Following on from teaching @GabriellaTavini the opening section a few months ago, today we learn how to play Babe I'm Gonna Leave You by Led Zeppelin.
There have been many requests over the years to work through some acoustic Zeppelin tracks and this felt like the perfect place to start. I have loved this song from the first moment I heard it.
Have fun.

Was wondering about that. Excellent, I just used the link to snag the Led Zeppelin book and the Pink Floyd one as well. Thanks!
@@guitarthink Oh awesome! Thanks for using the link to support. I hope you thoroughly enjoy them both! ❤️
What’s her name?
Y'got me... bought the book! I'll be back to buy a mug in the not too distant... BTW you should do your own line of 'Proper Brew Tea'. Just saying... Up The Blues!
I was happy for link to book. I used and really appreciate how you did this lesson. THANK YOU. I can now do this song better than before I found your tutorial.
Been binge watching all your Zep tutorials. Gotta say I really love the story time section before each lesson. You’re hands down the best Zeppelin guitar teacher on CZcams though I’d love to see a SIBLY tutorial since only Carl Brown has full a tut
By far you have the best and most entertaining tutorials out there. You teach for perfect sound and tone. It inspires me to always play nice and clean. Thanks
So so cool, thank you so much. I’m just happy that you’re happy. Have fun playing this incredible tune. ❤️
You play it perfectly. You have perfect timing.Your also a great teacher with a no nonsense approach.Thanks.
I appreciate that!
I love this song. I've been playing it for over 40 years. Back then, there was no CZcams. It was still bloody hard work.;-)
Iove watching you play. I always learn something new 😊
Awesome, thank you!
Amazing lesson Mate!
Cheers!
Awesome lesson!!! I definitely need to get this book, looks like a lot of zeppelin secrets in the studio.
P.S. You are by far the most accurate zeppelin/guitar teacher on CZcams🤘🤘
Thank you Cullen! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Well you know where to get it when you do. It’s a Zeppelin bible! 🙌🏻⚡️
The story time before the tutorials is majestic. Great song great video!
Everybody loves story time! Especially me. 😂❤️
Thank you for the solo variation part I can’t find anyone else covering that bit and it’s the nicest part of the song I think 🎵
Thank for teaching me this beautiful song. Great job.
It’s my absolute pleasure! ✨
Wonderful lesson!! Keep on the great work!👏👏
Thank you! So glad you liked it. 🙌🏻
What a treat on this beautiful Friday morning ☕️ 🤤 Coffee and Sped. That flamenco part is so badass I love it
Haha, it is isn’t it. You can give it some more olé after you’ve had your coffee too. 💃🏻
Another awesome lesson from the amazing incomparable legend Sped!
Another incredible comment as well. Thank you! 🙌🏻
Wow once again sped you've nailed it.a brilliant teacher,a true professional.
Thanks so much John! 🙌🏻
Excellent Sped, it prompted me to listen to the original straight away. I love this song too, it has a real classy sound and feel to it, and still sounds as fresh as when it was first recorded.
Nice, and thanks! I’d always encourage listening to the original whilst practicing. Helps to be able to slow down digitally nowadays as well. Yeah Zeppelin songs really are timeless, they’re still being synced in cinema now for big moments. They have a song for every occasion. 🙌🏻❤️
Oh yes Sped! I can play this to a degree but I’m looking forward to learning your interpretation, just as I did with The Rain Song. Cheers.
Amazing, yeah I tried to move through as much as possible without going to town on every single little change here and there. Once you know enough the rest will follow.
huge fan of your lessons - thank you for your hard work. . .
Glad you like them! Thank you.
Brilliant! I really enjoy this class. Thanks
You’re an A* student! 🙌🏻✨
Another beauty Sped! One of the first songs that i learned on guitar. Used to play this to my kids at bedtime. Thanks for filling in the tricky bits!
No problem, which were the tricky bits? Also, that’s sweet. I’ll do the same one day.
