Dame Olivia Newton-John, born in Britain, Raised in Australia, Adopted by America! A national treasure in all three!! ❤ R.I.P
So true a sad day
She has a Charity for Women and Cancer Research in Melbourne
She is the only Sandy. Others have taken the stage role but no-one can touch her. RIP beautiful lady.
Grease is still to this day the highest grossing box office musical film of all time.
Apparently a fun fact is that when Sandy first shows up in this scene none of the male actors had seen her prior so their reactions are 100% genuine !!!
Olivia was an angel who blessed all of us with her grace and love. She spent a lot of her life supporting people in Australia with cancer. She raised $100 million to build a Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in her hometown of Melbourne. She also built one in the US. To us she was an inspiration and a hero. RIP Livy.
RIP Olivia ❤️ 🙏 I am a breast cancer patient so this hits home for me😢
Sending best wishes and thoughts ❤️
All the wishes for a happy end.
Keep fighting you can beat this
We are sorry to hear that! Keep fighting the good fight! You have us in your corner cheering you on.
Thinking of you. My neighbour, in her 40s, when I was 14, I’m now in my 60s had breast cancer and you can imagine my thoughts. I was wrong, she’s had cancer 3 times and is in her 90s now, and is better than many 90 year olds. Sending loving thoughts you’ll be bossing people around lol, in a kind way, like she does💞
In this movie the chemistry between them was real. They both had huge crushes on each other but were involved with other people. John Travolta had told people who were doing the casting that he wanted Olivia in Grease. She was such an amazing woman. You should read things about her and what she did for others. She is missed by so many people who made an impact on their lives. RIP Olivia Newton John. Now you will not suffer anymore. 😥😥
don't you think John's wife looks like her a little bit ?
@@juaraekspresyakinsdn.bhd.306 definitely. She looks a lot like her. On a talk show John Travolta said he loves blondes
Yes guys, there was definitely a 50’s throw back during the 80’s. It really got its start with Happy Days which first aired in 1974. Fun/strange fact: Henry Winkler/ The Fonz from Happy Days, was approached to play Danny. He turned it down because he didn’t wanna be type cast. Plus (no offense Henry) I don’t think that he had the singing and dancing chops to do this. Plus, Travolta was on the heels of his Saturday Night Fever success. Back then we definitely knew that he could dance. We were supremely surprised to find out he could sing too!
My mum took me and my best friend to the cinema to see Grease when it came out in 1978 and we were 10. I wanted to be Olivia but she was well known in the UK before she made this. She was an amazing singer and will be greatly missed. Such a fighter. Rest in peace Dame Olivia 💜
My mum took me and my mate. We were 9. We came out singing and laughing our heads off. Great memory.
It was my friends 10th birthday and her mum took a group of us to see this film.
I am devastated - I grew up on her - obsessed with Grease - bought all her records. And surviving cancer for 30 years with such Grace - she also sold 100m albums as a singer. John’s reaction yesterday was heartbreaking 💔
John Travolta you mean?
@@ajorngjdonaydbr Yes - so emotional
@@louhillen8254 When I saw that he “signed” his Instagram post “Your Danny, your John” I seriously teared up. This is the third lady that he looses. The first was his girlfriend back in 1977, Diana Hyland. Then he lost his wife Kelly Preston not that long ago. Now, he lost Olivia. Breast Cancer took all three lives. 😔
@@bracita15 I know - devastating for him 😞
bought the double album in 1978,still got it and still play it.....grease is ageless....they were the perfect two for the movie......if it came out today it would still be a blockbuster...rip
well said and ditto !!
Grease is the word...
Grease was the only movie my brother and I went back to watch at the cinema after the first viewing, I think we went five days in a row, the last time we talked our parents into coming to watch it. Every time we left the theatre everyone was singing the songs and actually dancing. It actually felt like a party. Our usual choice of movie was a thriller or action film.
In my mind Olivia will always be Sandy!
Such a sad day to hear of the passing of Dame Olivia Newton-John RIP. Given a Damehood by HM Queen Elizabeth in 2020. I can remember her representing the United Kingdom in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, the year ABBA won. The summer the film Grease was released with one Song after another hitting the UK charts.
The film was set in the 50's, like Happy Days was.
Olivia was 28, she never looked her age, but nobody cares in the film!
