  • When Maria Sharapova defeated Serena Williams to win Wimbledon at just 17-years-old, the sports world prepared for a long and competitive rivalry between the two women. But as the rivalry became lopsided, the media painted a different picture of Serena and Maria. A feud emerged in 2013, and the two women became enemies.

How she also accused Serena of gamesmanship in her book, such as falling over on the court on purpose? The fact that you mentioned nothing of the racism that led to Maria being better treated and courted by the tennis media and corporations than a person who accomplished more than four times what she did on court, nor of the fact that Maria herself bought into said racist tropes and beliefs about Serena is unsurprising and unfortunately means you DID rewrite history by wilfully ignoring a huge chunk of the context behind the story.

I don’t like this narrative that only Serena is super ‘competitive’ and doesn’t like ‘losing’. Every athlete at this level has this type of mentality. People don’t understand how Serena Williams fought her way through a very elite, white sports world, as a black woman. She needed to scream and shout to be taken seriously, even after winning many Grand Slams. She won and stood on the court giving it her all, even with major injuries, while dealing with grief and depression. She is not just a regular force in her own right. She is one of the best tennis players that ever existed. Still to this day, people don’t give her the same amount of respect and recognition she deserves! I like Maria Sharapova, and she is also an amazing tennis player, but the legacy that Serena Williams, and her sister, left is on another level. She paved the way for a lot of top-tier athletes we know today. People need to put some respect on her name and stop labeling her as a villain. It’s racist and disgusting.

Even though Serena was the greatest player, they wouldn’t give her the respect she earned. I mean even Mary C said after Serena crushed Maria “Maria is still the better player…” like seriously. They were very few commentators who were fair about Serena -John McEnroe being one of them. Serena and Venus elevated the sport but were pushed behind for Maria who is a cheater. It was obvious then and it’s obvious now. But in tennis ability Serena had the best game. Maria had one game-hit the ball hard and if that isn’t working…hit it harder. Sharapova's branding and marketing helped her - especially her dressing like Zendaya today. Her kits were fitted to suit her pear shape with an appropriate length to her shorts, the colors that matched. Even when she won Wimbledon she had a timeless look. She didt take too risks much and just stuck with i which some found boring. Serena too a long while to find her style, a lot of her outfits and wigs havent aged well as they didnt suit her body type, face, skin tone. It was around 2012, when she started dressing great - the us Open outfit was a cut hat suited her body. Brighter with colors to contrasted her skin tone very well. Branding is a powerful thing.

Maria got so much publicity BECAUSE she beat Serena.
Also, it was 2004, and EVERYONE who wasn't Black or a diehard Serena fan wanted to see Serena fail in a big way.
Tennis is (still) a pretty racist sport (and please look up what "racism" actually is before you come for me. It doesn't mean, "I hate these color of people"). The women have always been more progressive when it came to race and sexuality, but on the men's side, it's still very much a ("straight") White man's club. It's changing, with the influx of Asian talent, but still, very monolithic.
I pay close attention to who is in the support boxes of the male players, and the players of color usually have mixed boxes, but the White players are almost always all-White. Not to mention that they almost always have White girlfriends.
So, what does this have to do with Serena and Maria?
Because Serena challenged the perception of what a successful tennis player looked like, and by beating Serena on the biggest stage, Maria restored it.
