  • Jamaican Women have dominated the sprints at the Olympic Games having won 10 medals, including all 4 gold medals, since Beijing 2008. But the big 3 names of Shericka Jackson, Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shell-Ann Fraser-Pryce have had slightly slower starts to their seasons than in previous years. Bringing about concerns around their potential to return to the podium once again.

    To me, what seems to be happening with the sprints particularly, but also some of the other events is the athletes have seen the crazy improvements that everybody has been making over the past few seasons and they know that Olympic year usually brings out even better performances and they feel under a lot of pressure to get the absolute best out of themselves. As a result, they are staying in very heavy training cycles further into the season than they usually would in the hope that they can see the benefits at the Olympics. If that is accurate then the few races that some have competed in, they wouldn't have expected to be fast, they won't be race sharp and their bodies will be tired from the training. I assume they have only competed to get some idea of how soon they need to transition away from the heavier training. My only concern is if any athlete doesn't give themselves enough time to get properly race ready before their respective nationals, although obviously that's more of an issue for US athletes based on their selection process.
    I think it makes complete sense that the athletes that are running fast are the school/college athletes, who won't have this Olympic training mentality and people like Letsile, Noah and Sydney. In the case of Noah and Sydney, they won't be as concerned about their ability to perform at a high enough standard, because Sydney is unbeaten in the 400mH for years and Noah is unbeaten in the 200m for years and has seen evidence of the weakest part of his race improving during the indoor season. I think where Letsile is concerned, he is just more relaxed about the whole process and doesn't expect too much of himself. It is a great advantage in some ways that he so young and this is his first Olympics and it seems like he has no expectations and is looking forward to the experience more than the results. That's not to say he wouldn't want to win, just that he will be putting less pressure on himself.

    This might be subjective, but Shericka looked to me above her normal, competitive weight in the Marrakesh Diamond League. If this is indeed the case, it might be very significant, as loosing weight is best done much earlier in the season, since caloric deficit during the season itself increases the risk of tendons and ligament injuries (and guys, please note that I'm not bashing the lovely Shericka for her looks, but simply discussing an ultra important aspect of competitive track and field, i. e., an athlete's optimal weight).

    • @kc5466
      @kc5466 Před měsícem +4

      That’s the thing. People say it’s all part of the plan by the process of “loading.”
      What people don’t realize with this process of loading is that at shericka’s current size, to lose the weight from loading it will take extra work than it normally would in other seasons when she was not loading.
      With the extra training to peak in time for the Olympics, comes with added risks when you have to drastically reduce your caloric intake while increasing your training regiment.
      If done with no issues loading is great. But sometimes the risks outweigh the benefits.
      And it seems Shacarri is doing the same loading process. It would be her first time doing this and to me that is a risk that should be reserved for a year that isn’t an Olympic year. But if it works she and her coach will be looking like a genius.

    • @Meechooilka
      @Meechooilka Před měsícem +4

Shelly Ann is getting up there in age as this should be her last Olympics but you can't count her out because she is who she is, the best woman sprinter in the modern era. Edit: After seeing the way Sha'carri just dominated Elaine Thompson Herah in the 100m at the Pre-Classic in Eugene on May 25, I no longer have the Jamaicans as favorites. With the 100 out of reach for Team Jamaica, I'm not sure that they'll win gold this Olympics at any athletics event. Their best chance is the 200 but with Sydney McClaughlin's run at the event, I still favor the Americans over the Jamaicans.
    Depending on what kind of day US sprinter Sha'carri is having, the 100 is no longer a guarantee for the Jamaicans but I still have them as the favorites. The 200 is far from guaranteed with the times that Sydney McClaughlin is putting up. Also, the American women are favored in the relays so Paris may be the toughest Olympics yet for Team Jamaica as the US women have an overall stronger team. That and the fact that the Jamaican team is getting old and these things inevitably happen. Right now the momentum has shifted to the Americans but may shift back to the Jamaicans in the near future. The Jamaican men, however, are no longer competitive so the burden in Paris will be on the women,

They are the favorites for the 100m and 200m and the relay ALONG with the sprinters from the USA. The reason why i mentioned the younger girls is people saying that the Big 3 is ALL that's left from Jamaica and there's no talent after them but there most certainly is. For the men - the Junior 400m sprinters from Jamaica are absolute FIRE. I'm more excited for them than the 100m male sprinters.

    Shericka's consistency alongside her improvements suggest to me she can improve once again in her 100m & 200m, especially getting closer to the WR times of Florence Griffith Joyner. The only thing that can prevent that if it's the weather or injuries.
    Elaine & Shelly's route on the podium will be dependent on their health and hitting peak form. This Olympic season is completely different from 2016 & 2021, especially with how people are running currently rn, and with the likes of Julen, Sha'carri, Gabby, Dina, Daryll, Marie Josee and others in the mix, it will not be as easy for those 3 Jamaican women to all be on the podium.

      @scottdave7006 Your statement did not age well @ all in the last 48hrs❗️ Stop with the 🧢 ..specifically the “we don’t question our sprinters” ..JA’s own Mav has over 48k views with plenty of questions sprinkled in. 👀Slide over there with this rudeness. The Final Leg gave a fair & unbiased assessment.

    This is the most bias and nefarious analysis I've ever heard....''Mr Commentator's breakdown is somewhat illogical and lacking in merit. Let's see how Paris 100m women unfolds because the one who crosses the finish line first will be the champion...albeit the favorite.