I remember queueing around the block to get in the cinema
Sandy was completely different from anything Olivia had dome before and she was made for it.
From what you see, she was exactly the person we wanted her to be, only stronger
RIP
It is odd that before Grease she was very much like Sandy in the early part of the film. Then after the film she seem to adopt this persona for the next few years of her career.
Well, if it was made today they could just identify as teenagers... those days it was called acting and the suspension of disbelief . In other words, we were having such a good time we really didn`t give a flying fudge. 😁
Very much like Happy Days.
@@aharon59 It took a lot of suspension of belief that a 34 year old Stockard Channing was still in high school. 😆
I grew up listening to her music. Let me be there was one of my fav. Rip Oliva thank you for for your wonderful voice . Condolences to her family and friends and to her Grease family.
I'm beyond gutted, taught myself to sing with this wonderful ladies music, she got me into country music. Not ashamed to say I cried last night. R.I.P thank you for all the wonderful songs and memories.
I was also crying so much, this one really hurt💔😭😭😭😭
I cried like a baby.... What a stunning singer and a beautiful lady
Grease was a musical on stage before it was a movie and breaking into song is a part of musical theatre.
I don't think anyone cared when the movie was released that the actors were all older than the characters were supposed to be - the movie is so much fun and the actors all did a fantastic job.
RIP, Olivia. Truly among the Muses now.
Olivia Newton John beautiful to the core. As an 11yr old I loved Grease and have so many happy memories of re-enacting scenes and songs from this iconic film with my friends. Of course my love for Grease was passed onto my daughter who now aged 13 years has that same love having watched it many times (watching it with innocent eyes as I did ). Olivia your legacy lives on. You will be remembered forever. May you rest in peace and much love and condolences to your family xxx
I am 48. My mum took me to see the film in 1978 when it came out and since then i must have seen the film 30 times plus. Yes the cast are in their late twenties playing teens but this is one of those films you just sit back, watch, laugh, and just enjoy.befors you know it the high school dance is on. I am a heterosexual male who is not afraid to say he lives grease. Thank you olivia Newton-john. May you rest in peace x
This was the first movie I remember seeing in the theater. Still love it! RIP Olivia Newton John! 😢
What a beautiful voice she had.
R.I.P Dame Olivia
I miss her to I never played her before god bless you I never forget stay strong and keep being you I love you ps
In a very eventful career, Olivia sang for the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 and came 4th behind a Swedish band called Abba. Wonder what happened to them. Olivia was also my first crush. Feeling very sad today.
Happy days = Fonz The wanderers film are a few throwbacks to the 50 60s
RIP, Olivia Newton-John ( 1948-2022 ). Born in the UK. Like the Gibb brothers. And emigrated to Australia. Like the Gibb brothers. Became a Legend. Like the Gibb brothers.
LOL Travolta was also in an old tv show called "Welcome Back Kotter" and worth a view.
RIP ONJ 💜🙏🎶💜
When you get a few minutes, check out her more 'grown up songs' - my favourite is ' A Little More Love'. RIP Lovely lady, Olivia!
That’s my favorite song by her too. Also Deeper Than The Night.
I'm with Daniel on all of this. Grew up with older sisters in the 80s and this is how I remember John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. Must have seen this movie 20 times, a classic.
Myself and my friends all had the trousers and the shoes she wore. None of us who were much younger looked half as good! RIP Olivia! Thanks guys for the tribute 🙏 xx
I was visiting my aunt in America in 1978 & we went to see Grease at a drive in - which I didn't even know existed until then! - & I loved it ❤️ .... up 'til then I only knew Olivia Newton John from the TV show with Cliff Richard & for her country songs. I am truly sorry that she has passed away.... RIP Olivia 😢
Shame that when people mention ONJ most people only really remember her role in Grease. They forget that she had a very successful singing career before that, with several massive hits.
Yes and 3 grammys and various other awards before Greece
Songs like I Honestly Love You, Totally Hot, A Little More Love, Physical, Don’t Stop Believing.
Heartbroken. She was iconic. Loved her music and her sweetness. The hairstyle you're talking about is a classic 1950s style called a Ducktale. It was very popular. The movie was set in the 50s.
