  • For those of you who record with one of the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders, good news: You can now use a variety of MIDI controllers as a control surface with your MixPre. This will make it easier for you to make a quality stereo mix while still recording your isolated microphone channels. This is especially helpful when recording interviews, panel discussions, or lectures. Let’s give you a quick overview!

    I can confirm that you can use the Wingman app on Android simultaneously with a control surface in the USB-A port.
    also I got my mind blown on set after updating my MixPre-10T to v3.00. my school has the Korg nanoKontrol2s and I was totally not expecting it to be recognized by the MixPre but when it did my boom operator and I were freaking out. I'm definitely going to be investing in the LaunchControl XL for sit-down mixing gigs! thanks for the super informative video as usual. shout-out to Emma for nerding out about drum corps. marching band was a good time.

    Thanks for such a thoughtful and descriptive video. Quick clarification: in film production, we use a mono dialogue mix as part of our dailies. Field mixers combine the boom mic(s) and isolated vocals (typically lavaliers) into one mono mix. In editorial, we rely heavily on the field mixer to give us a strong mix for each take. This takes an enormous amount of craft and skill, but a good production mixer is worth their weight in gold.

    Wow, this is a great firmware update an control option! I really enjoy my MixPre6 but the cramped knobs are a hassle for live mixing. Thanks so much for this video, Curtis.

    Upgraded my mixpre-6, went to a music store, got to try out Akai Midi Mix in the the store, the sales guy (Rock musician) was as fascinated as I was. One slider controlled the stereo out level, very sweet. Device lightweight and sturdy plastic. Purchase was a given. Not something I will bring to many shots (one more thing to bring along), but very nice and useful when applicable, for example then managing a conference with multiple audio in.

    Hey Curtis would LOVE to see a video on your favorite options for 8series since I just got my 833. Looking at the ssl model but the best would be something like a CL 8 if it exhausted haha. Motorized faders would also be nice.

    The features are fairly similar of the different controllers, with a few exceptions. I think what sways me to the Launch Control XL is the USB connection on the side. Great job Emma! I am the sound designer for Santa Clara Vanguard. Hope to see you out there again this summer.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd Před 5 lety

      Thanks Lloyd and good to hear from you. Yes, having the USB connection on the side works better in depth constrained situations like carts as you know all too well in drum corps. By the way, congrats on an amazing season in 2018! Amazing job by you and the rest of the SCV! Emma is marching with SCVC this year.
      If you're interested, I'd love to have a conversation with you some time about the experience of being a sound designer for live performances like drum corps?

      @LloydPuckitt Před 5 lety

      Wow! What a small world. Congratulations Emma! I think you are going to have a great time. There are some great people involved with SCVC. I’ll try to say hi at some point this summer.

    Thanks Curtis, for the as always informative and educational video.
    On a slightly different topic: the 3..02 firmware is also targeting the ambisonic recording. Do you plan to have some episodes on that? Ambisonic recording seems to offer a number of possibilities, but I struggle to find proper information on concepts and how-to.
    Thanks again

    Hi Curtis, thanks for one more excellent video. I see it's from 2018 and assume it all works with current MixPre10II. But did you test any USB hub (with current 10 II) ? I'd like to know about simple and small hubs to connect both a controller and a pendrive for backup and be sure it will work safely

    First of all, Season's Greetings to you; Curtis.
    A Big Thank You to you, for having posted this. Being an user of a Mixpre 6, I did have an inclination towards the Mixpre 10T as well. But for the lack of any control interface for it! The Mixpre 10 T certainly doesn't seem to suit mixing on the fly!
    Zoom seemed to have beaten Sound Devices on this score! Now they seem to be running even!
    So....will Sound Devices now offer an upgrade incorporating MixAssist as well?
    Or am I just day-dreaming....😊
    Anyway, the 10T comes back into my wishlist again!

    • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions
      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Pradeep and seasons greetings to you! I haven’t heard anything from Sound Devices regarding an auto mix feature on the MixPre series, but perhaps some day!
      As a note: I would not make automix a deciding factor to purchase the Zoom F8. It’s automix is a decent start but not yet practically useful in my tests. It does not fade inactive mics enough to make a substantially better mix. I think they can fix address this in a firmware update but that is just a guess.

    Very informative indeed Curtis, thx u! Will I get better results in terms of sound quality with this combo (Mixpre 10 & Novation LaunchControl XL) instead of a PreSonus StudioLive 16.0.2 USB Digital Mixer for live streaming with Blackmagic ATEM 4k video switcher? Only 4 live mics!

    • @curtisjudd

    Hi Curtis! It seems like both Zoom F8 and SD Mixpre are using some king of MIDI protocol to comunicate with such controllers. What do you think would happen if we plugged one of this devices to Zoom F8? Have you ever try it? I still thing FRC-8 is way to expensive for what it is doing. I was wondering if you could replace it with a device like you've just reviewed.
