Best highlight videos of Riggins.
Usually all you get is a few runs, his Super Bowl run and a lot of talk about his postseason play.
I remember watching Riggins run like that regularly as a high school boy when he was with the Redskins.
I would say having the hogs and an offense designed around his running as an older 30 plus back probably didn't make up for what he could have accomplished as a blocking back under Allen and Ewbanks as a younger back.
Appreciate you and glad you enjoyed! Part 3 coming soon.
His name is rigging, and players obviously don't do real tackles. And the league has always been rigged. Get a clue. This is a comedy.
exactly right!
What a privilege it was to watch one of the greatest football players that ever lived.
One of the most overlooked talents in football.
My opinion he is the best running of all time
I was always amazed at Riggins' durablilty, and how he managed to maintain his quickness and speed well into his thirties.
He was his on blocker! They broke the mold when they made Riggins!! He was a really good receiver, blocker and runner.Riggo was a fullback who could run like today's half back! John was the best because he was caring tackler's with him. HE CAME TO PLAY!
One of my favorite Redskins players. Along with Joe Theismann, Art Monk, Dexter Manley and the Hogs.
One on one, two on one, almost no contest. When he got stopped, their was three, four, five people on his back. Tremendous.
Riggins will always be my number 1 one back..
Hail. Thank you for watching & commenting.
No showboating just pure brutal football. I miss it so.
he never got the credit for how good his vision was!
Or how fast. Legit 4.6 40 at 240 lbs.
Man, he was something. It was just a joy to watch him play with the Redskins. He had size, speed, balance, quickness, ability to cut, and attitude. And it took a committee to bring him down.
Yes, he was amazing, and the team had amazing players.
Back in the bruising NFL days when a converted fullback was the Hall of Fame part of your offensive backfield.
Ol Riggo would hit you back. Great years of football.
He was one of the best
These were the days. He was my favorite player as a kid.
Great choice there was nobody like Joh Riggins. Thank you for watching.
!
I love these old nfl films
Glad you enjoy the films. Thank you for watching & commenting.
They didn't call Riggins "theDiesel" for nothing 👍
There will never be another running back like this
Yea I agree seeing guys draped on his back as he chugged along for first downs! Then remember they would show him on the sidelines after the touchdown sucking the oxygen down…. As a kid that oxygen tank looked so cool because he was getting it done…. Now as an old man I fully understand now why!! Lol
I enjoyed watching Riggins play back then . I have nothing to do with the NFL now after Krapernick .
Very pleased to have seen The Diesel John Riggins, The Tyler Rose Earl Campbell and Jim Brown. Would've really liked to have seen Cleveland's Marion Motley and Los Angeles's Tank Younger but I can imagine they all pretty much sent opposing defenders like ten pins. All great powerful runners.
the hogs opened the holes and Riggo ran right through them and man when the Diesel gets going, just get outta the way!
Well stated, my friend, "just get outta the way!" Thank you for watching/commenting being great supporter of channel. Hail.

Amen too that
2nd leading touchdown scored. Damn near impossible to knock him off balance.
As a kid growing up in Washington DC, John Riggins was my favorite Redskins player, and is a top 10 NFL running back..!
Fullback
Earl Campbell was also a beast with the football.
Man o Man! That brought back memories! I grew up about 2 hours outside of Irving Tx. So naturally I was a cowboys fan. My Dad would save his loose change in Sir Walter Raleigh cans and we would get to go to a game each year. I got to see big John play on multiple occasions and man was he something to see! Great running back and a LOT faster than people knew
Broke the state record in the 100 yard dash as a high school senior. I believe the record he broke was held by gayle sayers.
@@jamesbuddell7307 yes Sir, he was very fast
What a pleasure to watch.
What a tough, durable fullback with a 13 year career of demolishing defenders who was the original diesel before Shaq came along.
John Riggins is the most underrated running back of all time. I firmly believe that he's better than Jim Brown. He ran against bigger and stronger defenses.
Riggins, Green, Hogs, Posse, Riggs, Warren, Coleman, Manley, Mann, Butz,....I could go on and on. What a time to be a 'Skins fan. The only jersey i have is #44, though.
The redskins of that era were legendary, warrior heroes that everyone looked up to and enjoyed watching win or lose because they played as a team and left it all on the field. The Redskins/Commanders players of today, meh, aside from Heineicke Maclaurin, Chase Young and Wentz I couldn't name you another player.
