How to Make a Tamiya Rising Fighter Transmission Brace

- I have been slowly upgrading my Tamiya Rising Fighter since I bought it a couple of years ago. All upgrades so far have been on a low-budget. I have been unhappy with the way the rear-end (transmission or gearbox housing) slaps up and down when accelerating, braking and riding over rough terrain. So I decided to keep it low-budget and create my own brace to stop the clatter, but still retain the ability of the rear to allow a little independent movement of each rear wheel. This video shows how I designed and made my own transmission stabilisation solution.
If you have a Tamiya Hornet, Grasshopper II, Lunchbox or Midnight Pumpkin that employs a similar transmission/gearbox system (where the front mount is designed to move up-and-down) then the ideas and processes explained in this video might help you to create your own solution for your Tamiya. - Auta a dopravní prostředky

Yeah, it was Mikael at Nordic RC Visions that said I should have a go at making a bracket after I commented on his Rising Fighter series of videos, where he fitted the AMPRO brace! I haven't got this chassis but I found this very interesting to watch Mark. Finding ways to fix or mod things from bits around the home is my cuppa tea. Big respect to Alf (or head cam) for the extreme close ups as well : ))

ally and now, with the RF, a bonkers off road buggy. I'm going to increase the th021st ride height as per your video. I'm fact, I've saved your step by step yt?021st videos, so I can watch them alongside the build. It's given me more confidence to tackle the build solo. And the camera work is ace. Hey Lee! Well, I do like to get hands-on with my Tamiyas, love a bit of tinkering! Wow, you really have gone for it, with two cars at once. So now you will have the best of both worlds! Haha rcworxshop - I hope you are right, I used the bracket as it already had that 90 degree bend, and I didn't fancy trying to bend a 2mm steel plate in my flimsy bench vice! Yeah - I hope the vid shows that it is well worth having a go at modding their RC's - it's not too difficult if you have a few basic hand tools and a little patience - I've seen you do a few cool bespoke RC mods in your workshop too! Thanks for the compliment, HARRY RC! Got to be honest, it's not my idea, I have seen other ways to control the movement of the Rising Fighter and other similar Tamiya gearbox mounts - but yes, this is my own take on it, and I think it should work out OK - just need to test it now :-)
Such a great and practical video. Thank you. I made 5th shock mod on my Tamiya Unimog (CW-01), but your method is also very good. Also I was thinking about changing the shock to adjustable solid turnbuckle and just adjust the length of the turnbuckle so the mainshaft gets to the central position and that should work too, similarly as your brace. But on the other hand I love watching that transmission movement when driving, I even added weight ballast to CW-01 for it to lean more (and roll over more, which is not good). I just sit or squat a little to observe the amazing Tamiya from low angle :)
Thank you Mindau for the interesting comment! Yes, the 5th shock mod works very well - unfortunately there is not enough room to do this mod on the Rising Fighter! I have also seen the solid turnbuckle mod used to good effect - and it should be possible on the Rising Fighter too. But yes, it is funny to see the transmission movement, the joy of Tamiya! Great mod - I've noticed this issue with the Lunchbox when you hit full throttle, makes an awful noise too. Ace buggy for the price as well. Look forward to the running video..😉

Yeah, my friend has the Lunchie and we've seen a similar problem on that as it shares a lot of the suspension methods as the Rising fighter - maybe we could look at making a similar brace solution for the Lunchie too - will post a vid of that if we do. @@MarkBryanRC all done. Did a cross between your design and ampro. Used plexiglass instead of metal and i didnt cut into the transmission anymore

😊👍Nice! I use a fishing string mod it works the same way yours does but it also still allows the whole gearbox to push upward like stock so it still can absorb impacts from jumps. It's the best way I found that works best for the hopper chassis.

Very ingenious solution mate and nicely made. This is a problem on a whole load of Tamiyas and there are various mods that people have come up with. I've done the 5th shock mod on my Lunchbox which seems to work well because it does allow the gearbox to come up at the front but smoothly so it doesn't pull the back shocks down so much under acceleration as a fixed pivot point. There wasn't so much space on the Hornet so I've done a mod which achieves the same sort of pivot thing as yours but doesn't require any metalwork skills as mine are a bit limited :-) As with all these mods you need to work with what you've got lying around and your own skills. Anyway nice vid and well explained :-)

Yeah, there are lots of Tamiyas that employ the moving front gearbox mount - I think many people could fashion their own solutions with a bit of bent metal and some files! Thank you! After all, it was you that suggested I should have a go at making a bracket out of metal!! I decided to go for steel this time though, as I thought the bracket would be under more stress than the other alloy brackets I've made - but the steel is much harder to work with so I will continue with aluminium for the majority of my metalwork!
Oh yes - a real joy to dump those flimsy, good for nothing springs, it feels good to make an improvement on the Rising Fighter - and thank you so muck for the inspiration my friend! Have a smashing weekend :-)

I am wondering if it will actually improve handling though.
The old system at least helps in avoiding wheel spin because it allows the springs to absorb some of the initial torque. Which also means that the new mod would help in acceleration as long as the tyres are good and don't break traction.
I'd like to know what difference you've noticed when actually driving it. Thanks.

I must admit I never considered the transmission moving might absorb the initial shock of the wheels causing sudden traction, as you say, we need to check this out - I'm planning to do a side-by-side comparison in slo-mo with my car and a standard (unbraced) Rising Fighter. John Thimakis, I tried the car yesterday, and it does seem to be an improvement! Very difficult to be completely objective though... The "slap" has definitely disappeared, and if anything it seems to take off better than standard, with much less hopping at the rear, which helps to reduce the bump-steer. Anyway, hope to bring the video as soon as I can edit all the 55 minutes of footage down to about 4 minutes - it may take a while :-)

I thought it should take off better as long as the wheels don't break traction ie with bald tyres or really powerful motor.

Hi john - I think you all know Pete Wylie - a fantastic member of our RC community - Sorry to say that he has had some awful bad luck - whilst charging a LiPo in his hobby room, it set on fire and has demolished his RC collection and nearly burnt down his house! It really isn’t tamiya at their best with this design flaw I recently got a second hand one and am trying to work out how the springs are meant to be set up ???
Hiya, Cat! Yeah, this is a cheap buggy and it shows! But good fun bouncing around all over the place. The shocks are almost impossible to set up to reduce the bouncing due to the design of the buggy - as soft as possible is the best option, I find! Have fun! :)
