthewt2010 well unfortunately the d3100 only sells with the kit lens.
hey Jared .. i want to ask which camera and what settings u used for making this video?? looks awesome..
we have been using the 50mm , must be from late 70s. And it has performed well on the D7000. Really enjoy hearing your pov. thanks
Thanks for posting Jared. I just ordered the 50 1.8G yesterday from B&H for my DX DSLRs. I have the 50 1.8D and want to compare the two. I have to keep the 1.8D for the film bodies because they're older and need the aperture ring.
@KarukeH hey there, what it really comes down to is build quality. The feel of the 1.4 compared to the 1.8 is a huge difference. I like the 1.4d that I have and you may be able to find that used for a great price. If you camera has the focus motors it would auto focus on it. When you hold a 1.4 you can feel the difference and in my opinion the image quality is better in the 1.4.
just picked up this lens with my new d800. Cant wait to start shooting.
Thanks for the review
Jared, I picked up a D3100 about two weeks ago based on your review. Would you recommend the 50mm 1.8g or a 35mm 1.8g as an upgrade from the 18-55g kit lens? Which one has the better quality?
I have the 50mm 1.8D and used it quite a bit on my new D3100 with pretty good success. It is manual focus on the D3100. I found it difficult to focus in low light sometimes, but I could usually get the shot and the results were often some of the best shots I ever took. I got the 50mm 1.8G yesterday and the third shot I took with it was a total out of the part home run awesome shot. I love it. Well worth the money. I'm still going to keep the D on the shelf as a backup. Too cheap to sell.
Thanks JP. Keep em coming
I have a Nikon D3200 and I'm a novice at DSLR cameras, would you recommend that I get the Nikkor 50mm 1.8D even though I can only use it in manual mode since my camera has no built in motor? Would that be a good way to learn since I won't have the lens doing all of the focusing for me or should I spend a little extra to get the 1.8G, which has autofocus? I'm asking this because the 1.8D is currently selling for just under $100 on eBay so I figured that I should get it.
YaaaaaaaaaaY
At last we saw a newer version to work on "Our Motorless" cameras !!
Great review jared as always
Jared I have a d5000 with no motor. I want to get a prime lens and I've seen an old 50mm 1.8 ai series e, manual aperture, manual focus. I'm a student with a tight budget the lens was just short of $50. Should I get the lens or shop around for a better deal on a newer lens?
Hey Jared, would you recommend Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC over 24-70mm f2.8 of tamron as well?...I already have a Nikon 50mm f1.8G...but, i want wider angle shots and can zoom but prime...thanks!
While a concluding opinion would have not been a disappointment, I, for one, appreciate being able to view the high-res images for myself, without risking a bias that I may obtain from hearing Jared's opinion beforehand. I have my own eyes, and I can form my own opinions based on what I see. Thanks for that Jared!
@Pagna978 Of course. I'm assuming you have the kit lens, right? What focal length do you usually use? I'm always at 55 if I'm shooting a product or a person, and 18 if I'm shooting a scene. Occasionally I'll go to 35 or 24 and shoot looking up from the plane of the table to emphasize a product's size, but I primarily use the long or wide ends of the lens. I shoot messenger bags that I make and other people's artwork with the kit lens, it works great but sometimes you want shallow DOF.
Just seeing this. Dude. You haven’t aged AT ALL in 11 years!
Hello brother!
Thanks for the awesome videos. I want to know from you that should i buy 50mm 108G prime lens for my Nikon D5300 body? I want to use it for wedding photography, portrait, street photography, landscape etc. Waiting to hear from you. :)
Jared, I'm about as amateur as one can be so I purchased the Nikon D3200 as I have a little one due to arrive any day now. I also purchased a 35mm 1:1.8G and was wondering, considering my skill level, if there was any reason why I would considering purchasing the 50 mm F1.8G ?
Thanks in advance.
