  • Geologist Dr Brooke Johnson takes us on a brief tour of the geology of the Isle of Arran, Scotland.
In this episode we look at the Permian river and desert deposits, evidence of ancient flash floods. We also see one of Huttons Unconformities, were early geologist James Hutton began to understand the true age of the Earth.

I didn't take any gps or grid refs while I was there. But, the locations I visit in these videos are all listed with grid refs in the guide book by McKerrow, so check that out. What was your mystery?!

@@geologyjohnson7700 mud cracks! that was the mystery, I was in Caithness last June and came across a 'fossil' a huge slab on the beach that looked like crazy paving.. put it there to find out what was.. mangrove roots was suggested [!]
Since May of last year I have fallen down the rabbit hole of geology [check out my video - for other lay people I may add] sexing up the subject.. I hope you approve.
But more please..it is like uni without the debt ..Arran, Mull, and back to Knockan Crag in 22

@@julesdingle Would love to get out to the other islands, I went to Skye on my undergrad 1st year field trip. The Caithness is Devonian so a bit old for mangroves, but there were other plants, and plenty of mud cracks as the lakes dried out under the arid climate. The more geovideos the better, I will go check out yours now!

@@geologyjohnson7700 I hope you enjoy them.. and I'm more than happy to be put right.. I'm a film maker not a geologist but every new projects gets me to learn a bit more. Current project out hopefully in a week or so is the S.Wales coal fields, the innovation of geology essential for mining at the time.. industrial and social revolutions ...and the revolutionary evolutionary development of wood.
And trying to get my head around the Welsh Basin.. mountain building is one thing.. but an anti mountain !
Just waiting for improved weather for Arran, Mull and Lewis.
