Today we learn how to play The Wanton Song by Led Zeppelin.
I’d just like to take a moment to wish you all a Merry Christmas and thank you once again for the continued support.
Following last months Zeppelin celebratory success I’ve been wading through peoples requests for lessons. The Wanton Song was one that came in the high double figures. As always, I worked things out by ear and inevitably put my own spin on things. In short, I do what I Wanton, and so should you. 🤘🏻😂
Have fun.

Omg. I just realized it’s like “MY SHARONA “””. Now I have to see who did it first
@@godbyone no its not, rediculous analogy
Page likes to use jazz chords when reg major bar chords would suffice. Plus jazz chords sound like crap when used with distortion
Been trying to learn how to play for the last 55 years. I find these videos to be very entertaining, and easy to follow. Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Ah James that’s amazing. What was troubling you all this time? Stoked you’ve got it now. Well done!
One of my favorites… great work. I learned Ten Years Gone from you and it was surreal playing something I thought I never would or could
I love hearing stories of success like this. Well done! I hope you have fun with this lesson too. 🙌🏻
Still trying to learn that one
@@SpedSpedding I'm still learning Four Sticks & Misty Mountain Hop , the Wanton (Noodle) Song has great riffs too .
Wow really a favorite of mine. I've been playing bass pretty much since I was 9 years and I'm 58 now. I picked up most of JPJ LINES. Six years ago I decided I would give the guitar ( both acoustic and electric) a go. It hasn't been easy but perseverance and awesome teaching lessons such as these makes it so much fun. You really make a difference.
THANK YOU !
@@mauricerobillard612 Sometimes its difficult to make your finger not Hulk fret the strings after playing those Bass cables. ;-)
Splendid job. Quite an enjoyable piece of music. Thank you
As a very late convert to Led Zep I'm discovering new songs all the time and the groove to the Wanton Song blew me away . I don't like singling anyone out in the band because as individuals they shine on different songs but...Bonzo what a drummer 😮
Cheers Sped, your time spent on these songs save the 'lazy buggers' like me Years 🙏😎
Fantastic lesson. Such a great teacher Sped. perfect!
Great stuff, mate! Thinking a mega lesson on the epic “The Song Remains the Same” would be sweet sometime in 2022 🎸🎸🎸
You’re not wrong, will have to do some homework over the holidays. 🥸 And thanks!
Live version!
Great lesson! Thanks 👍🎸🎼🇺🇸
@@SpedSpedding Why not tackle the entire Soundtrack album one song at a time? I know I am not asking much..
I second this! There has not been a good lesson on CZcams for TSRTS. WE BEG YOU SPED! I also just joined your Patreon! I don’t even know what Patreon is, but if it supports you then I’m all for it 😎
Bless you Mr shedding one of my favourite songs I've got some stuff to practise now
As always, masterful. Thanks Sped
Great walk thru and fun song to play
fantastic stuff man. revisiting this for upcoming gig ❤
One of my alltime fav Zep tunes. Finally decided to tackle this one, it's a great tune, Jimmy was brilliant at mixing chords up, I always learn something new on guitar from Jimmy. Great job putting this one together.
Brilliant! Excellent lesson. Thanks Sped!
You’re welcome! 🤘🏻
Thanks sped for showing how much a musical genius jimmy was with that solo actually the entire song you always cheer me up thank you
Learning the drum part, this has helped me no end. Thanks for the lesson.
Flawless. Thx for the upload....
Sped , I really enjoyed this one, fantastic lesson, lots of cool riffs great break down of the song. This song is a great workout for technics and quick changes. Keep up the great work which I greatly appreciate. Thank you 🙏 👍 🤘🎸😎

Very cool sir. Youre a great teacher. The Wanton Song one of the many reasons I love Zeppelin. Because they were interesting
Sped its simple your LZ breakdowns are the best I have seen. Great channel I only recently discovered.
Seriously, I’ve subscribed just a few weeks ago and really astonished at the work you do to these complex arrangements by Mr Page , and bring em down to earth for us simpletons.
Keep up the great work !!
He’s my favorite guitarist and composer, and you have gave every song justice for how you teach. Bravo
Ah, that’s amazing. You’re welcome. I’m just doing my thing on here, amazes me hearing all the stories of success and the amount of fun people have. Thanks for sharing. Keep it up. 🙏🏻
Thank you. This was done well

Very nice video. Love your sound, Thanks. What a riff =)
Many thanks for teaching this song!!! Could never find a good lesson of this until now especially the solo section. Rock on!!🤘🤘
My pleasure Cullen, I always try to include as much as possible in the videos. You wanna see the fat I trim out! 😂😂
Great videos. Thanks for making these so easy to learn. I like how clean and precise your playing is. Inspiring!