I agree, I picked up the 50d and am shooting on my D7000. It's fantastic and the price is right. For me, I don't see a need for the 1.4, the 1.8 does everything I need it to do. It's a fantastic , good value portrait lens! Get the HR-2 lens hood, it not only blocks out unwanted light, it really compliments the lens nicely!
Hey Jared have you ever heard of the Nikkor f1.4 50mm AF-D S? Is it another name for the AF-G? I don't find the AF-G on the website of the shop I'm buying my lenses at, and was wondering if that's the same lens or not. What would you recommend between a f1.4 AF-G and the new f1.8 AF-G for a Nikon D3100 (knowing that I could afford the f1.4)? Will the f1.4 AF-G autofocus? Thanks for the review and your reply! Cheers.
Hi what is manual auto(MA) focus in the nikon 50mm F/1.8G AF-S and does infinity works in your lens. please Help me to know this. I brought it for Nikon D3300, and it's slightly hard to attach with camera.
It is worth to buy the G lens istead of D on a nikon d7000?
I have both lenses. D lens is great, slight faster focus than the G lens, but focus sound is louder. I use the G lens mostly because it has better bokeh.
Jared what's a better buy the nikon 50 1.4d or 50 1.8g...I have a Nikon d7000 so the motor isn't really important to me...im interested in the character of the bokeh and im aware the 50 1.4d's bokeh can start to look hexagonal where as I would think the 1.8g wouldn't have that problem...so do you think i should still go with the 1.4d or the 1.8g in terms of bokeh
Hey Jared, just wonder if you can answer this quick question:
The 50 1.8G hasn't been released in Canada yet, and I'm assuming since it's $220USD, it'll be around $230CDN. Now should I wait and get this one or get the 35 1.8G for $280CDN? I think the only main difference is that the 35 is a DX lens and the new 50 isn't, meaning it would be a 75mm focal length in my D5000 camera. Is a ~$50 difference worth the 40mm difference in focal length? Does it really matter?
@black02jetta i agree, spend a little more but you buy one and have it for 10 years or more.
Hello friend, could tell me something? I'm using a Nikon D750 machine and put the Nikon 50mm 1.8D lens and noticed a poor image quality compared to " younger " 20- 120mm f4 , I wonder if we really have reason to imagine that the 50mm 1.8G has bemmm more quality , my thought proceeds ?
Thanks for your help! Just got the 50mm 1.8D today and it works very well. Thanks for your opinion though.
Just got myself one of these just for the hell of it, and I’m loving it. Really great lens for the price.
Can i use auto Aperture with the 1/8D on a D3200 or will it always have to be manual with the ring?
The Nikon D3200 camera does not have a built in autofocus motor, but the Nikon 50mm f1.8D lenses is AF lens which means Yes, it will autofocus.
Absolutely not
@kav996 prob the 35 for the wider view.
@wadermanuk yes they are.
Hey Jared, im considering getting the Nikon SB-400 speedlight as a first flash, mainly considering this because of the price, do you have any experience with this flash or any pointers? Thanks heaps!
Got the 1.8 af-s G - replacing the 35mm 1.8 af-s G when I upgraded from D90 to the D700. They both feel the same, and it was dirt cheap, and I just love it.
Jared, what do you think of the Nikon 85mm 1.8 lens? I have a 35mm 1.8 a 18-105 & a 70-300. I like the cost of the 50mm but would the 85mm be a better portrait lens.
hello, i got a nikon d5200 and i would like to get a 50mm for it, but i don't know which one works better if a 50mm 1.8 d or g
Jared, which one would you recommend the 35mm f1.8G or the 50mm f1.8G?
@ryuuga77 the g will autofocus on your d3100.
D5200 50mm 1.8d vs 1.8g vs 1.4g vs 1.8d Any thoughts? I'm looking for concert shooting.
@blickblocks
this is some of the photos i shoot with the lens. mostly from 35- 50 , but some time i just need the 18mm.
lets say i were to shoot a group on stage. 50 mm will give me the reach for 1-2 person but then for the group shoot or a family i will have to back up. but i thinking about the the 50mm too. CAN THE 35MM BE USE FOR PORTRAITS ? CAN YOU PULL IT OFF?
