    It crushes me that this game is only on Apple Arcade. Would love to finally be able to play a Puyo Puyo game since I barely have access to anything past Puyo Puyo Quest. I could play Quest, and have but, in constradt with other JP only titles... Being out of the loop on what's going on in game due to the language barrier throws me off just enough that I just stop playing...
    Would emulate other Puyo titles if I could, but I can almost never get emulators to work for me so...
    Would have been nice, but oh well.
    I'm honestly just glad that we have a new, localized Puyo Puyo game.

      As someone that has been playing Quest on and off since launch, it's so rough coming back after breaks. Thank goodness for the Puyo Nexus Wiki and all the work Hisashi/his team do to keep everything up to date with current events. It's a shame it took this long for the series to step out of Japan, but hopefully it's here to stay now...
      Let's just work on the whole "exclusive" part!

    Great video! Thank you for putting out such a good, comprehensive overview of the game, it is really needed!
    On the dead online mode, I am afraid that's entirely down to how bad it feels to play on the Apple Arcade Online servers. Even with the best connection, ping is through the roof and everything stutters. It's noticable that the online Mode in PuyoTet2 has actually gotten a big boost in activity (and it was already active before) in the Puyo Tsuu mode after Puzzle Pop released. It feels like this isn't an issue of a lack of players, but players trying the online mode, barely being able to get it to work, and just immediately going back to Switch for VS play instead...
    This NEEDS to be fixed, badly.

    • @mchaosg
      @mchaosg  Před 2 měsíci +5

      Thanks for watching! That would make sense, I actually recorded the Champions footage in this video during the release week of Puzzle Pop and it was also very active. I do think the issue resides on Apple's end and I imagine the issue is exacerbated due to the amount of devices restricted to wireless. It's a bummer because I love playing Fever and would of loved a change of scenery, but I guess I'll have to stick with Champions...

    • @missingno_fgc
      @missingno_fgc Před 2 měsíci +1

      I honestly don't think any software patch could make a difference here. Only 2000 players even registered on the leaderboard tells me that's it's not just a matter of people trying it and bouncing off, but that very few people have ever tried it to begin with. I don't think this game will ever get enough of a critical mass of players to sustain an active matchmaking pool. Not while it's exclusive to Apple Arcade.
      This is why I keep hammering on the importance of crossplay. All this time I've really been trying to say that Sega's release strategy has divided up the playerbase too much, and this further exacerbates that problem. I keep asking for One Definitive Game With Crossplay, because that way we would have a much healthier online queue, not to mention tournament scene.

    • @mchaosg
      @mchaosg  Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@missingno_fgc I agree, I don't see this growing much further either. I do think the inclusion of bots itself interesting, perhaps SEGA didn't anticipate a competitive scene around this game to begin with. The casual player is unlikely to go online and unless you're playing with a controller, you're at a disadvantage using touch controls as well. Maybe it's just included as a courtesy?
      Here's hoping if Puzzle Pop gets a console port or the next console Puyo game does get the online right.

    I just hate that after 4 years, the new puyo game that's solely about puyo is not only locked behind an OS and a specific set of systems, but it's also behind a monthly paywall. I just don't get it with SEGA.

    With Sega not only adding more content to the story mode, but adding entirely new game modes in these updates, it’s clear that they want more out of this game. It’s entirely possible that, given enough time, resources, and care, Puzzle Pop could become the definitive Puyo game for the west. Which is crazy to say about a mobile game of all things. Too bad it’s locked to a subscription service for the time being…

    • @mchaosg
      @mchaosg  Před 2 měsíci +5

      I think you're right, in one of the interviews, one of the developers mentioned he's going all out for future updates and wants a night/day difference looking back when the updates are complete. I think there's more going on here than we know, at least hopefully...

  • @Nenilein
    @Nenilein Před 2 měsíci +32

    "It's not as funny as PuyoTet1 and 2" I'm afraid that's entirely down to the localization. I've played in Japanese and uh. The translation of the side-stories especially was rushed and several really good jokes were just entirely lost in the process. Generally, this game is less comedy-focused in the main story than Tet1 and Tet2 were, but the side-stories are even funnier than those two games in my opinion. The problem is that the clearly rushed localization destroys a lot of the jokes. I hope this gets fixed down the line, but the huge amounts of voice acting that would need to be redone for that make me doubtful.

    • @mchaosg
      @mchaosg  Před 2 měsíci +9

      That's a bummer, but it wouldn't surprise me. A lot of the dialogue doesn't actually match with what the actors were saying, often with the actors adding more personality than what is actually displayed.