@@SpedSpedding I definitely wasn,t playing the bridge and the ending as accurately as you did. My kids are now in their mid to late twenties. I would love to record this song for them. Now, if i could just figure out how to fully utilize Logic Pro !
My God, youre brilliant. Best teaching with correct notes on the net. Amazing!
Wow, thank you!
Thanks Sped! I have been playing this for years from some crappy tab i found way back when. Cant wait to learn your, much more accurate, version.
Yes! That’s exciting, let me know how you find it in comparison. Might take a while to “swap it out” but you’ll nail it. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thanks!! I love your guitar lesson!! I love led zeppelin!!
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
Always quality and a good sense of humour...thanks Sped ! 🙂👍
🙌 🇫🇷 from France
My pleasure! Glad the humour comes across; all about making people smile, if I can.
This is the first song I’ve ever learned. Taught me some good techniques. Only got up to the flamenco break and never got that bridge down. Time to fully learn this beast!
Yeah there’s a few more parts worth learning! Have fun and let me know how you get on. ⚡️
Oh sweet! Yet another awesome song to learn. ..and that Thumbnail. Perfection haha
😂😂😂😂 I love her. Always up for anything. ❤️
great lesson, thank you so much!!! Love it!!!
You’re super welcome! 🙌🏻
another GREAT lesson. Thanks and best wishes from Mississippi
You’re so welcome! Thanks for the support.
I friken love you Sped! A gem you are.
Love you too! Thanks for watching my stuff.
Sped, I really mean it, you are a very good teacher. Your delivery of the lesson and the detail is second to none. I just wish you would teach us the song "In The Evening". There really is no good lesson out there and it is such a great song. Please teach us.
You are very welcome. So glad you enjoyed this one. I like to keep everyone on their toes Braxal. I could drop it at any given moment.
absolutely beautiful acoustic.....Tangerine is another gem....thanks Sped
Agree with you there. And yeah I love this guitar. I am actually enjoying playing it more with the lighter strings I have put on for Gab.
@@SpedSpedding I ALWAYS use light strings....better bends...cheers mate
@@isMike999 Yeah I am gradually taking all strings down. Better on my wrists too. I have no gauge ego.
@@SpedSpedding hahahaha...good one Sped
A wonderful song!
Thanks for that, man :)
My pleasure, enjoy it!
great great tune and awesome lesson.
Awesome, thank you man!
Sped, I think your Zeppelin lessons are super bad ass!! Can you do a lesson on Since I've been loving you!! I know there are already lessons on CZcams but if you did it I know it would be awesome!! Thanks for taking the time to teach us!
Nice one, Sped. Appreciate your lessons. Gonna struggle with this one I think!
For the most part it’s not too bad. There’s a couple of violent stretches in the middle though! 😂 Take your time with it. Have fun.
Love the way you teach sped razor!
Thank you so much! Appreciate that.
Excellent Sped!
Thanks as always! 🙌🏻
Great job
Your wit (and guitar plying )got me to sub😁👍
Welcome! 😂
Exxxxxxxcellent!!.. been waiting for this one.. as with a lot of my stuff i tend to just learn part of it, so i could play the intro but now i can complete it and play all the difficult bits and stretchy chords, and play the main riff 'properly'... I'll admit i play it JP style (1st finger picking the D string) so will prob stick with that as relearning will be a bit of a pain... VERY comprehensive lesson as always, so i should be able to play it all the way through now.. finally!!!..
That’s absolutely great. And you know me; I’m always encouraging people to find their own style with things. I bring my thumb over for separation between bass and treble but you can do whatever you like. Some people will pick it too. Let me know when you get it down. 🙌🏻
“I like the variation of tone. Ok? Good.”
Epic.
Amazing accuracy; great lesson.
😂😂 haha I remember that. Thank you!
Hey Sped, Love the breakdown. The descending main riff in the bridge was a new variation to me. Nice tip Amin+9 to Am7. Those chords are heavenly. Such dissonance. Those Page comments. I nearly pissed myself laughing with that!! Thank you for all your time teaching us. Music really does bind us all together on a cosmic level. Now I have to go and practice. If I play it 50x I should have it nailed . Love it.
