    Fabio Fognini is one of the most creative talents in tennis I have ever watched. He demonstrates the raw power one can get when one is still and balanced, with no energy going in the wrong directions, all energy going to his hand and then the racket. I don't judge him by grand slams but his sheer ability to hit the ball, and his pretty funny personality. He is on my list of favorite players of all time. Tennis would be so much greater if every player would trust and find their own style, and live and die by it as it looks like Fognini has done. Bravo Fabio.

    Montanes should have taken better advantage of the situation and probably against a higher ranked player Fognini would not have stood a chance, but you have to give Fognini some credit. He's got a rare ability to generate pace that he uses to good effect even when he's fully fit - here he made absolutely the right decision to just swing freely and apart from a couple of lucky net cords his winners were not accidental, they were the result of great talent and intention.

    Fognini screwed Djokovic's record of 41 wins in a row that year( Tipsarevic also gave Novak a WO in Belgrade earlier); also the QF W/O after this match gave Djokovic almost five days gap between his 4 th round and the SF versus Federer , who benefited, and won, just to lose to Rafa who was owned by Djokovic that year! Will never forget this match, was rooting for Montanes!

    Can you be closer than that to win a match ? The kind of match that can break a career for the loser.
    Anyway we can see what a truly talented player can do, which is unleash effortless powerful shots using almost only his arm, barely any footwork... and there's nothing you can do about it. nothing! The opponent gets crushed without really understanding why a man barely standing on his feet can send him bombs over and over again.
    This is more or less the same thing he did to Nadal at the US open where he was going for his shots and there was noting Nadal could do about it.
    It's difficult to understand why suddenly after 4 hours of a match the guy transforms into super saiyan and becomes untouchable... not a lot of players can do that.
    That also makes me think about Djokovic vs federer at the us open saving 2 match points on Fed's serve while he seemed mentally already out of it.

    • @talastra
      @talastra Před měsícem

      If anyone is going to beat you using only their arms and not moving, it's definitely Fognini. At least on his forehand, you can see the whip he's building up. But on the backhand, somehow *bang* the angle is completely redirected and the ball is going 100mph. It's really very WTF. And amazing to watch.

    Montanes made serious mistakes. Ex the point after Fognini s serve that was so many metres out on the left side though serve wasnt difficult at all he could even try a dropshot not a high risk powerful ending. A dropshot would be more difficult for Fognini to deal. Its his mistakes not Fognini s good tenis.
