The funny thing that I own this lens and clicked to watch the review 😂
@KETHAVATH ROHAN RATHOD me too . i was waiting for bad mouthing so i could say my bit 😀
Is it worth it ☺️
How is picture quality bro??
Yes. This is favorite lens for portrait photography on my nikon d7100.
I also have this but 1.8 d 🤣😂😂😁
Great review that I totally agree with. In fact if you think about it a bit, you could argue having soft corners with slight vignetting is what you want wide open, because you're more likely to be shooting a subject you want to separate from the surrounding. You only really need sharp corners if you're doing landscape work, when you'll be stopped down anyway for the depth of field.
Superb observation
I love your reviews! This was my first Nikon lens and I totally love the images I get with it. The lab results may not be stellar, but the practical use produces outstanding results with my D750 or adapted to my Z6 ii.
Welcome to Nikon's world Chris, really happy to see you ♥️
Nice review. I own this lens since 8 years and now I finally know the sweet spots. Thank you. Not a bad lens at all for the price.
So exited to see your review about the Nikon 85mm 1.8 G
Thanks for the review! Best one I've seen so far on this lense! 👍👏
One of the best purchase I got. Paired with my old D5300 it was a good portrait. When I decided to sell all my Nikon gear, I kept this one. And now that I'm back with the Nikon D750, that too was another great decision.
Ten years ago, this was my first serious lens on a borrowed cropped sensor Nikon. Loved it!
I adore my Nikon 35mm 1.8 DX, but never got around to buy the 50. You make a strong case for it.
Great video Chris!
You are prolific my friend. I just started my camera journey buying a sl3 last week. Trying to gather marketing photos for the dj bussiness my brother and I started. Always like getting some nature photography too. You've helped me get a handle on lenses and you've had a video for pretty much every questioned I have had. About to purchase my first lens non-defualt kit lens! Cheers!
I was actually waiting for it!
Great review video. I love it very much.
This was my first prime lens back in 2014. I still use it and is a beast. Sure the image is not as refined as the new 50mm Z 1.8S, but for $220 (compared to $600) is a no brainer
Thank you Chris for your effort.
Very good review as usual. I have used this lens for a couple of years, on a D5100 (aps-c, 16MP). It was exactly as described. I still own it and it is great fun actually, so I hope that I will be able to use it on a larger sensor. Now that you review Nikon stuff as well, I would really appreciate a review of the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G. I am really curious of how usable it is. Thanks in advance.
thank you for hearing our request. more powers to your yt channel!
I’ve just upgraded the wife’s 7100 to a 610 and thought I’d get her to try using this great little prime with tonight as the sun was going down. Then we come home and Christopher has done this video explaining why she should use this instead of the kit lens she was using on her 7100. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Right about what Canon's nifty fifty delivers but with a better build quality.
I used Canon's version and the LoCa and lack of contrast in the corners never quite stopped bothering me.
Wonderful results still, very versatile and easy to use.
I use exactly the same combo.
And i took really sharp and high quality images.
Amazing video and love how detailed you got with the F-stops. I have a D5300 and still use the kit lens, mostly for stills and some indoor video shoots. Will the 50mm af-s be a good lens to have for videos? Thanks !
Great review as always!
I got one of these a few months ago along with my D5600 and I have been very pleased with it. Definitely shines between f/4 and f/8, and has been AMAZING for macro when paired with an extension tube
Hi Nick, I’m looking into buying D5600, paired with this lens, does it still do autofocus? Checking so many resources and get overwhelmed by amount of suggestions 😣
@@alinazorinova3590 Yes the autofocus works great!
Thank you for this great review.
This was my go-to lens when I shot a D600. Certainly better than the Sony equivalent lens I use now with my a7III.
One of my favorite lenses on my APS-C camera.
This has been by far my favourite lens on my modest D3100 set up. It rarely comes off the front of my camera.
I love my inexpensive little Nikon primes. Thanks for testing one.