Guys, I was 19 when this came out ……..I’ve never forgotten this 👍
Can I suggest Xanadu where Olivia teamed up with Electric Light Orchestra
Love this movie, seen it so many times!! Love them!!! So sad about the news of her passing!🥲RIP Olivia Newton-John!❤️❤️ Thanks for you tribute! ❤️
Great movie from simpler times. The soundtrack is a classic and will endure. My teenage kids love it. 👍
Aww so sad, my sister had breast cancer, she's in remission . May Olivia rip, she was a true legend
Good luck to yor sister xxx
Great news on your sister Joanne. Wish you all many more happy years together
My mum would have been playing this song all night had she been still here today, she loved grease and Olivia. I offcourse was brought up on the movie grease through my mum and older sister n all. Rip Sandy
British born 🇬🇧
Lucky for her she escaped when she was young. Identified as Australian so enough of your churlish pissing contest.
@@gavinb4847 still British no matter what. Can't change the place where you were born. Touched a nerve, have I?
@@teviottilehurst can't choose where you are born. There are alot of people upset today so why don't you try and show some class instead of letting us know you read wikipedia.
@@gavinb4847 but I'm just conveying the facts. Can't see why that may upset some people. Wikipedia has in fact become more factual with its content. Anyway I don't need any encyclopedia to tell me ONJ was British as she was born in Cambridge England to a Welsh father and German Jewish mother.
@@gavinb4847 she identified as English on several tv programmes when she was interviewed
Hey lads, i got into punk in 1977, when this came out I went to the pictures with a girlfriend to see this, under protest may I add. But now I'm older I sat through this with my daughter. I can honestly say I enjoyed it. 😂 😂
The very first song I ever heard from Olivia was The Banks Of The Ohio and I loved her music, including Grease songs, but my favorite would have to be Come On Over. Rest In Peace sweet lady and a lovely tribute to a lovely lady...thanks guys
Mine was and always has been Sam, her voice and the feelings in it are just 🥰🥰❤❤
Thank you for this uplifting tribute to Olivia. I am Australian, and our country is definitely feeling the loss of this wonderful woman. Olivia has left behind an incredible volume of work, both singing and acting, however her greatest gift to us all, was her commitment to Cancer research as well as the Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia. I do hope everyone can donate to the Olivia Newton John Foundation Fund.
This movie never gets old, all time classic! R.I.P. ONJ!
Grease was filmed in the summer of 1977 (Elvis died in August 1977) and released in June of 1978. Obviously the actors were much older than the parts that they played. Stockard Channing (Rizzo) was the oldest at 33. Travolta was 23, Olivia Newton-John turned 29 during filming. Lorenzo Lamas (the jock that Sandy goes with for a short while) at 19 and Eddie Deezen (Eugene) at 20 were the ones closest to high school age, LOL.
I was 15 going on 16 the summer of ‘78 when this movie came out. Talk about obsessed. I bought the double album, sang all the songs and even acted out the movie while listening to the album on headphones. I was lucky enough that my sister, who is 6 years older than Olivia, owned a pair of high heels pretty identical to these. 👠 I’m sure that Olivia’s were red leather and wood soles. I was satisfied with red God knows what fabric and plastic soles. I could never wear those shoes longer than the duration of this song. They hurt like the dickens! I never really liked high heels, but I’d proudly put these on while re enacting this scene in the living room. Yes, I wave my geek flag proudly. 🤣 Back then, I was as skinny as Olivia too. God I miss those days.
R. I. P Both Olivia and Judith.
Still have the original album from when I was 8 yrs old. My childhood right here.
This song went number 1 on the Billboard charts when I was born in 1978 when the movie was released
Ramiro Maia It was number 1 in the UK for nine weeks. Grease was absolutely massive in the UK the film came out in 1978 when I was 8. Love from the UK.
Back to 1978 in a London primary school we kids were obsessed with Grease, and this song was number one for nearly two months in 🇬🇧 England.
And I remember him as a Brooklyn high school troublemaker in the sitcom, "Welcome Back, Kotter" (1975-1979).
His catch phrase was, _"Up yer nose with a rubber hose!"_ ! lol
There was a 1950's revival in the mid 1970's. This was ignited by the film American Graffiti (even though that took place in the early 1960's - it still had a 50's feel) and then later picked up by films like "The Lords of Flatbush" and tv shows like "Happy Days" and it's spin off "Laverne and Shirley". Grease came in at the tail end of that. A lot of this had to do with culture of the 1970's - which was pretty much dead in the mid-1970's. People had just woken up from the 1960's (and were starting to see the negative results of that decade) and were talking about this "simpler time" of the 1950's.