Be well my brother. God Bless. Cheers
Fantastic!
Cheers Mike!
Great lesson mate
Thank you Mike! 🙌🏻
Dude. You are ridiculously talented, funny and likable. I loved this lesson. Thank you.
Thank you so much! Stoked you enjoyed it and dig my style. Loads more content like this in my channel! 🙏🏻
Youre _The Best,_ mate 🎸
outstanding thank you!!
My pleasure. 🙌🏻
This channel needs more subscribers honestly
🥺❤️ In the meantime, grateful for everyone here.
Firstly, much, much credit to you for your not only very high standard of musical articulation, but also for your tasteful sense of humour. And what I am about to offer could be an electric guitar part, as I no longer have access to the superhype tab books now, I can't confirm. I would feel most privileged to assist with the rhythm part starting at around 2.22 in the song. Now according to the tab from the official superhype books it begins with Am at the 5th fret with 3 strums barred, 1 strum open, then 2 strums barred. Next is G barre chord at the 3rd fret beginning with 1 strum open, 2 strums barred, 1 open, then 2 barred, followed by F# barre chord at the 2nd fret beginning with 3 strums barred, then 1 strum open, followed by 2 strums barred [same as Am pattern], then F barre chord is 1 strum open and 2 barred, then E nut chord will be the same with 1 strum open and 2 barred. So as you can see there is an alternating variation happening with beginning barred and beginning open. After listening to the official version it sounds like it is indeed the electric guitar part, which is also sometimes doing the descending glisses.
Also, I hope that this format of presenting it was acceptable.
Please let me know what you think and if you know of an easier way of going about it, that would be greatly appreciated as your input always is.
Nice sound on that acoustic
I've got a few parts under the belt, and now maybe I can actually learn it to the end. (I hope) Your lesson was really good, you took your time and didn't rush it. I like that. It's hard to teach this old dog new tricks. I can do the finger picking, it's just remembering the different variations, I also appreciate the chord names, instead of just telling us where the fingers go. I have got you hooked up now so I hope to visit you often. I found you by looking up the STW-TO-HEAV solo, is how I found your channel.
That's great to hear, yeah that video has been quite popular and I believe it helped a lot of people nail certain parts. More rhythmic difficulties that anything else. Glad you liked this one too; there's bits that change here and there throughout but you've got everything you need, use your ear to guide the rest. Have fun.
Thanks!
My pleasure!
VERY GOOD!!!! EXCELLENT!
Incredible! Thanks Sped for another awesome tutorial! What kind of acoustic are you playing there, sounds amazing.
Thank you Jake! I've just pinned a comment above with the information for you. It's a Faith Blood Moon.
Finally got around to this brilliant zep song, you was in top form Sped, both lesson and humour, if you don't know who by what you doing here 😂 thanks for the lesson.
Hahaha you’re welcome Victor! Glad you had fun. 🤘🏻😂
Was listening to this song right now and got the guitar tutorial by the end of the song. What a coincidence.
I have been planning the whole thing for months, waiting for you to play the song..... 🤣
Came for the story time , stayed for another great Zepplesson !!
Need to dig into that book for a second Story Time. Might have to rope Gab into reading a chapter or two as well...
Woah, first comment. Love this tune. Can't wait
I think in writing this comment Justin went and pipped you to the post! You'll get it next time. Haha
@@SpedSpedding I was robbed! I demand a recount 😉 great lesson thanks 👍
I never use a pick because with finger picking I can pluck several strings at once and I find it more accurate and intuitive.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Thanks for that.. 🤘
No problem!
Hahaaaa There's always one bit with Page! Why? Love that! hahaha
Hahaha it’s true though. 🤣
I'm embarrassed to say I've been trying to learn just the intro from when you were teaching Gab 😂 It's a beautiful sounding song 🔥 Great lesson again Soed 🤘🏼
Nothing embarrassing about that at all. Things take time, never crank the pressure. Just practice and enjoy it. Makes sense for me to have a complete isolated lesson as well as the one with Gab.
