  • The most elusive runningback ever to play football. The best overall runningback in NFL history not named Jim Brown. Barry ran for over 15,000 yards and 99 touchdowns, stopping short of the all time rushing record at the time when he retired after the 1998 season. His accolades speak for themself; 6x All Pro, 10x Pro Bowler, 1994 and 1997 Offensive Player of the Year, 1997 NFL Co-MVP, and a Hall of Famer.

Unlike Brady. He played this last year because he wanted all time yards & Drew Brees retired last year. Give credit where due, he was a great QB but I have no doubt that was his main reason. If Brees didn't retire last year Brady might have. Brady didn't announce his intensions til after Brees retired. Sanders was one bad man . 1 more year & he would have had record . Sucks he never got to play in a Super Bowl. Hell, barely a playoff & still today is the only playoff win the Lions have

Barry was something else. To be fair about it, the Lions had a pretty good passing game during Barry's tenure with the Lions. Herman Moore, Brett Perriman and Johnny Morton caught a lot of passes and touchdowns. The Lions fell victim to an inordinate amount of good old fashioned bad luck in many close losses. That Honolulu Blue and Silver uniform of the Lions is the closest thing to formal wear in the NFL.

See ive always thought of Sanders and Payton as 2 sides of the perfect running back. Sanders is gonna dodge you and make you look silly. Payton is gonna run through you and make you look silly. I could watch both of their highlights forever. Both really never had a great o-line for their careers.

Barry Sanders, is the greatest of all times, You know what Emmit Smith was doing his 11th and 12th yr, CATCHING UP TO HIS BETTERS, that is the equivalent of a person graduating high school at the age of 20, he could not get it done in the time allotted. I suppose if someone stayed in the nfl for 20 years with crap stats they would be considered the best. You would think with the cowboys offensive line Emmit would have done much better. If you pay attention to the plays where it seems Barry's own quarterback was trying to kill him for Barry to still make gains is phenomenal. Emmit is the no kid left behind, someone really felt sorry for him to claim he is better.

please save your breath about others like emmit smith. to compare him in the same breath as barry is an insult. ES was so one dimensional it is pathetic. the only thing ES ever faked out was the public into thinking he was something specail.

The biggest lie ever propagated by NFL sports pundits, is the Lions didn't have a great offensive line. Nothing could farther from the truth. Uniformed, ignorance, completely bullxxxx. Ken Glover was the best center in the NFL played 8 years during most of Sanders career. Lomas Brown all pro, every year of his career, Bill Fralic, Dave Lutz made the pro-bowl. Jeff Hardings another all pro Lions and Steelers. Mike Utley would of played in a pro- bowl in 1991 if hadn't been for the devastating injury he sustained near the end of the 1991 season. It ended his career. Eric Andelosick was probably the best, out all the Lions O- line during Sanders career. He was killed by a drunk driver, in his front yard raking leaves. The Lions had great O-lines during the Barry Sanders era in Detroit. Ask Barry yourselves!

If I started a franchise I still take Emmitt. What do you not get with him? He's a better blocker, more durable, drives his whole team to victory with one arm and does this stuff too: czcams.com/video/rhgdKzwoRU0/video.html It's the easiest choice one can make.

    • @dukewilson14

The Fords let the fans down, not Barry. Consistently great for 10 seasons without the best supporting cast around him. The notion that he let the fans down is absurd to me. At the end of the day, it's his body he's putting on the line by playing so if he doesn't want to play (regardless of reason), then I can't fault him for retiring.
