I remember reading about this match that Monica made 53 unforced errors, that’s probably that largest amount she’s ever made , more like today’s ladies players stats 😂.I think Monica has just over played in the warm up events maybe and just was a bit burnt out here , looks like Daja served well and was giving Monica some awkward shots bit like Hingis did to her but still on any other day Monica would have won but oh well these things happen . Thanks for the highlights was fun to watch
Seles looked flat in this match but Bedanova played well. She had a good serve and she also seemed to have had nice variety in her game. From what I recall, there was a good amount of hype around her at that time. But she looked less impressive in 2002 and even worse in 2003 before she faded due to injuries. I also read that she allegedly had an eating disorder as well.
yeah you could see the improved fitness here and shades of the old Monica but she was flat here and the service did not look here... | watched this live on TV and recall the broadcasters being a bit surprised her form was so off given her summer results
A really disappointing result even if Daja played very well here, for Monica had just had a wonderful summer, beating the likes of Martina (twice), Jennifer, Serena and Justine! All the more disappointing knowing Daja only managed 2 games against Martina in the next round, only reached once round 4 of a Grand Slam after that and stopped her career 4 years later due to injury 😢
Bedanova defeated 12th seeded Meghann Shaughnessy in the previous round so definitely not a fluke. Not taking away from Bedanova but Monica seemed sluggish here.

I had never seen Bedanova before. I remember the score and my disappointment because Monica had had a very good summer.

This is true. 53 unforced errors - mostly in the situations she needed to win. Her backhand failed her this time.
She practiced with Daja before the Open as well. She probably felt a little more confident facing Seles than most.