Thank you, I’m glad that it all comes across nice and clear! I’m always experimenting with different camera angles and lighting. I like to keep the audio as crisp as possible.
I make content the way that I would want to see it I was learning. Glad it resonates with you.
Very very cool, thanks for another great lesson Sped !
You’re welcome. 🦜 have fun.
Always glad to see another up load thanks again 👍
Nice one Gary, enjoy.
Thanks Sped, great lesson. All the best to you and yours this holiday season and in the coming New Year!

Love this! Thanks so much for sharing, really appreciate you noticing everything. Have fun with all the other videos. 🍿🤘🏻
Amazing once again Sped
Thanks Charles! Appreciate the comment. 🔥
You really do a good job on the videos! They feel like they have a theme and the story before is great. Also love the consistency of the content in the videos.
Yeah, thank you. I try to make each video like a little episode from a musical tv series. I guess I’m a sucker for a story arc. 🍿😂
Great lesson. Nicely done!
Thank you for learning with me!
Got to this today and I am ecstatic. Blown away from the first time I heard Wanton, I must have listened to it a trillion times, but never tried to jam along to it. Thank you for my Christmas present & for the minute detail, super visual fret board tutorial. Tricky in most areas, to say the least.... the trillion audio visits I had, allowed me take to it, almost, like a duck to water. I definatley wouldn't have nailed certain parts/sections. But now! thanks to you, I have it in the bag. Hats off man....You've made my 2021 Christmas Day. Happy New Year.
Wow. This is so cool to read. Sorry for the delay, I took some time off. So happy you made progress with my video. I love hearing peoples success stories.
Happy new year to you and yours! ✨
I knew this song would be coming sooner or later and was looking forward to it! Tried to figure out this one many moons ago and ALMOST got it (like you ALWAYS only "almost" got Pageys riffs). With your help i'll be getting a lot closer to the truth. Love this song because all these parts are so damn challenging to play. Thanks a lot, Sped! I appreciate your work and skills as musician and teacher!
Yeah for sure, this one has loads of peculiar but brilliant angular phrasing. Jimmy does that so well. Well, you’ve got a big full moon tonight (if you’re in the UK?) so what better time to jam it out. 🌝
Your the best. Thanks 🙏
Sped.. Thanks for another great guitar lesson..right on jimmy’s style 👍it’s such an Awesome song to play.. 🎸
Outstanding lesson!! and Thank You for the early Christmas present 🎄
It’s my absolute pleasure! Merry Christmas to you.🎄
great lesson man.
Incredible lesson! Just in time for winter break too... I'm definitely spending my break watching your other videos. Thank you for your time man!
Hope you got stuck into them over Christmas. My time is yours. You’re welcome. 🤘🏻
Thank you for another fantastic lesson, I greatly appreciated your efforts!
You’re welcome Andrew. Have fun.
Spot on sped...... spot on!!
Thank you Mike! 💪🏻
amazing song---and amazing ly taught--really appreciate your videos on Zeppelin's great material
Thank you Timothy. You’re welcome, hearing back from everyone is really cool. All the success stories and light bulb moments; it’s why I do what I do. 🔥
Always enjoy the tutorials. Thanks, Merry Christmas and God Bless. If you are ever in the Birmingham, AL area let me know.
I'm very happy to have this lesson! Thank you !
You’re welcome, have fun with it.
Great lesson Sped!
Thanks Pete!
Very cool...Thanks Sped
You’re welcome, thanks for watching.
Another classic lesson and one I shall enjoy working through soon. Thank you very much & Happy Christmas Sped the Led. :)
Have fun when you get round to it. It’s a great tune to learn, full of character and awesome licks in the solo too. Have a good one too. 🎄
love it. I swear I say "oh, now this one was always one of my favorites" with every new lesson you drop. The bounce or the grooves are just so right on. The chords or licks themselves are never complex, but one could shed a lifetime just trying to get close to the feel and the groove. And, now I am craving steamed dumplings.
😂😂🍜 get yourself in the car and straight into the nearest restaurant. “Wanton Song for one please.”
“What?”
“You heard!”