    This is kind of a bigger issue I feel like SEGA has, but I just feel like it’s really annoying that every IP they have keeps getting put behind this gate of “You gotta buy this game or you can say goodbye to this IP for another 10,000 years of darkness!” Like I get they need to measure interest but it’s like… the amount of interest in these games never mattered to them before… like idk how many posts I saw asking for ports of chronicles, or video essays about SMB. At the end of the day it is what it is now ig but it’s certainly not giving SEGA any brownie points from me. I’ll save those for when they make good on their promises lmao

    I don't know how you feel about this but I also heard that Puyo Puyo's mother series (Madou Monogatari) is getting another game made by the original company that created the series, Compile (Now Compile Heart). I think they really want to expand the franchise and even bring back old series that they had. So I am hoping this franchise/IP does well because I just adore all the characters and the lore (especially the Madou Monogatari lore) and want to see more of it.

    The most damning indictment of this game is the fact that not a single person is playing it online.
    Actually, no, that's the second most damning. The most damning is the fact that Sega evidently knew this was gonna happen and just tried to cover it up with bots.
    I've been saying for years that the most important thing Sega needs to do is crossplay. The playerbase has gotten too divided because we don't just have one proper definitive game for everyone, and that's the only way to undo the damage. But after all these years, we got this instead, and now nobody is playing it.

    I'm glad that I opted to pick up an Apple TV box to play Sonic Dream Team, considering Sega seems keen to continue these Apple Arcade releases. I'm really conflicted about Apple Arcade in general, however... On one hand, I appreciate the fact that Apple Arcade games are much closer to *actual games*, without any of the typical scummy mobile game tactics like gacha mechanics or overpriced microtransactions. As well, I also like that it gives companies an excuse to make "smaller scale" titles that they might not be able to justify making for the bigger consoles. In a way, it reminds me of the mentality companies used to have surrounding older gaming handhelds. And Apple is seemingly the one pumping all the money into this to make these games happen, so perhaps Puzzle Pop wouldn't have existed were it not for Apple Arcade... but, obviously, on the other hand the complete lack of permanence that these games have is terrible. Sega has already made and delisted their Apple Arcade-exclusive Chu Chu Rocket, and they've been radio silent on porting it. So I can't help but worry about the same thing happening to their other Apple Arcade titles. Not to mention the fact that the service itself will almost certainly not last forever in any case.
    At the very least, it seems like Apple Arcade games funded by Apple themselves aren't necessarily permanently barred from being ported, as there are examples of AA games making it to other systems, such as the TMNT game that was recently shown at the Nintendo Indie World presentation. Whether or not games like Sonic Dream Team or Puyo Puyo will get ported to other systems, seems like it'll come down to how Sega feels about it... Which is never encouraging.
    Well, at any rate, throwing all that context aside I really love Puzzle Pop. It almost feels like compensation for Puyo Puyo Chronicle never making it over here. Just having a new Puyo game with a fresh UI and (kinda) fresh style all-around feels great.

    • @mchaosg
      @mchaosg  Před 2 měsíci

    A cursory glance at the other titles on Apple Arcade suggests to me that this is a platform for quick fix type games rather than substantial console games; somewhere in the space between mobile and console gaming, so I get the feeling that even if this playerbase gets roped into this kinda game, they certainly won't delve into all its content. Unless they port this game to other platforms I feel like the story and assets are going to waste, and the lore payoffs and fine-tuned characterization will go underappreciated.

    It just makes me sad that the already small fanbase of Puyo in the west keeps being divided up further by device. Like, it literally made no sense that Puyo Puyo Tetris 1 & 2 and Champions didn't have crossplay, for example. So PC players can't play with Switch players, dividing the players up by console. This takes that even further; who actually has Apple Arcade? Lol.
    From all I've seen in your review here, the game does seem decent enough, but absolutely not worth going out of your way to get both an Apple Device, and a service subscription just to play it. You claim early on in the video that Puyo Puyo is a big deal in Japan, before claiming its appearance on Apple Arcade is “not a big deal”. It clearly is a big deal - Apple is trying to use Puyo Puyo to grow subscriptions and engagement with the service in the Japanese market, which is one of the markets with a high (almost 50%) penetration of iPhones vs Android devices. Japan is also a mobile gaming nation, unlike the western markets that skew toward console gaming. The poll you ran on Twitter is redundant in the context of this.
    I think if Sega struck a deal similar to Samba de Amigo, where it could appear on Switch as well, they’d be able to target the global audience more effectively. But I disagree that this game isn’t a big deal for the service.