Pat Summeral saying "Riggins barrels ahead for 8!" is art
Diesel with a super charger.
Motoring. Thank you for watching

I'm glad I not the only Redskins fan. Commanders is a slap in fans faces
A slap is not even the word for our team the Redskins, HTTR"
Preach it!
I'm a Cowboys fan but yes it's a major slap in the face to all REDSKINS fans. The people that protested demanding that they change the name weren't even Native Americans. They DAMN sure didn't do any research on the history of the Redskins and their traditions.
Get over it
@@johns3106 how about all you people that are offended by everything GET OVER YOURSELVES AND MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS.... YOU KNOW IF Y'ALL WOULD QUIT CARRYING YOUR FEELINGS AROUND WITH YOU AND START GOING TO BEER JOINTS AND RAISING SOME HELL LIKE MEN INSTEAD OF SAFE SPACES TO CRY YOU MIGHT NOT TAKE YOURSELVES SO SERIOUSLY AND YOU'D PROBABLY STOP GETTING GETTIN' YOUR PANTIES IN A WAD AND HELL YOU WOULD PROBABLY EVEN LIGHTEN UP AND GROW WHAT WE CALL A SENSE OF HUMOR..... THEN YOU'LL ACTUALLY ENJOY LIFE........
the offensive line was killer
John played for the REDSKINS
Watching these clips reminds me of what a tremendous blessing it was to see it in person HTTR
It's amazing that it has to always a gang tackle instead of taking on Riggo one on one, LOL....
When John Madden calls you a thing, it's a compliment.
Damn I miss the cheers of the redskins crowd so much. Good times
I watch the “we want Dallas game”. At least once a year and still gives me goosebumps and the tears of joy flow!!!
Excellent video, thanks 🙏
Glad you enjoyed thank you for watching & commenting!
Glory days of the Skins
Hail. Thank you for watching
Tip of the hat to Jim Hanifan.
Amen to that and a tip of the hat to you, as well, thank you for watching & commenting.
They say he never lost a yard in college!!! Think on that never thrown for a loss in college football
Amazing statistic, thank you! Can anyone else make that claim?
~~ JR's playing weight went from about 225 + lbs early in his career - up to nearly 240 lbs in his later years - he only started lifting weights in the later years when the offensive line coaches told him he could benefit from it - but somehow he never really looked that big - but many defenders said the same thing about him - that it really hurt to try to tackle the guy ..
LOOK AT THAT REDSKIN FIRING UP THE DIESEL AT THE BEGINNING OF VIDEO!! THE BIG REDSKIN ON THE HELMET OF RIGGINS! RIGGINS IS A REDSKIN WARRIOR! HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!
They call me "Chief" because I have been a Redskins fan for as long as I can remember and I will be 74 on 09/09/1949 just as Joe Theisman. I met Sonny J, he and I grew up in N.C. watching the Redskins on T.V.!
I wore 44 as a high school fullback because of him.
John calls me squeak we only lost 2 games in high-school our senior year we scored 457 points to our opponents 24 only 2 teams scored against us 12 each one game we won 72 to zero and the A team showered at half time
Mr. Hayes thank you so much for watching & sharing these legendary feats. What phenomenal memories you must have. What position(s) did you play & why does John call you Squeak ha? Was Riggo QB? Do you remember/know who actually nicknamed him "The Diesel"? Thank you again pls share additional stories/feats anytime.
My team is the Bears, and Payton was always my favorite. I just love to watch running backs do their thing. I was a huge Riggins fan, along with Campbell, Dorsett, Sanders, Alstott, and Marshawn Lynch. Now I enjoy watching Derrick Henry stiff arm fools into oblivion
I agree with you, Christian Okoye was also fun to watch for a few seasons.
Larry Csonka another true fullback.
@@geraldgarrett5088 Mike Alstott was fun also that art is now lost in the nfl because it's a passing league.
I always respected sweetness, he was awesome it's a shame he's gone, from a Giants fan.
I realize these highlights are long runs or catches. Think about this though. 3.8+3.8+3.8 equals first down.
Amen brother. Keep matriculating the ball down the field. Thank you for watching & commenting.