Thanks for the ever lovely comments on the videos. 🙌🏻
@@SpedSpedding I might just have to complete that tasked errand and report back. Oh...and re: micro-tuning the StupidBString. I've always had a healthy love for all-things- Eddie Van Halen. As a result I am B-String-neurotic, and am always tweaking it to fit a song. And.....full-circle-tangent-fun-fact that you are very likely aware of.....EVH credits his experimentation and use of tapping to watching Page utilize pull-offs on Heartbreaker. so...yeah...that.
Thank you for posting this. Liked and subscribed.
Thanks for the sub!
Thank you very much Mr spedding.
My pleasure.
AWESOME Lesson !! I have been playing the song for years, But never had the solo ..THANKS to You I got it now !! Appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge with us !!! BADASS !!
Glad to help Jim, that’s so cool to hear. How’s it sounding now?
Wow another great lesson Mr Spedding plz continue on your Led Zep trip 🤘🏻
Thank you, and you’re welcome as always. I will continue as long as I can. 💪🏻💪🏻
Great lesson, love your approach… one of my favorite LZ songs…enjoyed and much appreciated!…
You’re welcome Mario! Glad you liked the lesson.
Great stuff. Best source of Zep guitar content.
Thank you George! I appreciate that.
So glad you chose to do a lesson on this great Zeppelin tune .. some great guitar on this and some great chords ... another fantastic lesson .. you are the 'go to' guy for Zeppelin lessons .. well done ..
My pleasure! Stoked to hear that, thanks for the kind words. 🎄
Sped, I am going back and re-learning all the Zip songs I used to play because of you! Great lessons. Outstanding teaching style, you rock dude.
So cool Tom thank you!
Some of the best Zeppelin content currently on CZcams. To my taste, the one bit lacking would be the bit where you explain things in terms of diatonic harmony as you go through the song. The wee bit of icing that would make an already delicious morsel even more savory. Sorry for the crumby metaphor.
Unlocking the mystery one note at a time!
I’m having a good go. 🥸🤣
Fantastic! I really like how you incorporated the book into the lesson! Kudos!!!
Thanks so much!
Great work Sped!
Thank you! 🙌🏻
Thanks!
Hey thanks so much Tim!
Thank you very much for the clear, concise guided lesson. You are teaching this old dog new tricks. At 58 I am playing songs of my youth!!
Brilliant love it!
Pleasure!
@SpedSpedding having problems playing the octaves string skipping at tempo ... any suggestions on building speed?
Thank you!!!
You’re super welcome. Have fun learning! 🍜🙌🏻
Led Zeppelin has been my favorite group since 1971 and you crush it bro! I like UFO too keep ‘em coming Thanks!!
Thank you! I like UFO too, very cool band.
Awesome, thank you !!!
My pleasure Aristo!
Dude YES! You killed as always!🤙🏼😈
You’re welcome Nathaniel! Glad I got it good, have a great Christmas! 🎄🤘🏻
@@SpedSpedding YOU have a great Christmas my guy!🤙🏼
Fantastic lesson! Thanks
Pleasure. 🙌🏻
Another great lesson mate! Always loved Physical Graphiti, bought it soon after it came out when I was in 6th form. Brilliant album in a brilliant sleeve.
Yeah it’s a work of art. The window cut outs with optional inserts. The passion for art flows through everything Zep did.
Nice!
Sped your my go to Zep authority!⛧⛧⛧⛧⛧👑🏆🤘💪🎸
Blows my mind when people say this. Stoked you’re learning with me. 💪🏻
When the pupil is ready, the teacher appears. Thanks for doing all this Zep. After Wanton is mastered, I will go to your other videos. Very accurate.
So cool! Thanks for the comment.
Cracking as always mate, great work and someone that loves zep as much as me. I’m too young to have seen them live but was lucky enough to see Page and Plant on the two tours they did in the 90’s.
Thank you! Ah how cool, I’ve never seen any of them together but I did catch Plant last time he played Manchester Apollo on the Carry Fire tour. ❤️ He was amazing.
@@SpedSpedding the first time was the unleaded tour with the two orchestras with the black crowes as support, the second was just a four piece where they played more of the longer songs, both brilliant in their own way. The Apollo is a great venue, seen many bands there.
I might have a trip to bron-y-aur next year sometime, might be cheesy and take my acoustic.
Amazing I just wanted to learn this and this poped up hah!