Hi Christopher. So for high resolution dslr’s like my (D850 or forth coming Z7ii) which nifty 50/1.8 is sharper then this one?
This and the 35mm are petty much essentials. So good. And very affordable for what they can do. Three lenses are why I picked Nikon over Canon. They simply can't compete against these lenses at these prices 😶
Great review! Subscribed.
Hi! Love your channel! Was wondering- out of curiosity- how long did it take you to settle on a format for your videos? they seem so well structured and consistent down to about f16 when softness begins to creep in as an effect of diffraction...
I've been doing them almost 10 years now, so it's developed over time hehe
Thanks for the video...I have the older Nikon 50mm1.8D lens, but I get GREAT images and sharpness on my Nkon D750 camera!
I had this lens before deciding to upgrade to Sigma's 50mm f/1.4 last year (based on your review). I always shot it at f/4 or f/5.6 and never really went brighter than that - simply due to never really feeling the need. Most of my photos with this lens are also cropped in somewhat or have out-of-focus backgrounds in the corners, so corner sharpness was never really an issue. And I was using the D7200, which is a DX camera as well.
You can also pick this lens up used for a very good price. And someone almost always has it on sale, so you should never really be paying full price for this lens either.
Great Review. Helped me make up my mind aboiut it. I just ordered one. Aloha from Maui
Nifty 50. I'd like so see a review of the 35mm DX 1.8 Nikon lens too. I adore mine.
Nice review.
But nobody mentions one problem with this lens and that is focus shift between f2 to f4.
Mirrorless users will have no worries but on my D610 it is a problem.
Live view is not always a solution in many situations.
My micro adjustments are as follows:
f1.8 -5
f2.2 -8
f2.8 -10
f3.2 -12
f4 -14
After f4 depth of field resolves the problem.
Otherwise a sharp, light lens best at f 5.6
Thanks for this. I have the D600 and I'm looking at this lens for it.
Is that problem. It related to the heavy focus breathing Chris mentions ?
Nice to see you review Nikon gear 😁
The still in production "AF 50mm f/1.8 D" is optically as good, more compact and is cheaper but is a "screw drive" lens that will not autofocus on the FTZ adapter or on Nikon budget DSLRs (e.g. D3000 series and D5000 series).
A really nice video thank you. Would this lens work as a mid to closeup for LEGO stop motion using a Nikon D5300 by any chance?
I recently got myself this lens and lining it already.. I'm new to DSLR and have been using the 18-55 and 70-300 kit lenses so far, the nifty 50 being my 1st primary lens. I still feel that for a daily use, it's tricky to use the 50mm as one has to be too far to be able to capture say landscape/ buildings for example. is there another good all round lens which is high quality unlike the basickit lenses? thanks !
I just searched for a review of this lens just now and the video came out only an hour ago!
I've owned a d5600 for 4 years now and the 1.8 G is the first lens i bought for it. It's rather neat to see it in your video.
That's the 1st lens I bought I have the same camera too. Definitely a great confirmation!
How did it fare for portrait photography? I am planning to buy it for my d5600, I have a kit lens along with a telephoto lens of 55-200. I was wondering if this will be a versatile addition to avoid a bulky travel bag. Any recommendations?
@@farisali8546 The 50mm f1.8 is essential to any and all Nikon owners. A must buy! It's great for portraits (70ish mm on APS-C) and lets in a lot of light for its price. Every photographer has to own a nifty-fifty for low light and portrait. That, and/or the 35mm f1.8.
In my humble opinion, most people only need a 18-200mm superzoom for random photos and a 50mm for anything fancy. A two lens pack is perfect for traveling, just make sure you stock up on batteries!
I wish I knew that before, now I mostly travel with a 18-55, 70-300 (kit lenses) and the 50mm. A bit bulky, but it's fine. Sometimes i only take the 50mm and my phone for wider daytime shots.
