- Peaks Challenge is arguably the hardest cycling event in Australia, taking riders through some of the countries most iconic terrain.
Competing at an event like this takes dedication and scarifies, so when I told Jesse Coyle on the Nero Show I was doing it, 4 weeks before the start, lets just say he wasn't the only one who was surprised.

Showing the people walking their bikes up the hill is a nice change of pace. It's the reality for the majority of riders.
I put a call out on instagram for more of this footage, as the chat after was it was an absolute battle field. Remember it would have been even hotter for those guys, such an amazing effort.
But that's just poor gear choice. Why not put 48-33 0r 46-30 on your bike and ride instead of walking? With this ratio and a big cassette you can stay on your bike and move by pushing 150W or so.
@@ribbyramoneIt's not even that easy to do 150W after 7-8hrs of riding in +40C. You can even hear Chris saying he is doing 100W on the flat at 13:40
@@ribbyramone You do realise that on those figures you would be riding at just 5 km/hr. It starts to get hard to stay upright. Now I can do 5 km/hr on that slope but then I would lose so much time that I wouldn't make the 13 hour cutoff. 30 km at 5 km/hr gives 6 hours just on the back of falls alone. Even if you were faster on other parts of it so you averaged 8 km/hr it is still 4 hours or a third of the total allowed time. 150 W is just not enough.
Carnage was there in top 20-50s as well. Guys who train 500km weekly also stopped cramped walked and cried lol
Hands down the best video you’ve created, Chris. You summed up the BOF perfectly and those moments of your mind going to the absolute darkest places that every Peaker can relate to. Those who did this event in 2020 will remember the compete opposite arctic conditions and fighting hyperthermia. More of this pls and well done mate!

Well I am 74 and a Peaks Virgin, at 172klm the tap on the shoulder was my next stop was the bus. Would I go again hell yes. Unfinished business at 75yrs old.

I had a friend in their late 50's do the race for the first time this year. It nearly killed him. Somehow he persisted on after multiple health issues and didn't give up. He did a time of 12.5 hours, in the rider group 51-59 he came 285th. He learned from this first time how he should have not tried to keep up with the pace rider at the start. Like you explain he said finding a niche group of riders is a better option. I see your quite young, just think how the older riders were feeling. What does surprise me is this race did continue on in a bad heatwave. Sure last years event had the landslide but from what I was told the heat is what made this event like visiting Hell.
Yeah. It’s the heat that makes an already tough climb just complete punishment. It saps the power. Back of falls has practically no shade either until Trapyard Gap which is the first bit of relief you get.
The comment at 11 minutes about gear ratios is super real. I never used easier than 34:23 in training for Peaks but spent most of the final climb suffering in a 34:30. I thought I was prepared but was not.
I came in just under 9 hours, and the number of cyclist i know are stronger than me on the side of the rode walking and sitting was mind blowing, the temptation is real, at that point i just gave myself the new goal of not stopping, I was whimpering and laughing for half an hour. epic day, great video, really captures it perfectly. That dinner plain to falls bit sucked.
It sounded like a war zone, so impressed with everyone who got up that thing.

Looks like a race at the start for sure. Go back with a climbing bike aka rim brakes and you will go even better. 1:1 gear ratio. 100-150g of table sugar per hour, 1 liter of water per hour.
Great video - Can confirm 40c+ temps frying pan conditions from Dinner Plain to Anglers Rest, by far the hottest conditions I have ever ridden.

Amazing video Chris, shows the reality of doing such a challenge. In most granfondos I finish at the tail end. Life in the tail end is hard because everyone around you is struggling and very hard to find motivation. But once you cross the finish line the feeling is amazing. Congrats on your 6th spot!

I've been waiting for this video after listening to the podcast. It looks like a beautiful place to ride.
Amazing work Chris, like everything you cover it actually turns out better than some of the official media thats put out. Seeing what you went through gives me hope that I may actually be able to do this event one day without severly bonking or walking.