Your the one that i want. The Angels have obviously been shortstaffed. Your in the right place Olivia. RIP. You will never be forgotten. 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Fun fact: Jhon Travolta's passion was dancing in his early movies he would only take a role if it allowed him to dance in at least one scene. But along the way he lost that part of himself. Oh and this movie wasn't 80's it came out in 78'
Elvis died in '77. Grease came out in '78.
RIP Olivia Neutron Bomb
I suddenly started crying whilst watching this. Poor Olivia!
The ode to "the happy days" tv show I think. With Johnny being The Fonz. That's the way I see it.
Wow .. I was 10 yrs old when Grease came out. I remember 8-10 of us ALL KIDS getting on a bus into Dundee town centre to the Odeon Cinema - Different times !! .. WOW .. A flood of forgotten memories 😮😮
Watched this so many times in my life! RIP
Its crazy to think when Grease came out the 50s were only 20 years ago 😯 as a kid I thought they were a loooong time ago in history.
RIP Olivia😥
My dad took me and 2 friends to see this when it came out…have loved it ever since. Olivia was truly wonderful 🤍
ONJ also played in the movie Xanadu. RIP 🙏. Much love to you and your family 💕Brandi Modrak 💕
Happy Days yeah. There was an obsession with the 50s era in the 70s. RIP ONJ ❤️ Thanks guys.
God bless Olviia. R I P
Thanks guys remember it well in the 70s 👍🇬🇧🇺🇸
I recall it was filmed over the summer break at a real school. Possibly the best value for money filmever made by a studio. BUt Judith Durham and Olivia in two days, that's a lot to get over.😪
My Melbourne town lost two of its legends this week. Olivia and Judith Durham from the Seekers. Two amazing human beings. May they both rest in peace.
You mean Cambridge England with regard to ONJ.
@@teviottilehurst does make me laugh that most of the people Oz & yanks think are their stars were born elsewhere, being fair its probably the same for us in the UK that we English speaking peoples love an immigrant!
@@gavinhall6040 i agree. We 🇬🇧 don't claim Kylie as ours despite the fact she found international fame in the UK and lived in the UK for many years, nor Rolf Harris come to think of it 😆 I think the Aussies will claim almost anyone as theirs because they don't have many artists that are internationally well known. Just my opinion.

The first girl I ever fancied. R.I.P.
I cant think of any other movie than Grease that had so many hit in the Uk charts, several of which were weeks at number1
I went to see this movie when it came out over and over again. I think it got to the point I knew every word of the whole movie. So sad as she has battled with breast cancer for so long
Remember I went to see this at the pictures when it was on first time around - must’ve been mid teens. It’s been so long I’d forgotten what a great singer ONJ was. Vaguely remember she had a regular slot on the Cliff Richard show way before that - and represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest one year.
Also this movie, perhaps minus the singing and dancing 😜, set in my mind what American High School was 😊
Back in the mists of time, there was a spoof of this particular song (in the UK) by ageing comedians/comic actors Arthur Millard & Hylda Baker too, which is very odd.
Yes, it was supposed to be in the late 50s early 60s period. Yes I grew up with Olivia’s music being an Australian the same age. Beautiful person. Daniel you are the brains in this outfit.
Upbeat cool song.
Other favorites: Xanadu, Physical, Make a Move on Me, Heart Attack, Twist of Fate.
Best wishes to daughter Chloe and family 👪 RIP Olivia Newton John
So sad, she was loved internationally by most RIP ❤🇬🇧
It's like Ed Sheeran&Russ say: the goal isn't to live forever, it's to create something that will
...'after the birds bring me my clothes' - that is bloody funny dude - RIP Olivia - what a beautiful soul who will live forever in our hearts
"after the birds bring me my clothes" 😂🤣😂🤣
"Tell me about it stud!" Love it!! ❤
RIP ONJ 🙏 🕊 🌹
Remember having to queue for hours with my family to see this movie. Well worth the wait.