That was the scary thing about John, not any break away speed and elusive moves, but his ability to pound a defense all day, punishing them. Though he wasn’t a speedster, he had pretty good speed for a guy his size.
Usually by the forth quarter, no one in the secondary wanted to see John coming. That’s usually when John would break a big one. Joe Gibbs like to pound a defense and wear them down physically and Riggins gave him the right weapon for the job.
Big power backs like John Riggins, Christian Okoye, Larry Csonka, Earl Campbell and Mike Alstott don’t come around any more. Like you said, if the back is pounding out 3.8 yards per carry, you’re going to continue to convert all the way to the end zone. All of those guys were great finishers. They could almost always pound it through any line for the TD.
All of those guys often got off to a slow start because they were most effective late in the game, after they had tenderized the defense enough that linebackers and defensive backs would fall down or feign injury just not to take another hit from Riggins, Okoye, Csonka, Campbell or Alstott.
Mike Alstott wasn’t quite as big as those other guys, but was just as hard to bring down and was every bit as effective at the goal line. I always felt Tampa never ran him enough? Guys like Riggins, Okoye, Csonka and Campbell were work horses. Riggins would carry the ball 30-35 times a game, just punishing defenses.
Besides, it’s harder on linemen to pass block all day, since they are dropping backwards most of the time. When you run your line gets to dish out the punishment to the defensive line and a power back can pound any LB or DB left in the way. I like the old smash-mouth kind of football and kind of miss it.
Too many big time QBs want to rack up stats and they can only do that passing, but those games often come down to who has the ball last. Without the ability to control the clock, it’s hard to hold on to a slight lead. Riggo allowed Gibbs to completely own the clock, keeping the ball out of the hands of any dangerous QBs in the last minutes.
That’s why Gibbs is a hall of famer and the only coach to ever win three Super Bowls with three different QBs and that accomplishment is larger than it seems to most. It showed that Gibb’s stars were his offensive line and he proved that with a dominating offensive line, you could win with any QB. It’s a lot easier to win multiple Super Bowls when you got lucky in the draft and got a Joe Montana, John Elway or Tom Brady.
That’s why Washington never had to pay some ridiculous amount of salary to some Prima Donna QB under Gibbs. Joe could win championships with even Rypien as QB. That’s not something most any other coach could do.
Tenderize.😀👍😀👍😀
@@RoarOfWolverine He was a two time State champion in the 100 yard dash. He had some speed!
@@RoarOfWolverine amen to your post!! That was a great break down!
Great feet as well. Body control.
Incredible balance.
yeah part two

wiener rider wiener rider!!!!
My favorite redskin besides Joey T
Two great choices. Thank you for watching & commenting.

Football King. Thank you for watching & commenting.
They probably called him the diesel because his last name was Riggin's as in rig a vehicle to tow.
And that's probably why they rigged some games for him to, I don't know.
riggins, the bus. or brown great debate fuel
Never fumbled
He didn 't run on electricity, he ran on fuel!
Why did John leave the NY jets???
With today's soft rules he probably would get a penalty for the way that he runs with the football, I love those old games they just played hard and no celebration for getting a first down like they do now even if they down by a large margin.
How in heck did the Jets let him go?
Because Namath called the plays and some games John only ran the ball 5 times. Joe's ego.
The Redskins were killed by Dan Snyder … may he rot in hell for being a coward. What great memories of a great physical team that would pound opponents into the dirt.
What a waste of talent by Ewbank and Allen.
Pretty fly for a White guy!😜
1984 Super Bowl, the Raiders defense made the Diesel look like a 2 horse power Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine.
Riggins had the flu that day!
Copied Shula's playbook with Csonka
I hated this team man hated them I was a young man who got attached to the Dallas Cowboys and man I hated Higgins and the Hogs. Joe Theismann was a complete jackass as well. So back than you were a redskin fan, a cowboys fan, or a steelers fan. RLTW 3/75
The original Nigerian Nightmare style runner!
no celebrating, just back to the huddle for the next play
12 game season
Riggo never got credit for being athletic and fast cause he was white, but rarely did you see those black boys catch him in the open field
💯 The stereotype is ridiculous
Yea I agree seeing guys draped on his back as he chugged along for first downs! Then remember they would show him on the sidelines after the touchdown sucking the oxygen down…. That's hilarious...the oxygen afterwards always stands out as a Riggo moment for me, too.
