  • A classic TV moment from back in 2005 on At The Races! Legendary gambler and racehorse trainer Barney Curley loses it with John McCririck and Luke Harvey at Folkestone Racecourse, following the disappointing run of his horse Cristoforo.

      @dublinsfaircity Před 2 lety +4

      The side you take is where your moral compass is. Horse racing is a terribly corrupt business. Would anyone watch it only for betting? And it's a fact that 99% of gamblers lose so it's a mugs game.

      @@VCanisMajorisY Very true. And some are supposed to be trained "journalists" but are simply "commentators". Anyone could do the job. Look at Sky Racing. What an unprofessional group of wankers they employ. And look at Harness Racing with "commentators" like over excited Chris Barsby. Arguably the worst caller ever. At least David Fowler had enough brains to go across to gallops full time. As for media on TV in general...yep a farce. Look at breakfast TV on all networks to see the lack of talent. Even the ABC has gone downhill. I thought when Virginia Trioli left to annoy the morning radio audience in Melbourne, her replacement Lisa Millar would be a breath of fresh air. To be fair, she was at first, but is now just another ABC patronising "presenter". Not as bad as know it all Trioli, but Jesus, has she gone backwards.

    Barney was so crooked he had to screw his trousers on every morning, but he was an extremely generous man who gave away his mansion in Ireland to a homeless charity and never broadcast his many acts of kindness because he didn't do it for the kudos, he had a social conscience that is anathema to the betting industry for which he was a major scourge for decades. Much missed by so many people grateful for his generosity; he had a big heart and we will never see his like again. Rest in peace Mr curley.

      @@1967briano one of the big issues with having the exchanges now. Prize money at a low level is dire and easier at times to get a fancied horse beaten than it is to actually win the race. Don't agree with not trying at all but can understand why some do it

      Colin D Yes. I agree. Low level races can have prize money of £1900-2200 for the winner. Take costs out of it and it’s not worthwhile.

      @@1967briano Yes I think if you win two of the aforementioned races it probably does not even pay the horses training fees for the year.