RIP. Olivia
Embarrassingly, I have always thought of Grease and this song in particular as low brow trashy nonsense, but I think I finally understand, now that it is too late for me, that there was actually an extremely valuable life lesson in this song, which unfortunately went right over my head when I watched Grease as a young boy. If I had understood it then, my life could well have turned out to be infinitely better. Some of the details of how it is portrayed in the movie do perhaps slightly obscure the message. The transformation of Sandy from sweet and passive, to leather clad, can perhaps be misinterpreted as becoming slutty in order to get the man she has fallen in love with, which would be a bad thing. I'm pretty certain now that the intention was rather different. When I was in school, I did meet a beautiful, smart and strong girl, but I didn't step up ("shape up"). I effectively just said to her "here I am, take me or leave me!" and, no surprises, she left me alone. It never even crossed my mind that I needed to step up so as to work with her as equal partners to secure a successful future for us both. So, I think that is the message of Grease and this song in particular. It is about power dynamics in a relationship. In the case of Grease, Sandy does in some sense "fall in love" with Danny, but she knows that it can't work out if they stay as they are, i.e. Sandy all sweet and passive, while Danny takes nothing seriously and is lazy. So, Sandy transforms herself, not into a "slut" but into a driven assertive woman and sets about telling Danny that he now needs to "step up", or else there is no chance for them as a couple. The important point is that Sandy doesn't transform herself into what Danny wants her to be, or even into what she thinks Danny wants her to be. If anything, Danny would probably have been happier, at least in the short term, with the sweet and passive version of Sandy. No, it is more that Sandy wants a successful life and Danny needs to change for that to move forward. Sadly perhaps, this is probably the reality. I say sadly, because there is a bit of a fine line over which marriage really becomes little more than a mutual business arrangement, often ending in divorce if financial goals aren't reached, or something like that. However, it is basically a sound principle that a successful relationship can only happen if both partners contribute proactively to building a life for each other. Sandy made sure than Danny got that wake up call!
Also Danny tried to change into a jock for Sandy. So they both understood they needed to make changes for themselves and each other. I don't know at least that's how I see it.🤔
@@natalieburnham3300 Yes, it is certainly something along those lines. Note when Danny sings to Sandy, after her transformation, "the power you are supplying, it's electrifying!" This is pretty clearly a reference to Sandy having become a "powerful woman", in some sense.
70’s !!
Nothing comes close to that decade.
Ya man I’m Aware that She Did Impact my Life😇😢🌹❤️🙏..Even as a Child I Loved the Songs from Xanadu..The Movie Kinda Corny But The Songs Mesmerizing/Haunting/Beautiful

My Favourite film, Named my daughter Sandy Dara.( Sandy D) :)
Cheers guys .very sad day in Oz she was a beautiful woman and a inspiration to a whole country
In the UK there absolutely was a 50s throwback in the 80s both mainstream with The Fonz and Grease but also James Dean and Marylin Monroe posters were everywhere, club-culture had a strong 50s influence in the post-punk era, rockabilly and psychobilly was popular and kept the music alive and the quiff or the flat top on the boys heads, shopping for original 50s clothing like vintage baseball jackets, Levis, checked shirts (all US imports to the UK) - was also a big thing. We were raised on Elvis films playing on TV during in the summer holidays and our parents 50s record collections. I still love the imagery from that era. I remember queueing three Saturdays in a row to see Grease when it first came out, the queues were so long we didn't get into until that third attempt. RIP Olivia,
Great film. ONJ was a natural beauty. Just a gorgeous woman. And the bass line in this song is fantastic
yep iconic no other word for it
Spencer and Daniel should recreate this in tribute. Spencer be Olivia Newton-John 🤣
One of my top 5 favourite films.

its weird to think that theres a theory that the entire thing is sandys last moments fantasy as she dies after being pulled from the water too late apparently it explains the flying car at the end among other things
RIP Olivia What a talent 👍👍🔥
Rip to beautiful and talented Olivia..she fought so hard and gave so many other women hope too...as for John, although this really isn't about him, I just wanted to acknowledge the huge talent he is, as an actor, singer and dancer..he's got a lot of crap from the tabloid media in his lifetime and a ton of heartache and tragedy, and wether you agree with his religious beliefs or not he has always conducted himself with dignity and kindness...Olivia loved him dearly and that speaks volumes...Sleep soundly lovely lady..💔💔💔