@@lordwafflesthegreat That was really helpful. Thanks
I got a Nikon D5600, I am looking for a lens for street photography, especially night street photography but I am on a low budget. I currently have the 18-55mm lens that came with the camera. Will the 50mm 1.8 do the trick or should I check out a different lens?
Thank you for the video.
Does this lens work for nikon d5300?
Question: i do have a 50 mm series E f1.8. What do you think, wich one has the best quality image?
I can't wait for a review of Canon's 50 f1, 8 STM on your R5. This Nikon 50 looks pretty good on the Z7 for the amount of money you would pay.
I'm wondering if anyone can answer this question for me:
How come in some lens they indicate 1:3.5-5.6g but the fstop in the camera can go all the way up to 20 and stops at 5.6.. is there any correlation with the focal length to the aperture or are they completely unrelated?
From 00.35 min to 1:27 min, all that photos are taken with d5600 + 50mm 1.8 afs? And are they direct jpg from de camera? Thanks!
Can't go wrong with the nifty 50!
Just bought my first camera Nikon Z50 and need a prime lens would this be a good choice?
My first lens when i got my D3200. My first ever camera. 😭
Mine too. What are u using now? I got the z6 ii.
@@hippopictures A7III
i switched to nex5 A7 A7ii and now that.
I love this lens
Guys what do u recommend?
I have the nikon d3500 with the kit lens and yongnuo 50mm 1.8 really not the sharpest lens only at f2.8 if you have good lighting
I'm planning to buy
Sigma 17-50 f2.8
Or
50mm 1.8g
Or
35mm 1.8g
What lens should i buy?
You are made awesome reviews of the lenses! I would like to see a 50mm 1.8D review for comparison. It will be great.
How do I get it to autofocus? I don’t hear the motor? Must I program the camera body to use this lens?
I am a new nikon user d3100, what are lenses that I should buy to fit in my camera body? Thankyou!
Which do you prefer using for z50? The 35 or 50mm?
Hello... I own a copy of this lens and have taken many photos with it. Many thanks for the review...
can you use this on a Sony camera? if so what adapter do you use?
A nice surprise! Been using this as my main lens since I started out and it has aged really well when going from my old APS-C D3100 to full frame D610 :D Not as fancy as a Sigma 50 Art, but it does the job well enough.
does it look good with the d3100 as well as the d610? im looking to get this lens for my d3100. im new to photography and im also not sure how this lens differs on full frame and cropped cameras. any help appreciated, thanks
This lens is truly phenomenal. I've had 3 of them!
Out of curiosity, why did you need 3?
@@opalyankaBG Sold one to a friend, and gave one to another friend.
Can I be your friend ?
Expecting some more Nikon lenses review 😌
Iam using 50mm1.8g with my z6.. But when I shot f1. 8 the image is not sharpe. And i saw some vignette.. Pls reply why?
The Nikon 35mm 1.8 DX is also a very good (and cheap) lens for APS-C.
Nikon has to make such small and inexpensive primes for Z-mount too!
The DX 35mm 1.8 also covers a full frame sensor - I use it on my film N80, Z6, and Z50 - it's a great little lens
I had it, it's a bit of a shame that it has a pretty busy bokeh in many situations.
@@escapewheel821 what? I gotta try it on my FX body then. No vignetting?
@@donaldklopper there can be some vignetting, depending on the aperture you use. Google DX 35mm on Full Frame and you'll get plenty of results. I don't love the 35mm field of view, so for my occasional use on FF the DX version is good enough for me.
True I use 35 and 50
0:16 How can you put it back? Mine doesn't seem to get stuck back in
does nikon AF-S 50mm fit for Nikon D3500?
Does this lens make noice in single focus mode or auto focus
You finally reviewed a lens that l actually own.
I got 35 mm 1.8 with d5200 and its stunning ! I think about 50mm
Is it Compatible for a Nikon d5200?
I had this lens. Works great, it is one of the powerhouses lens on my D700. Today I am using Z6 and 50 1.8Z, however I still like the color from the old setup. It was deeper and has more taste.
what is the sharpest aperture of this lenz?
