      But a 34/37 years old Martina beat peak Seles 7 times from 1990 -1993 including 5 times when Seles was ranked #1. Infact even before stabbing peak Seles lost to 37 years old Martina in Chicago. But even a better version of Martina only beat Steffi twice from 1988 till 1994. So Graf fared better than Martina than Seles. BTW how Martina herself faired against old guards like Court, BJK & Wade ?? Not as much as impressive as I thought.

    99 was one of those tough years like 96-97 for monica where her movement was just not there yet...in 2001-2003 she moved better and had better results... | always felt if she played 98defnece like she did before hamburg it would have been enough against Lindsay and martina Hingis to rack up more wins... you can really see it in this match and in 99 overall the difference to how she moved as a teenager but still great highkights of two legends of the sport and two of the nicest people in tennis

    As a South African and the bigfest Graf fan, i hated when these two layed each other. Steffi for some reason struggled again Coetzer because Amanda was so quick and ran down so many balls. Coetzer later started working with Seles' old coach, became alittle more aggressive and got into the best shape of her life in 1997. Hence the 3 wins over Steffi and her world ranking peaking at number 3.

  • @snifferdogxsnifferdogx5977

    Graf played really well but Martina was not moving well that day. She had lower back pain that day and you can see how gingerly she is running to the ball and putting her hand on her back.

  • @stef1074
    @stef1074 Před 5 dny

    So steady is Steffi. You can count on one hand female players with bad days at the office. 1. Evert 2. Graf 3. Seles 4. Navratilova 96 was a very good year for Steffi as she won the 3 GS in which she took part. And she was knee injured with a dad in jail. That is what I call resilience... 97 would be an other story but her knee injury went worse and worse. Sad because she was the only one in the circuit to challenge Hingis.

      she beat her in 1995 too and pushed her close in some other matches that year. She was a bit like Arantxa in that she could drive Graf crazy with all the balls she could get back leading Steffi to make an error. However if Graf was playing well it would be no contest.

      The Italian girls almost always have great spirit and attitudes, as well as fight. Golarsi who nearly upset Evert in her last ever Wimbledon in 89, Ferrando who beat Seles at the 90 US Open in a huge early round upset, Reggi who was an entertaining and feisty competitor on tour in the 88-90 period especialy that was her peak, and of course Schiavone and Pennetta who both became big surprise slam champions in their 30s. They are rarely ever up with the very top level talent wise, but they always fight hard, have great spirits, and very entertaining.

    Steffi’s backhand stroke started to change here in aussie open 90 after her skiing thumb injury i think. She started hitting her backhand very close to her body, the stroke was not as deep or knifing as it was, she also almost stopped hitting top spin backhand altogether during baseline rally… Steffi didnt fix her backhand for a couple season and let it became somewhat of a punching bag for a few of top players. Its very apparent here in this match of that sliced backhand side just sat up instead of penetrating deep
