I DIY my costume almost every year, including this year! It definitely requires a little more work, but it feels a little more special & you get to be proud of it! Plus, you save a ton of money!
BUT for today’s video, I raided my closet, I raided my friends’ closets, and I raided my family’s closets. I scoured my garage for props. I hit up the 99 cent store. And I got REAL creative. I mean...I can't disagree
I was hanging out with some friends at lunch, all of us high schoolers, and they started yelling "MARTHA DUMPTRUCK IN THE FLESH! HERE COMES THE COOTIE SQUAD!", so naturally I jumped in and yelled the lyrics and we all had a good time. But immediately after, when I started singing "The party's hot hot hot! It's time for big fun, big fun!" I got the largest number of weird stares I've ever received in my life. Upon asking them if they even knew that the dialogue was from Heathers:The Musical, I learnt that they knew that solely from TikTok. I'm glad that musicals are getting more exposure, and it makes me so happy to see Heathers and other musicals like Bring It On being known by mainstream audiences, but I don't think it's spurring people to learn more about the song that they're lip syncing to. Just my thoughts.

I’m torn between whether I think it’s a positive or negative thing that so many popular musicals are on TikTok. I think that it is great exposure to musicals, however people will only know the 15 seconds of the song that they heard on tik tok, and say that they’re musical theatre kid. With the TikTok thing, I (as a high schooler who doesn't always get to talk to people about my favorite musicals (aka only Beetlejuice)) am very frustrated when people start singing parts of the songs and I freak out because I think I've found a new friend, only to find out they aren't actually into the musical and just watch Tik Toks, it really hurts. I don't get to geek out about the musical very often in my school so that's why we find it frustrating.
The Boba Turtle A girl in my class started singing Say My Name from Beetlejuice and I was like, "Oh my gosh, you listen to it! That's so cool!" And she was like,"Nah, I just watch TikTok." It was very sad.

When I was in my high school production of Godspell in 1990, my drama teacher assigned me to wear work out wear. So as Therese, a disciple, I looked like the '80's workout gym girl, with a t-shirt tied at the waist, a pair of black biking knee pants, underneath a black & bright colored print leotard. My make-up is bright colors of pink & blue on my eyes & bright pink blush & lipstick. Good times! I miss acting so much! Aw well! At least I still have my singing & dancing skills in tact!

As someone who is of the high school age: I agree with you Kat, I love that musicals are getting more exposure in the everyday media again but I hate if/when people who only know the songs from TikTok wont open their mind to agree that it came from somewhere less mainstream
