This is my single favorite Serena match. All these years later, I remember this one. The troubling 2004-2006, her ranking, everyone writing her off, the backstory, coming into the tournament out of shape, working her way through and nearly getting bounced, and THEN..... this absolutely brilliant display of perfection. The whole story makes me so happy.

Oh Yes, I remember this match and screamed happily all the way through it. The press and announcers were calling Serena "fat and out of shape" when she arrived in Australia. They also thought that Maria Sharapova was the next BIG thing in tennis. She had beaten Serena at Wimbledon and they knew that was the way it was going to be from now on. Their bias could be heard in every match - especially by the women, Mary Carillo for example. The male announcers were not so much against her( I loved Dick Enberg - McEnroe wasn't bad either in terms of fairness.)The tennis world did not like Venus nor Serena very much. They loved Capriati, Hingis, Davenport, Clisters and the rest. I am glad she has proven them all wrong and my fervent wish is for her to win another major and retire on top.

I think that this is one of the most powerful displays of tennis that I have ever seen. This was even more comprehensive to me than the 2012 Olympics, because this Sharapova at her "best" so Serena dismantled the "good version' of Maria and not the slower one that we see now.

When I consider how people were saying that Serena is deluded and a lost cause at that time, I just find it amazing how some humans have the audacity to draw conclusions about other people going from mere facts. Serena was still 25 and was being already written off. At the end of the day she proved her naysayers wrong majestically. I would therefore say that one should never write another person off, for we never know what might happen in the next hour or day or week etc.

This match really showed how great Serena is, she struggled and fought her way through the tournament, and in this match she utterly destroyed Sharapova who was supposedly the best at the time. Serena always sets herself apart with her tennis, there is none like her on the women's circuit especially when speaking from a mental perspective.

Meldonium was a recent banned drug back at that time, it was banned only for a few months and Sharapova was taking the drug for almost a decade. Do you even know what the drug is for?
Do some research! No necessarily people use these drugs for enhancing their athletic aptitudes. People do have issues regarding their health especially athletes in these type of sports where their ligaments, nerves, muscles, etc...can get so easily affected.
Maybe should get something that a doctor can prescribe instead of doing in secrecy and was taken for 10yrs damn what did she have that couldn't heal in 10yrs shit some cancer go in remission for that long before coming back that's even if it does.

That's because women's serves are significantly slower than men's serve! Try hitting a winner off a 200+ kph serve, not easy!
Your best option is to just slice return and keep the ball low as possible.
Serena excels at punishing bad serves. She stands very close inside the base line, which stresses the opponent.

This match was the beginning of the end for Sharapova because from this match on she knew Serena owned her. Serena became stronger and better and I'm sure psychologically this match dented Sharapova's overall confidence. Deep down she knew she would never be able to beat Serena and would only win majors if Serena lost in earlier rounds.
This is by far one of my favorite matches from Serena! I just came here to see this for the millionth time before the first round match between these too tonight!! #US open 2019

To be fair to the Serena doubters, perhaps some of the commentators are not aware that not only had it been 2 years since Serena had won a slam, at that point, it had been 2 years since she had won a tournament of any kind. I never gave up on her in that time, always felt she was the best and would get back to it, but she really was at her lowest point when she arrived in Australia that year - she had even lost early in a tune-up. And she really did arrive in kind of dubious looking physical shape - she truly DID play herself into shape with all her 3 set matches and got better and better over the 2 weeks. She actually came of age this event and roared back to life because it had been a pretty dark 2 years for her.
That is Serena at her best. When she plays like this no one can beat her. Wonderful match.
