    I own both (plus the 85mm 1.8). For general photography, the 35mm is a better option (due to its wider focal length). However, when it comes to taking portraits, they’re not even close. Both the 50mm and 85mm are FAR superior to the 35mm.

    35mm 1.8G DX was my starter lens when I first got my D7100. I used it for both photos and video. Super smooth bokeh and great depth of field on APS-C. Also renders with great contrast, color and sharpness for such a great price.

But the equivalent FL to what the FX sensor on full frame camera would do would still be your DX number (whatever is stated for the lens) x 1.5. So you need to buy DX35 if you wanted to have same view as 35 mm camera (or FX digital) with 50 mm. At least this is how I get it.

    • @dr.franxx
      @dr.franxx Před 4 lety +2

      actually, the 35mm is for Apsc while 50mm is for full frame.
      when you multiply 35 to 1.5 you get around 50s, that's where you get apsc equivalent on full frame.
      because full frame is like 1:1 while apsc 1:1.5 (nikon)
      so when you try to find full frame equivalent for 70mm on apsc, you divide 70 by 1.5 its around 46 and the closest lens is 50mm or 55mm.
      basically, when you use 50mm lens on apsc, your picture will look like when you use 70mm on full frame

    • @axelljungqvist

      Dr. FranXX but if the lens says 35mm DX, will it show up as a full frame 35mm would on a full frame camera, or like a 50mm would on a full frame? What i try to say is: Is the ”DX” mark on a lens changing anything, or is it changing the focal length in relative to full frame?

      I would say with prime lens and photography, your pictures are going to have more of a style. When I used zoom (kit lens) all of them were different, but with prime it is more of a harmonious look when you look at all pictures, personally I love 35mm 1.8g(nikon), even self portraits are beautiful, you do not have to have your camera that far from you, but you still need a tripod for self portraits. But but prime lens you have to use your legs as zoom, that is not a problem with me. I wished I had money for 35mm 1.4 or 1.2, but 1.8 is great too, much better than kit lens. If you have the money, get it, it is not heavy, but before you decide, google the images that are shoot with 35mm 1.8g, and see if you like it.

    The difference not only the focal length, but the Bokeh also. 50mm have creamier bokeh than the 35mm and thats why its good for portraits. You can step back a little or set up your Tripod back a little bitif you feel the image js "to tight'

      @@BVCCo7 The 35mm F1.8 is wonderful on DX cameras. It acts like a 50, which is my first go to focal length on any camera. I was using it on my D7000. I just got a D700 and tried it there just to see. I kept the camera set at do not adjust for DX lens. Some darkening of corners occurred. Mostly correctable in post. On my D700 I prefer the 50mm F1.8FX version of course. Price is reasonable for both. The 85mm is more suitable for headshots.

  • @kpopdailyshorts
    @kpopdailyshorts Před 3 lety +2

    The 50mm you used is AF-S, for FX. Its is multiplied to 1.5 crop factor so around 75-80mm. There's no 50mm for Nikon DX. maybe other brand but not Nikkor.

  • @BVCCo7
    @BVCCo7  Před 6 lety +3

    I would say the biggest difference is that the 50mm is both full and crop compatible but I would still recommend the prior. Watch THIS to understand why so: czcams.com/video/3Sl8KVTPnxs/video.html

      An update to this on going discussion! , I have NIKON D7000 I purchased 35MM. It only comes in DX type that means it will give you exact 35MM outcome , where if you talk about 50 mm then it is not DX lens , hence It will give you ~75 mm outcome. I got this clear after looking at box of each lenses where 35 mm does say DX but 50 mm does not. I believe everyone having crop sensor should go for 35 mm as it gives you desired result , you can crop the frame after clicking and get the 50MM result. Trust me go for 35 mm not 50. If any one interested i can show u sample images i took. Leave a comment

      BB Johnny I can’t advise on whether you should sell your lenses. That’s for you to decide. I do wildlife photography and therefore don’t use my 50mm or 35mm that much but like to have them if I want to take any people snaps. So I’m not the best person to advise you as I don’t do the same type of photography genre as you.