I just start photography...i am thinking of buying this lens 1.8G. i was told its very good for close up micro shooting...
but which lens will you recommend?
Jared can you please answer my question? I Have the D5100, What type of lenses do I need to buy for it to AF on my camera! Please help thanks! GREAT VID!
please tell, this is a fx format lens but I'm using. a Nikon d3400 will it affect the pics in terms of crop factor as using a fx lens of 50 mm on dx body equates to 75mm..
yes, on a crocheted camera instead of 50mm you get 75. The lens will not get any worse from this.
Jared, I got a 35mm 1.8G, would you recommend that I get the 50mm 1.8G as well or just save my money?
Autofocus can be pretty useful sometimes, I am not meaning it's a MUST to have, but on lower grade DSLRs, not only it doesn't have a motor, but important to note is that the ViewFinder is a lot smaller, you might find it hard to notice that are you in focus or not sometimes. So I think having a motor might come in handy sometimes.
Love it when Jared uses the camera I have for comparisons.
Jared ! If you stop the sniffing test shxt in your videos, you'll probably get a lot more subscribers.
i'll keep sniffing.
Jared Polin Sorry, mate. I won't be subscribing then. Cheers
Whats wrong with the sniffing test? Everyone else does simple boring reviews, so Jared at least does it different. Get a sense of humour friend.
Yang Yang Why not just skip the sniff test if it bothers you that much?
Yang Yang
Sniff a roll of film and you will understand why he does it.
Jared, hello. Could you help me: I've got Nikon D3100 and I would like to get a sweet photos ( like in your backlighting tutorial part1). What can you offer me ( from lenses)?
Hey Jared, what kind of camera do you shoot this video with? It looks crystal clear!
@NLS87 Awesome! Thanks for the reply and the help!
@JaredPolin Will their online site be up sometime within the next year? I dont mind calling and ordering from them, just would be cool to see what they carry.
Hello Eric.
i recently brought a nikon d7200 with 18-55mm lens. my main reason for brought this camera is modeling photo shoots. mostly indoor. what is the best lens for me? is this 50mm 1.8D okay for me. my 18-55mm not good for this. anyway i ilke your videos lot.
I have the 35mm 1.8 and I'm really happy with that but is it really worth returning the 35 for the 50 or just stick with the 35?
When you say "will work on all Nikon bodies" do you mean that this lens will behave as a normal 50mm lens on a crop sensor? Or will I have the issue of it becoming more of a 60mm on a crop sensor? Thanks Jared!
+Hiker1792 it will be the equivalent of a 75mm on a crop sensor, all lenses are measured as if on a full frame. The reason this will work on the 3*** or 5*** cameras is because it has a focus motor whereas the old D lens needed a camera with a built in focus motor
I bought the 35mm 1.8G not long ago, and i love it. But I was also looking at the 50mm 1.8G, and I was wondering it it would be worth it to have the 50 also? Is there something that the 50 would be a much better application for than a 35?
I need help with choosing lens, as I dont have a full time job, budget is a must for me, but I allso want the best glass I can get a hand on. I allready own the Nikon 35mm 1.8 and I love it, but if I had to choose between the 50mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.8 is it worth the extra money for 50mm 1.4? Or is the 1.8 good?
Go for Nikon 50mm f/1.8 because it's basically the same. The Nikon 50mm f/1.4 is just slightly a better upgrade. But honestly, I wouldn't pay double the money for a f1.4
If you have the 35mm 1.8 and you are on a Crop sensor camera, stick with the 35mm 1.8... The difference between a 35mm and a 50mm is a few feet as far as focal length... The 35mm on a crop sensor is the "normal" lens, aka its 50ish MM equivalent on a full frame / 35mm.
So that being said, getting a 50mm to me is a waste of money if you have the 35mm... you can simply just take a step forward and get the same framing. If you are thinking about portraiture, then save up and get yourself a 70-300 VR which will give you the ability to do great portraits as well as sport / wildlife shooting... They are about $550...
