    Marketing departments have become very clever at dodgery and telling half-truths. Even at making up impressive sounding but meaningless jargon to sell what is often nothing more than snake oil. A hobbyist aquarium is a singularly inappropriate Beta-test site for products a manufacturer has not fully R&D’d themselves. Our aquariums are not the proving grounds for new products that may have teething problems. It now borders a hobbyist on the behavior nearer to that of a test-consultant than an aquarium-hobbyist. We succinctly define the responsibilities of a manufacturer of aquarium products: First, to be able to make a worthy product. Second, to be able to make it consistently and reliably. Each is as important as the other is, and both are relevant to the consumer, not just the first.

      Thanks for the visit. Innovated Marine makes some decent product and aquariums however, for something like this to slip through the cracks and then everybody raves about how great it is. No, that is not right..

      @anoxicfiltrationplenums Yes, I totally agree! 👍 Thank you for highlighting this. You're definitely correct. #WaterTreatment #Sustainability #CleanWater

    Thanks for this Dr. Novak! I was considering buying this since they have it for $49 (50% discount), but I'm trying to reduce my manual maintenance time not increase it! Seems like I will stick with my caddies/socks.

    Hello have a look at the "reef mat" filter. This is how it should work.

      You're absolutely right about that filter. But the filter I'm showing is made specifically for the small desktop aquariums that the manufacturer makes. But it needs too much attention and can't be left alone for more than a few hours before clogging up. Sad very sad.

    Dr. Novak, in the aquarium hobby, are there filters that use "Cyclonic separation" for mechanical filtration? Something similar to what Dyson did to shrink Industrial filtering in vacuum cleaners. Ideally, the Hydrocyclone(s) would be the size of a hang-on-the-back, canister, or the rectangular space used for the sock filter.

      It's the same principle as sand filters that they used to use back in the 90s. But the sand kept getting sucked up into the aquarium, so they kind of went out a favor.

    Every Aquarium Marine Mechanic should be required to have an aquarium or two, & use their own products to work out the problems.

    Dr. Novak, is the under gravel plenum only for freshwater aquariums or does it also work the same for saltwater?

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  Před 3 měsíci

      It works just as well in a marine system as it does a freshwater system. It will grow the same bacteria.

      I know, right? The product is well-made, but if it doesn't work, it's nothing but the Emperor's new clothes.

      Nobody wants to be a slave to their aquarium and especially a slave to a pre-filter that constantly needs attention. That is uncalled for especially from a manufacturer that made the pre-filter , custom-made the pre-filter for their aquariums. I hope people heed my warning and do not buy this filter because it is a waste of money and time.

    Who the heck puts their pollyfill or filter floss as the very first thing the dirty water hits in your filters?
    It's better to use a Coarse sponge then a medium grade sponge into a finer grade sponge "then you invite a filter floss or pollyfill to polish the water.
    Placing filter socks or floss as the first step you'll be asking for too much maintenance & algae issues.
    People, please use coarse, medium & finer sponges before placing filter floss, Amen

    ok, i just looked at my 20 Long tank with over 50 fish. half guppies and 6 each/ het rasboras, white clouds, zebra danios, galaxy rasboras, and one clown loach, about 3". running one commercial hydroponic airstone, and no mech filtration. tank is completely carpeted with dwarf sagitaria, top to bottom, 1 year old. (i was out of town and came home to 15 dead female guppies so that might have been 70 total fish when i left) changed1/2 water immediately and so far ok)i just measured the fish and snail popo, it is 3/4'' deep along the front glass. water is clear. why are we even filtering? you just proved it is pointless. you would need a filter as large as the tank itself, which would be a plenum,(which i think would be just about right), but it seems it is completely unnecessary(although i am planning on using). my sag is growing like crazy, and the guppies like rooting through it. btw, i like listening to this rant or some reason. 3rd time. why are you filtering tanks?( it seems impossible due to the bioload clog/filter change every 24bhrs)). i am looking for box filter, now that i bought 5 lbs of coconut charcoal. (i wanted bone charcoal, but that is brainwashing? why do i think bone charcoal is better than coconut?, that's a good quest) just to keep water pure as possible? maybe i've gone down a rabbit hole. not looking for mech filtration, maybe chemical...do any of us really know? we have really been brainwashed and can't decide what to do...(i like the multiple pain in the ass references). you're hitting on a peak experience level..

      I've used bone carbon before and found it to be better than coconut charcoal. However, coconut charcoal is cheaper to make than bone carbon is. I'm with you on that one. Why is it you can't seem to buy bone charcoal anymore?
      I also found that some of these carbons, which are made from coal are pretty much useless.
      Biological filters have to be made so large because it needs to break down all the organics that become part of the problem of polluting our aquariums and then makes it inert so it does not bother the system any longer. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of healthy bacteria to do this.