I would like to purchase this lens but I'm not quite sure if this is the thing that I need for my business, I do need a lens to take a shot in a shadowless tent to take a photography of a products. Any suggestion and feedback would be recommended since I have no expirience in a photography field. Thanks
will this fit on a Nikon F5?
Own it, very good lens at a great price. Buy it.
Nikon d3500 se me use kar sakte hai
Christopher can you please tell me the sweet spot of this lens?
I've noticed my 50mm 1.8g shooting on the d5300 will yield photos that are slightly out of focus while using auto focus and using view finder. when using the same exact settings but using the live view, the photos are always crisp. if anyone has any advice that would be great because I almost always use the view finder
Yes, it happens because the viewfinder works with phase detection AF and it needs to be properly adjusted with some lenses in some cases as phase detection can be "blind" compared to contrast detection AF (in live view) there is no AF tuning option built in for the D5300 (which I also had and had an issue with a 18-105 lens) but if you take it to a Nikon service centre, then can do the AF fine tuning for you and it will work fine, like mine did.
I managed to get a Nikon f60 from a Charity store for £10 today. Would this work on the older/new film Camara body?
The mount is same. They would pair
Any good for indoor concerts?
I will be pleased if you make a review of the Nikon D5600 aps-c
❤❤
Hi, is the G version better than the D version?
According to every review website I've seen that has tested them properly, the G version is apparently a little sharper
Should it autofocus on Dslr 3400 which has no built in focus motor???
Yes it works, all AF-S lenses have in body motors, only the older AF-D won't have working autofocus on cameras without an internal motor.
D5600 with 50mm is my setup 🥰
Respect Sir
Pls do a
Afp 70-300mm nikon lens that kit lens
Would this be good on a Nikon d200?
Yes prime lenses are excellent on the D200, I have the 50mm 1.8 D & it's an awesome portrait lens.
I don’t think the dof changes on dx cameras. The fov does change but it’s still a 50mm lens so dof stays the same.
Hi Mr Frost! May I send you a lens for reviewing? Best regards Lukas from Sweden!
Do i need a adapter if i got a nikon d7000
No, only for mirrorless Nikon cameras.
You're into nikon now
please review AFS 85 mm 1.8G
Make a video about nikkor dx 35mm f1.8 g
Best!
There is one significant difference between the 1.8 and 1.4, the 1.8 has an aspherical element.
How come is it more sharp at 2.8f than 1.8f ??
Because that's just how camera lenses work. You stop down their aperture a little, they tend to get sharper. You can find all kinds of articles on the internet about the physics behind it all
Just watched your review on the 40 mmf2 z lens although built more cheaply the optics on the f2 seem superior I have the ftz adapter and was thinking about picking this up but I think I'm going to grab the 40mm f2 instead
Did you get the 40mm? I returned mine because it was unsharp at f/2, but it's great if you don't shoot wide open. I'm getting a used 50mm f/1.8 G instead, it's sharp enough from about f/2.2/f/2.5 and the extra 10mm gives much better separation.
@MrSimonj1970 yes I did it's definitely sharper in the corners I rented the 50 1.8g and it seems this 40 f2 is indeed a bitt sharp with slightly more micro contrast you can especially see it in the trees when shooting landscapes the leaves in the trees pop more on the f2
@MrSimonj1970 it's just as sharp as the 50 1.8 50 1.8 has softer corners but in the middle it's pretty close
@@nathanjimenez1562 not my experience, but maybe I got a bad one
i thought about buying this lens a few times now i wish i had its reasonably cheap at this point
The older Nikkor 50 mm "D" is sharper than the newer "G" model you reviewed here. The 'D' version is also cheaper.
Every lens review website I've seen says that the 'G' is better, which makes sense as it has a more complex optical formula. To quote Lenstip, "To sum up for the majority of combinations of parameters the new Nikkor gives us a better image quality than its predecessor"