Remember, you can almost always take a few steps forward towards your subject (or just simply lean and reach your arms closer) to get the 50mm equivalent with the 35mm lens, but you can't always move further away from your subject with a 50mm to get the 35mm equivalent (size of room, aka a wall is there) So to me, the 35mm on a crop sensor is the one to get.
the 50 1.4 is about $200 more than the 50 1.8g ... and since you can just move up a step or 2 to get the 50mm out of your 35mm... the ONLY thing you would be paying for is 2/3 of a stop of light increase for the 1.4... so that's $100 per 33% light increase... on a budget with no income... this seems wasteful... to say the least
To me, your limited budget would be better spent on getting a 70-300VR so you can do Portrait, sport, and wildlife shooting... when you get a job and can then readily buy new lenses at your leisure, then you should think about upgrading to a 1.4 or 1.2 lens IF, and ONLY IF... you shoot in really low light situations ALOT, and your camera doesn't have great ISO performance... Afterall, 2/3 stop faster aperture means 2/3 stop less ISO noise or 2/3 stop faster shutter speed for freezing action better in low light..
I have been trying to figure out which lens to buy with my D5100 (kit) next month. I now know what to get! Thx Jared!
Well, the D ones have one VERY big advantage. They have the aperture ring. That is so much better. I miss it on my 35mm 1.8g so i am thinking of getting the 50mm 1.8d for stacked lens reverse macro. What do you think @JaredPolin ?
Hi' can i used afs 50mm 1.8g lense for nikon d5600 camera. Thanks.
Jared what's the difference between the 1.8G and 1.4G, I mean it's obviously the f difference but they both got AF-S. Do you perhaps know what are the technical differences between those two models? Ty for answering
jared, just wanna ask for ur recommendation.. w/c do u prefer for d90.. 1.8G or D??
Jared, im still confused.
does this 50mm 1.8G really nicely works on a fullframe body without any pixel problems?
it's not a DX lens, am i wrong?
i have a Nikkor 50mm 1.8G
on my Nikon d-5100
do i need a better lens?
Jared,
what would be a better buy, the Nikon 50mm f1.4 or the Sigma 50mm f1.4?
Jared, if i have enough to buy a 50mm 1.4, should i get this lens or buy a 35mm 1.8 and a 50mm 1.8??
Hey Jared! Whats the name of the tripod that your using?
If i get a dx version of a 50mm (for my d3200) will it act the same as a fx 50mm? Or do i need a 35mm to get the same effect? Thanks
I got mine last month it's great compare to all the lenses i have i regards to sharpness, thank for the advise jared.
Couldn't stop staring at that Hasselblad and Mamiya medium format goodness behind Jared there.
For sports like a (Track & Field) what would be better? 50mm F1.8G ($200) or Nikon 50 F1.8D ($100). Because i have a D3100 i would actually be getting 75mm right?
Just starting playing with the same exact combination today. Focusing is only possible through Live view. Take advantage of the zoom on live view to get it just right. Takes great shots. Slow to use this way. Get the 1.8G and snap a whole lot faster.
many thanks for the review. super!!!
Are those hasselblads behind you on the right?
Would recommend to buy a prime lens or a telephoto lens first for a beginner like me? Ps. I have an D3100
I know this lens is good, but as a primary lense, would it be worth buying the D3100 without the kit lens and buying this lens to use as my primary lens?
Hi Jared, it is very difficult to a full length bokeh of a standing person with a nikon D3300, 18-55 mm lens. Is there a way I can take a full length bokeh of a standing person ?
+Koushik Dutta you won't be able to achieve a quality full length bokeh with the 18-55mm lens due to the aperture is maxed out at only 3.5-5.6.
