What a beautiful story, her a muse, come to inspire the artist. So magical. Which by the way, magic is my favorite song by her. I'd play it sometimes while cruising with friends. Hey it's the 77 year old grandma, well since I graduated high school in June 1961, I was around for the time setting of this movie. There was a very strict dress code Girls could not wear long pants of any kind to school, only dresses or skirts. Boys had to wear slacks to school no jeans. Only the bad boys lol wore jeans, and there were no girls jeans, if we wanted to wear jeans we had to by boys jeans. can't remember when the fashion world decided to make girls jeans. But we were glad when they did. The movie stayed pretty close to how things were in those days. But the movie that really shows the life style of older teens and young adults in that era is American Graffiti. I remember driving the strip every week end I lived in California so our strip was East 14th street and it stretched from Oakland California, all the way to Hayward California. Wow do I have some awesome memories of those days.

Ok, the white socks and black shoes question, here is what "I" think. The movie is set in the fifties, I was born in '57 so I ask my Dad (he was 27 yrs old) he said he didn't wear sandals or shorts, most men didn't. That was the cultural norm for that time and place. He made 90 yrs old recently. Love him so much ❤️💙. I could go on but my mind has shifted away from the song to memories of the Special relationship between me and my Dad. I'm so thankful

I remember when this movie was first released, I was 11 yrs old. My older cousin & I took the bus to the theater for the first showing that day. We watched it 3 times in a row before we ran out of money for any more tickets. Plus we had to catch the bus to be back home in time for dinner. :-) My oldest daughter's first experience watching this classic movie was on VHS tape. For the movie's 20th anniversary re-release, I took her to the theater. She happened to be 11 yrs old, just like my 1st theater experience. 2018 marked the 40th anniversary & again we went to the theater, this time with my youngest daughter. She was just a bit past her 12th b-day when she saw it (close enough). I didn't plan that at all, it just happened to work out that way. :-)

My mom and dad LOVED this movie, especially since they both said it was proper legit the way they grew up. Mom was more straight-laced, and Dad was a literal greaser, like John Travolta portrayed in this movie. He stood on street corners with his friends and sang do-wop. You've got to see this movie ... it's a great view at what the '50s was really like (at least the '50s in New York/New Jersey where they were).

That bass riff by David Hungate of TOTO (yes, that Toto) is iconic. The most important line in this song (and the whole movie) is, "You better shape-up 'cuz you better prove that my faith is justified." She changes for HIM with the expectation that he ALSO changes from who HE is, that he is more emotionally expressive and respectful to her because she NEEDS that and throughout the movie he's been completely lacking to "look cool". They both needed to change to be together, and here, she makes the first, bold step. Love here is conditional.
They come together again in the next movie "Two of a Kind" with the song Twist of Fate.

Your comment: "This movie is so iconic, so good..." - I totally agree! My mother was an actress/director, so I saw a LOT of musical & regular theatre. When the movie version came out my junior year of HS (1978) and my speech teacher asked me what my favorite 1970's movie was, I replied "Grease". He gave me shit about it being derivative - I was just speechless at his ignorance. I think it's obvious I won that argument in the long run.

Olivia Newton John was one of my favorites long before she starred in Grease. She has such a melodic ethereal voice. she's had a long career, starting in the country music genre before crossing over to pop. She's had chart topping hits from the early 70's on. To give ya an idea how big of a star she was, her FIRST greatest hits album came out in 1978... SEVENTY EIGHT! The same year this song & movie came out, which launched her into super stardom. I know you know or have at least heard some of her songs before. Her earliest hits, before Grease include: Let Me Be There, If You Love Me, Please Mr. Please, I Honestly Love You, Have You Ever Been Mellow... Seriously, this list goes on & on - it's definitely another rabbit hole for you to explore because there are just so many great songs. :-)

Alpha Omega .... As an Aussie myself, I can certainly vouch for pretty much ANY video or performance of John’s & his original video for “You’re the Voice” is a classic & it’s even better live. When he “cuts” the band & gets the audience to sing along to the chorus, it can literally send chills down your spine. When the bagpipes play, it’s “something else” altogether. Bagpipes don’t often work in pop music but “You’re the Voice” & of course the AC/DC classic “It’s a long way to the top (if ya wanna rock & roll” are 2 VERY noticeable exceptions to that theory ✊️😎👍 That whole firefight Australia concert earlier this year was brilliant but unfortunately I couldn’t go because I couldn’t get a ticket (😱😱😱) & even worse.... I had to work that day (😖😖😖). The performance of Adam Lambert & Queen was outstanding ✅✅✅

She's one of the most legit female pop stars of all-time. Part of the reason Producers Allan Carr and Robert Stigwood wanted her so badly for Grease was because of the gravitas her pop star status would give the film, whose cast was made up of a couple actors who could sing decently (Travolta and Conaway), and the rest with no singing or dancing experience. I think Stockard Channing was probably a pleasant surprise from a vocal standpoint, but ONJ with her piles of gold and platinum records immediately gave the film credibility as a musical.

I would love to see you react to my favorite song of hers, with Electric Light Orchestra, the finale of her huge box office dud (but huge selling soundtrack album) "Xanadu". The specific clip has her castmates, the legendary movie musical leading man and director Gene Kelly, and her love interest, Michael Beck (from the 70's cult film 'The Warriors'). She plays a goddess (one of the nine muses who inspire artists) who falls in love with a mortal man in Venice, California in 1980. The movie is fun (but kinda dumb), but the music all by Olivia Newton-John and the Electric Light Orchestra (with a small appearance by The Tubes). The song link...if interested...you rock, dude!!!

Since I lived on Zanja st. directly behind the school, we had to move our cars and the production co. replaced them with '50's ones. When they were singing the early song where he was with his cronies in the football stand bleachers and Olivia was singing her part at the outdoor cafeteria tables she got quite upset when she had to keep falling over one of the tables until the Director liked it!! They wanted extras too for $50. I said no because I didn't want to cut my hair short, LOL