The algorithm has served you well today friend. Have fun with the lesson. 🔥
Sped.. Thank you for your awesome teaching again…Great Song👍 Have 6 zeppelin songs now.. wanton makes it number 7.. I can’t believe I’m playing Jimmys Solo..Lol. It’s all in your teaching.. Thanks man..❤🎸
Sounds great
Thanks Ron! 🔥🍜
Here's my big, fat comment. This is one of my all time fave Zep tunes. Like so many of Jimmy things, it's not complex, it's just hard to play it with his swagger. Anyway, well done. I know I'm two years late with this, but I guess it's better than being ten years gone, BWAAHAHAHAAA! Seriously though, you rock. I tell everyone about this great guy who gives great lessons. If you ever do a lesson on the solo to For your Life, I'll have like 1000 of your children.
great stuff mate
🤘🏻😏
You're awesome sped
Thank you Bobby. You’re awesome too.
I'm one of those taught players, everything I know is basically a repeat of what I've been taught. I don't have any natural talent. I am always impresseed with players like yourself who can figure things out from listening and watching someone play in a video of a live concert. Not only are you good at that, you're one of the best teachers I've encountered and my list of songs that I can play has greatly increased thanks to you.
That's so lovely Craig thank you for the compliment on my teaching style. I've been doing it for half my life now. Merry Christmas to you!
I hear my Sharona, great lesson! Happy Holidays, from a Bass player
Best Regards! ✌🏻
Wow bro this is awesome !!!!!!You actually did it thanks brother✌️❤️😊🎶
You sound surprised? 🤘🏻😉
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it. 🎄
Well done! 80’s game over lol!
Thanks so much for this one. This has one of the greatest bridge sections EVER and shows the genius of JP. This song brings me back to a great time in my life. Zeppelin-G.O.A.T
That’s amazing, loads of songs like that in my life too. Literally hearing a second of them can whisk you away.
You’re welcome for the lesson. And yeah, that middle section is masterful. He must have sat there for hours crafting these ideas. 🤩❤️
@@SpedSpedding I have a killer backing track of this one if your interested?
Awesome 😎
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent, sir!
Thanks Eric!
Another great lesson! I’ll definitely be changing the way I play it. I never attempted the solo before but I guess I’ll add it to my list now that you have a breakdown of it.
Keep up the good work, Sped!
Thanks David! What bits you gonna swap out? The solo is really cool, had to listen close to a few sections, taking me around the houses. 😂
@@SpedSpedding I like the little muted elaborations you use in the chorus. Sounds much better that way in my opinion. I’ll work on the solo after I finish learning “Big Log”. Haha
@@brotherbungle Haha, right time of year for a big log. Glad the little mutes and other things like that are useful. 🤘🏻 #chikkachikka
You got the best guitar channel on you tube. Thanks so much for this. Been playing it wrong for 20 years.
Wow, thanks! You're so welcome. What did I do differently to you?
@@SpedSpedding there was couple things. On the main riff I didn’t know each note was played twice. I always thought the first 2 were only played nice. AND the F to F#. I always just used power chords. Sounds so right when I heard you play it. Thanks again. You have a great talent. Thanks for sharing with us mere mortals
Mr. Spedding, Great videos Man! I've had this Sunburst standard 80 Heritage series Les Paul for a really long time. I think it's an 82. Love playing anything Jimmy. If I can stop laughing long enough to give it a go, I'll play along with this video too..
Haha, glad to know that the humour is coming through. That sounds like a nice guitar. And yeah anything Jimmy does is fun to play. 🤘🏻
Cracking lesson.. very 'Jimmy' riff.. great work as always!
Thank you Mike. It is indeed isn’t it. It’s weird how all the Jimmy riffs are very Jimmy don’t you think? 🤣🤣😂 Christmas done and dusted for you? 🎁
SPED!!!!!!! You are the MAN!!!! Awesome. Thank you so much!!!! I am so appreciative you did the lesson finally I can learn the song correctly.......In the Evening??? :) :) :)
You’re welcome, it came in hot from loads of people so I put some time aside to get it right. 🍜🎄
Your Zepp lessons are THE BEST EVAH!!!!
Thank you Peter! Appreciate your support.
We....a bunch of old rockers just getting together to make noise,,,LOVE PLAYING WANTON!!! Thanks for the solo breakdown, I've been ad-libbing and will now take the time to learn your method. Great lesson!!!
hitwithanattitude1: I would love to join your band though I'm not sure I'm a good enough guitar player and have moved a bit too far away to pop over for an audition. Keep it up! 😎
That’s cool, a few people recently mentioned they had most of a song down but would take pieces and kind of upgrade their version. I like this. How it used to be years ago, sharing ideas amongst friends and getting better. 🤘🏻
