- In a follow up to last week's vid covering overdone audition songs, this week we're discussing the WORST audition songs! In this vid, you'll find categories & guidelines in what to look out for in your audition pieces- plus some real life examples!

Also, please keep in mind that these are just my opinions and the opinions of casting directors I've worked with. If you LOVE a song and you know that you'll book with it-- even if it fits into one of these categories-- go for it! This video is just a guideline to help you make future decisions. Every audition situation is different, apply the info in the vid as applicable. :)
Just because Dear Evan Hansen, Hamilton, Wicked, Book of Mormon, Mean Girls, etc. are in the thumbnail does NOT mean that they are off limits or bad shows. In fact, I mentioned a bunch of show I love in the vid. These are just specific examples within the context of this video that I would recommend against. :) If
you are someone who would realistically be able to play a missionary in Book of Mormon, BOM is a GREAT place to find material. And that applies to every show I mentioned.

Honestly, I think that fits pretty well. I mean, Lifeboat has that sort of sadness in it that Eliza has to show while also having that sort of frantic, strong piece that shows you won’t be impossibly quiet!

This sounds like something I would do. I remember at my first audition, Hairspray Jr, I asked my friend out of curiosity is drag counted as musical theatre experience, and everyone turned and looked at me, assuming I DID DRAG AT THIRTEEN YEARS OLD (I mean, I find nothing wrong with drag and absolutely love the idea!) but I was mortified. The casting directors didn't hear it, but my *amazing* friend turned towards them and said, "NO, AVA, DOING DRAG DOES *NOT* COUNT AS MUSICAL THEATRE EXPERIENCE! TOO BAD FOR YOU, AMATEUR!" 😐😑😶

for my school musical auditions we were required to sing happy birthday and IT SUCKED
Me too! Our high-school teacher directing the musical made it a requirement to either sing the Happy Birthday song or the Star Spangled Banner, because she wanted to know each actor's range. Not being American, I chose Happy Birthday. I started too high and kept plowing through, because I was too nervous to stop and ask to start again. I barely hit the high note, got a soprano part. Great fun none the less.
“Take me out to the ballgame” was my first audition song

I auditioned for Into the Woods with “Good for You” from DEH and they loved it so they asked what else I had and I sang “Candy Store” from Heathers mainly because I wanted to do interesting songs that have some acting in it... anyway I got Little Red and I auditioned for Annie and sang “Burn” from Hamilton and for my callback I sang “Tomorrow” and “Hard Knock” and got Annie!!!

Id like to say: "If you can own the song you choice to perform, like in really nail it - Then use it!" Meaning that you can use the simpliest or most overdone run of the mill song like A Castle In the Cloud or Memory IF, but only IF you really can own that song to the point where the auditioners fail into tears of joy.
But if you do not perform the run of the mill kind of songs to perfection then do not use them or rather use songs that fits the above list instead. Johan.
What if it’s this kind of situation?
My teacher asked us to send a 30 second singing clip as an audition to get into the musical class. Would it be alright in that context?
@@sindhu7582 I would choice a song you know well enough to sing great but still is qualifying enough to show youre skills and range. It cold also be neat to try and figure out whst kind of music taste the teacher has and or what he or she has done earlier.
But Id say that getting into a class is i a little bit different than auditioning for a part in a ensemble since its more imoortant to show were you stand singing vice over how you fit with a certain kind of style.
But the important thing is to have fun and show that you have a passion for musical theatre - Those two goes a long way. Johan.

This was recommended literally when I was practicing for my audition (impeccable timing right?) and I was getting kind of worried bc my song choice was kind of ‘basic’? The assignment was essentially, for those who are interested in being in musical next year send a 30 second clip of yourself singing. Nothing else was specified.
I chose memory from cats(how original) because
-1.) I could showcase my range
-2.) I know my teacher is fond of cats the musical
-3.) I was confident in it(though not so much anymore)

How much I love both Cats and Memory I must point out that Memory is so well known and so over used in normal auditions that its a risk that any auditioner might get astray of hearing it for the millionth time.

My worst audition song was also my first audition 😭😭😂 I was 13 and auditioned for a musical theatre class with "Welcome to the black parade" acapella, asked if I could start over in the middle of it, and then sang a different song. (I was auditioning for A Chorus Line 😂) Every time someone is nervous before an audition I tell them that story because nobody can make a bigger fool of themself than I did
