Thank you Doc. I know it seems like a thankless thing you are doing but I hope you truly understand how invaluable it is to many people out there trying to understand the ins and outs of caring for our wet pets. Wish you all the success in this space in the, hopefully, near future. I really believe this is some seriously important information to be spread amongst all who wish to hear it and just hope it can reach all who are looking for this. Can’t wait to put some of this science to the test soon!

Have learned a ton about “the dark side of the nitrogen cycle”.
I have set up my primary tank with 1/2” native laterite clay, 2.5” of basalt scoria (vesicular lava) and an inch or more of coarse granular sand…
About two months in and plants growing well, and have never had detectable ammonia, nitrite or nitrate even though I have heavily stocked the tank (28 tetras in 29 gal breeder).
Not sure what is going right…and maybe wish I had done a plenum…but feel like the very thick and porous lava will allow some iron to leach upward through it, and some anoxic zone development within it.
Fingers crossed that algae stays at bay…because that had been my doom before.
I would really like to see a video about the long term cycles you have discussed before …points when different algae and chemistry occur in our tanks…and how to get through those times without losing plants and fish.
    Anyway, thanks again.

I am wondering if a 20PPI or 30ppi filter sponge would work as a plenum on the bottom of my small tanks with the substrate added on top of it.

Do I need to need to add a air pump to get slow moving water to an under-gravel filter plenum to have it work right? Or can I just have a plenum and at least two inches of substrate above it to get some anoxic filteration? I am wanting to set up three small aquariums, 2 ten gallons and one 5 1/2 gallon. Thanks!

Do bcb alter water parameters like gh or kh or tds ? This question is open to everyone

  • @Mikinct
    @Mikinct Před 4 měsíci +1

    Question.
If I plant a Pothos roots into my tanks ecocomplete substrate that has a plenum but not air pump attached to it. No leaves in the water column, growing like gang busters because it's next to a window with 10+ hours of actual daylight/direct sunlight for the plant.
My question is, is this plant actually pulling nutrients like ammonia, nitrates out of my aquarium to keep fish safe & happy.
Or is it only pulling ammonia & nitrates when roots are floating in tank water full exposed roots.
    Or do both ways work.

    ❓4U
Would having a variety of substrate types & depths in the same aquarium
( To create different leaves of oxygen - allowing different types of bacteria to grow)
Could this work ? And well enough ? :)

Dr. May I suggest putting links to products that you use and endorse. I think you could easily make some bucks with affiliate links to Amazon. Something simple like a cat litter that works would probably sell like hotcakes. I know I spent my valuable time on Google looking for the fzone ss filter. I was surprised that there was no link in the description.

Everybody today should be savage enough to look up on the Internet and find products that I'm talking about without me putting links to everything. After all, this is the age of the computers and most people now take computer science in class. What you should've actually said: Is people are so" lazy" that they don't want to bother looking up anything they just want to be told immediately how to do it. It's almost like a student in class asking for the answers because they’re too lazy to go out and study.

Off-topic, Dr Kevin, I have available to me 3 different types of clay cat litter, Attapulgite, Bentonite, Zeolite. Does it matter which one I use? I'm using it to build a Plenum as well as BCBs, appreciate your feedback.

    A) for you its more "educational material". Or its more of your Hobby.
    B) Thats $3,000 you didnt have to take from your own pocket to buy new products again, for your Hobby.
    C) viewers in other parts of the world are now looking at you as a Millionaire.
    D) you didnt need to do a part time job 5 days a week after week. You put a new video out "whenever you feel like making one", not too shabby.
    E) Back in the day if one wanted to reach 10,000, 100,000, 5 million, 10 million people they would need to spend their oen money to market/ advertise to.
Keep at it, you enjoy it, the folks watching find it entertaining/ educational its a "Win/Win"
