It's because of the obvious. It was the taking of white bodies by black ghosts. That's the reason it's underrated.
See that's what I hate about these kind of people, why do you have to mess up if a door doesn't open in a house. I mean there's a reason why it doesn't open but no, you think you're sherlock Holmes and got to solve this mystery or the world will end😑😑😑😑

watched this film over and over and over, it's sooooo scary and soooo brilliant! i don't know why more people don't know about it or talk about it. gotta be one of the best, most spine-tingling, horrific twists i've ever seen in a film.

As a lover of psychological horrors that rarely gets spooked by ANY horror....this one fucked me up when I first saw it in my early teens and it's been plastered in my memory ever since. This is probably the only horror that comes to mind that I can say is legitimately scary - and not in the typical suspense/jump scare sense. This trailer does it no justice - just watch it.
I agree 100% it’s actually one of the best movies I’ve seen if anyone told me there was ghosts in there house I would LEAVE … I wasn’t expecting the ending at all

My parents put this on for family movie night when I was like 6... I couldn’t be alone for 3 years after. I was always asking my mom if she was gonna sow my eye and mouth shut like they do in the movie 😂😂😂
no way i'd let my child anywhere near anything even remotely like this! young brains are not developed or equipped to witness such things and it can cause lasting damage. can't imagine why any parent would let a young child watch anything like this. an adult may be able to watch it and brush it off, but a child cannot. don't expose children to this kind of thing. it matters more than we realise. protect them. the world and our emotions are hard enough to navigate without making it harder before we even reach adulthood.
I drove past This mansion in the film on my way to Oak Valley Plantation. What a gorgeous estate both of them.
I just rewatched this movie the other day. Totally forgot about the twist ending. Underrated Horror film. Plus, young Kate Hudson so Beautiful in this film. Lol

I made it a habit to watch the trailer after watching the movie. Now days trailers are spoilers. It's a great movie we want never ending continuum.
This is an excellent voodoo supernatural horror movie, with a very creepy twist at the end of the movie!

Is it just me or one of the reasons why I didn’t really thought that Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’ was original is because it reminded me so much of this movie?

It is original, very much so. One is about voodoo in New Orleans the other is about auctioning poc off to white people and is a satire/commentary on how one feels when they’re the only poc with a bunch of white people. Some tone and plot similarities doesn’t make it unoriginal
Skeleton Key is a master piece..and tragic. I will get Susan Harris..I am not the bad guy but I will make sure a hook connects if she comes for me and she is not within my bloodline...corrupt employer.
Get Out would never have been conceived without this movie..it's all about remakes of remakes of remakes nowadays. I wouldn't doubt if this movie got into him subconsciously while he was writing it...and i would hope though i haven't yet heard him name drop Skeleton Key in any interviews..perhaps he was distracted by all the fanning at the time....The main message within Get Out though has been around long before Jordan Peele was born..though congrats to his success and hard work

I swear this movie scared the living hell out of me when I was a teen. It left me in disappoinment when it came to a not-so-good ending. Still this film was one of the reason why magic and sorcery fascinates me a lot.
I finally understand this movie, and that is when it became terrifying.
A masterpiece. However, WHERE is part 2? So sad leaving this unsolved.
How is it unsolved? The ending is perfect closure in that we learned that the two servants just keep jumping in and out of bodies over time, and they'll keep doing that.
Had serious nightmares after watching this movie, I've felt of touch with my own body for a while so watching this really creeped me out. Could cry for those poor people trapped in those bodies, their own life stolen.

I don't know why I didn't find this movie earlier. One of the best Horror movie I watched! The end of the movie amazed me! I didn't expect that!
idk if it’s just a coincidence but the scene where Caroline wakes up in the night and her mouth and both eyes are sewed shut IMMEDIATELY reminded me of the doll from Coraline! Especially since the Coraline doll that the other mother made has the mouth and both eyes sewed shut.
Most likely just a coincidence but I thought it was a cool parallel. Both main characters have similar names and share similar experiences/fates.
EDIT: Ok i just finished the movie and realized both movies share a secret/trap door. And both woman (evil) basically want your soul.

Usually I avoid watching any horror movie... because I am scared... If ever I have seen any horror movie it is always with my siblings or friends... But I saw The Skeleton key alone That too when I was alone at home... I was feeling scared but still I watched the whole movie... Despite being horror, I liked this movie very much...
This movie scared me so much as a teen I can never watch it again though I want to 😆

Something about New Orleans, swamps, plantations, voodoo, Black People in America and colonial times always really interested me. Marie Laveau, Dr. Facilier ''The Shadow Man''. I do have a little African blood as well as French so perhaps the combination because many black folks used to speak French because of French-Spanish colonial era. It just has that mysterious and magical vibe. I love it. I wish they would make more movies about those days. About what people went through and the strange stories of African black magic. The show ''Them'' was really refreshing and has certain elements in it that taste like it. Might wanna watch it :)
@ Sliver17S I've always felt New Orleans and the whole of Louisiana was extremely mystical. My people are from Louisiana northern and southern part and YES we secretly practice, what some may call, "voodoo". We are a black family and have been there since the early 1800's maybe mid 1700's. I was tested for dna a few years ago and was not surprised to find French and English dna in my dna maker. This movie was filmed in Terrebonne Louisiana not far from New Orleans. I am now finding that my French/ English ancestors resided in Terrebonne Louisiana.
Louisiana is the most diverse regarding culture and once again...mystical, out of all southern states. It's a whole vibe you FEEL nowhere in the other states of America. ;)
But stay away from black magic.
One of the best horror movies I've ever seen with a truly shocking ending. The Sixth Sense has nothing on this.

I like the horror movies that are not completely horror based and scary. I have a mysterious storyline, and that are pleasantly suspenseful like this movie is. I like the storyline and the characters to. That’s what makes us better than some of those other horror movies.

It would just be more of the same ... Justify and Cecile using other peoples' bodies and then "recruiting" newer ones. Once the big reveal is shown then all the mystery is done.