This is really helpful. Will surely try it out. Thank you
hello my dear how are you?I'm looking for macro lens for nikon.can you tell me what do you think about Nikkor 105 macro?if you adviser for me please tell me
I own a d5100 and Im looking for a wide angle lens to film a music video any recommendations? xD
Have used my 50ƒ1.4D on a F4, F5, D7000 and D600 with ultra fast focusing, and sharp results except for getting a little soft wide open. I tried a friend's 1.8G a couple of times and it seemed to hunt for focus a lot more than I liked in low light.
whats peoples thoughts on the vintage ais 50mm ? . ive made a video using 3 lenses... can you spot which is which :}
anyone else notice its hard to turn the lens on the last little bit when you attach it? i dont know if its just mine. the 50mm G
Manual focus on any lens should work with it. I have a D5100 as well. I recently sold a lens that I didn't want because I got tired of messing with manual focus, haha. The 50mm 1.8G is AF-S, and it's only like $220, which isn't bad. I'd say go for it, and I do recommend the 35mm 1.8G, which is $200. I recently got it and I love it.
@ellagreyphotography not sure give them a call or e mail.
how does the old E series 50 mm 1.8 compare against these when it comes to picture quality? I know this only works in manual mode...
@estudio100rafa not at all man, i do not get paid by any of those companies and even if i did I would still call a spade a spade. When canon comes out with new glass I play with that as well.
I got a 50 1.8d for £30 because the filter thread had a ding in it and supposedly you couldn’t screw a filter on. Who puts a filter on a 50 anyway? I got a £1 UV filter from China, smashed the glass out, forced the filter ring on, essentially fitting a new filter thread ring on the top of the old damaged one. Works like a charm and I can fit filters if I want. Aside from that ding on the original theread it’s flawless. My photographic bargain of 2020!
if i have a dx sensor camera which one is better? the 50mm or the 35mm (both 1.8g AFS)?
To clarify before I buy, can I use manual focus on the 1.8d and still film on the Nikon d3200
+Ethan Clark if only it has its own focusing motor the d3200
+Ethan Clark MANUAL focus will work yes. and I'm not sure about the 3200, but the 3300 defs has a rangefinder in the viewfinder to assist with manual focus (though not in manual mode).
That said, the 50mm f/1.8D isn't the most pleasing lens for manual focus. if you're interested in a manual focus 50, you'd be better off finding a used 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 AI lens. AI lenses (AI-P excepted) won't meter with a 3200 but they're infinitely more pleasing to manually focus. tried a 50 1.8D recently, and while the travel distance from infinity to close was reasonable, there's no damping. the focus ring turns with the lightest nudge. ideal for AF, where less work for the motor is a good thing. but for precise manual focus, zero resistance means it's super easy to nudge the lens out of focus by simply letting go of the focus ring. .
Would you recommend the 50mm 1.8G or the 50mm 1.4D?
Last month I ordered a Nikon 50MM 1.8D, I use the D3100, was NOT a good choice! found out I have to use the D lens at F22 full time on the entry level camera, Just ordered the 50MM 1.8G Nov 23rd, will be on my doorstep Nov 25th. I have read alot of reviews on the G version, should have researched on the D lens, would have saved a big headache, I am thinking about selling the D, with a 50MM G I dont see any use for a D version on F22 full time, Some day I have an FX camera, LOVE your videos!
I think I’m
Going with the new one . I want to use it for the night sky shots . But my kit lens does awesome, on osprey shots and hummingbirds. Want to do something bit different. Suggestion. I’m buying it from b and h
i am using nikon d7500 which 50mm lens is better for protrait shots for wedding pic
?
yes it will work perfectly. Not the greatest feel for focusing manually, but far better than modern lenses at a similar price point. also will work well with an extension tube or on old film cameras if you find yourself in possession of one.
What would be the best cheep portrait lense for f mount?
Awesome video Jared!!
The bokeh between this 50mm f1.8g and the 50mm 1.4g isnt that notable in your portraits of the frog, do you think buying this 50mm 1.8 would be a nicer buy??
Thank you Jared for the great videos
@JaredPolin Yup, that's what I figured. I love how tiny the 50/G is too.
