Join us for a trip down dog training memory lane as Dr. Ian Dunbar teaches you how to use reward training to help mold your dogs behavior.
One of the simplest but most powerful tools in dog training is to simply watch your dog and give your dog representative feedback. Don’t take their good behavior for granted because most dogs are GOOD most of the time, so tell them “Good dog” and give them a treat!
Just remember, there are lots of ways a dog can be good, and anytime a dog isn’t actively doing something you dislike, they’re being, by default “good.” So NOT barking, NOT lunging, NOT humping, NOT running away are all GOOD! Sitting, Lying Down, Standing Still, and/or Looking at You or Looking Cute are all GREAT!
SERIOUSLY, don’t take your dog’s good behavior for granted. Notice it and reinforce it! It's not very fair to complain about a dog's undesirable behavior if you don't recognize their good behavior.

    Thank you Mr Dunbar,
I continue to be enthralled, by your expertise. And an approach, that simply must be emulated. In a response, to sensible owner, and guardianship.

Thank YOU for the kind words! Happy training! Make sure you tell your friends (or better yet, show them) about the power of reward-based training!

So I purchased your book and I love it and I’m up to where you lure the dog, and you have another treat. In the other hand, I believe and reward with the hand that you’re not luring with. Yes ?
But does this method only work on heeling close to your side? I want something that I could walk my dog and he could have a 6 foot line but not pull past the 6 feet . Could this method work that way and if so, how do I do it?

No matter what you're teaching your dog, you want to try to get the food out of your luring hand as soon as possible so your dog learns that they should pay attention to you and do what you ask regardless of whether you are holding food. Once you've lured your dog with food a few times, you should try luring with an empty hand, and if they succeed, give them a bunch of food rewards to teach them that following your empty hand is very much worthwhile.
Yes, lure reward training can help you with loose-leash walking, but actually, the exercise you really want is Wait & Reward Training. It's super simple. Stand still with your dog on leash and wait until they Sit. When they do, take ONE STEP forward and wait again. Wait until they Sit and then take ONE STEP forward. NEVER step forward while they are pulling on their leash, only after they Sit. It's that simple.
For lots more info about teaching loose-leash walking, you should enroll in the Top Dog Academy on DunbarAcademy.com. Walking a dog on the street with a loose leash is a deceptively challenging task that requires more preparation and training then most people realize. That's why so many people are struggling with leash reactive dogs these days.

@@DunbarAcademy thank you for getting back. I did actually get your book out of the library.
I have done what you just said but he pulls every time right after the first step. I’ve tried turning around and going the opposite direction and he still pulls. It’s just overstimulated and needs to see the environment. I’m just gonna keep going slow little by little and hopefully we’ll get there. Thank you for your help .
