    As a retired track coach I have 2 observations:
    1. This meet always ended with the men’s 4x400 relay because it was considered the most exciting and had the most talented athletes. This year that all changed when they flip flopped this and put the women last. The tumblers clicked into a new position that adds extra emphasis to Title IX.
    2. For the coaches to have put Abby Steiner on both relays, and to place her on the critical “Alyson Felix” leg in this 4x400 relay shows how much they think of her. The USA does not play when it comes to the relays at World’s and the Olympics. The trust placed in Abby, who had already done 56 races this season, is astounding. Some will question this decision, but it must be understood that her coaches know things about each athlete that the rest of us don’t. And, they were correct in their assessments, that’s for sure!

    • @brutusbarnabus8098
      @brutusbarnabus8098 Před rokem +8

      She was a last minute addition like she was for the 4x100. It was reported that Dalilah Muhammad suffered an injury during warmups and had to withdraw from the event. It does still show the confidence that the coaches had in her as you pointed out.

    • @distanceman8147

      @rickiovine2170 Před rokem +15

      @@brutusbarnabus8098: A good point, but I am certain that the coaches preferred Abby. You don’t put a last minute replacement on the 2nd leg of the 4x400. That’s why Alyson Felix was always there. You MUST have the rail when the runners break. You cannot afford having your 2nd leg using up energy fighting for the pull position because she will end up making a mess out of things. She has to have that inside rail all to herself to assure the seamless exchange that you only get if you own the very inside exchange position. Our 3rd leg always looks as if they were shot out of a canon because they always get the baton in great position. That is exactly what Abby gave them.
      The 4x100 was a bit different because they did plan on Aleia Hobbs, but COVID ended her meet. Why they went with Abby only the coaches would know, but I sense it was a no-brainer. Even so, at that time it was a bit of a gamble. Abby was tired and hadn’t done very many 4x100’s. But, she ran as brilliantly as they expected and now they wanted her in the 4x400! I don’t think that the great Muhammad had a sub-50 left in her, and they needed a sub-50. They were right because a 50.4, or higher and the Jamaican goes right by. You saw how hard Abby worked to hold her line.

    • @rickiovine2170
      @rickiovine2170 Před rokem +1

      @@distanceman8147: A good observation, and one that I agree with. The relay coaches went with Abby over Muhammad because they saw that she was going flat, which would have been a disaster in that relay.

      Stop with this tired leg stuff. In the 1988 Olympics Flow Jo ran 3 rounds each for the 100 and 200. And then anchored the 4 x 4 to set the American record. Everyone is tired at the Olympics and World Championships. It goes with the territory.

Wilson, Stiener and Diggs did. We're talking 40+ races each. So tired legs do play a factor when you're talking about seconds. McLaughlin was the freshest of the bunch. Perhaps they ( interviewers ) are tying to get them to explain the epps and flows aka agony of defeat and the sweetness of victory...To compare the emotional roller coaster of it all.. You know some athletes ( in different sports as well ) will say that certain victories is more sweeter than others, or certain defeats lingers longer than others...But I understand what you're saying...

    honestly winning gold medal in relay for USA is the easiest thing for the athletes due to the high level of their teammates. Abby steiner if she truly wants to be a world star athlete she is going to have to win gold in individual races. She went to this world championship for the 200m and she could not get below 22 seconds in three races, two for classification and in the final, for me her participation was disappointing

    • @Mark-xl1ze

      Is it just one individual in each distance that's a "world star athlete"?
      I think Abby will be at least a contender for individual medals from 100 m to 400 m, but a key runner for the relays, she LOVES relays. Last year she was injured, this year was actually fantastic (maybe except for no indivual medal at Worlds), next year will be very, very interesting...
      With teammates like Sydney, Mu and other young talents in 4x400 the WR shouldn't last very long.

      So we have two posters who have the ability to look into their TV set, over the transmission signals to a broadcast center at NBC and then into the camera at the scene. Then they go into the eyeballs of four people they don't know and get into their brains and find the right neurons and shrink to interpret those tendrils of emotions and analyze the hormones going on at that time on the right tendrils of the right neurons.
      And then lucky for us, they tell us with certainty what they saw.
      That is some powerful self delusion and self assigned magical thinking.