@@SpedSpedding I'm enjoying improving on my finger picking, just the repositioning of m fingers I've got to work on. I'm glad you have, found a part in the song that I can learn a bit easier & quicker
Thanks
Pleasure, and thanks for the extra love. Appreciate that.
Great! ✌🏼
Thank you Fernando! 🙌🏻
Thanks for your lessons brother ! Would love to hear how you teach Dyer Maker
No problem, my pleasure. Glad you liked it. 🙏🏻✨
"BABY, Baby, baby, baaabeeee..."
I went looking for lessons on "How Many More Times" and was completely surprised at the dearth of anyone doing justice to this song. Just bits and pieces, here & there, over the hills and far away. No solos, nada. Queue the Mission Impossible theme song "Good Morning Sped, Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create an accurate lesson of "How Many More Times" from LZ1. As always should you create anything unworthy of the "Good Book of Zep" CZcams will disavow any knowledge of your existence and demonetize your video. Good luck Sped. This tape will self destruct in 5 seconds."
Dear Mr Spedding, even 'in the days of my youth' when I imagined that I was playing a great version of 'Babe' your fiendishly accurate lesson has shown me how off the mark I actually was. (Wrong, simplified and repetitive picking pattern, missed notes, probably not even in the correct time meter, I blush). Now that I'm an old dude, with less ego and a touch of arthritis I appreciate the chance of finally playing this song properly. Once again, thanks for another great lesson Sped. All hail to the Mighty Zeppelin!
You’re incredibly welcome. Thanks for sharing your story. I always do things my own way based on what I hear, I don’t tend to go off and study videos too much; once I get a good feel I just go with what feels most comfortable. Stoked you liked this lesson. It’ll give you enough to make it through. ❤️
@@SpedSpedding Thanks for the kind words. I'd just like to add that as well as being one of my favorite acoustic Zeppelin songs it is also one of the best sounding recordings of an acoustic guitar on an album, period. Then again there was something absolutely magical about listening to (particularly), LZ's first four albums on vinyl back in the 1970's. I was always in awe of how all four members of the band, while nailing down the framework of a song then rarely repeated themselves while improvising and elaborating like the consumate musicians that they were. Cheers!
I am 55 and I have been trying to play this correctly for years,I love this song, but I am too anxious to get it right.Maybe it's ego, maybe I am too much of a tweak.
I almost have it,but not quite.
Thank you for the lesson brother,I will try again today.
Damn you! Bloody brilliant video again, and probably after maniac pretend Guru Teal Swan the best hair on CZcams. Yeah I can cope with those changes now you have elucidated them. Interesting how Page has these formulas. I expect to join the Patreon soon. Bloody good breakdown of that and hugely grateful to you for the free content. X
Second best hair? We can’t be having that now can we, must try harder. 😂 Thanks and you’re welcome. Hope you have fun playing it with me. 🔥🙌🏻
Would be so awesome if we had the fills as well! Thanks for the great detail oriented Zeppelin Lessons..
I mean, I pretty much taught everything? Even the fills.
@@SpedSpedding I must have skipped the one part I was looking for. Can you give me a time stamp?...sorry for the criticism.
As always & I sound like a broken record but great job. I learned this ages ago on my own before CZcams & all the other great fast ways of learning songs. Thanks for showing the proper way to play some of the sections that I was playing wrong. Cut the hair a little I see looks good. In your opinion though do you think some players are getting too dependent on these videos & losing their ear? I mean I think it’s great when you have someone like you who actually gets it right & dissects it part by part but I’ve seen some really half ass terrible videos on CZcams of people butchering some songs. I’m self taught on both bass & guitar but from always learning stuff off albums I can pretty much tell if something is being played right. You my friend constantly gets it right plus you have the right personality. As always best to you & Gabby. I wish you guys all the happiness in the world.
Never a broken record Joe!
Wonderful comment and thanks for sharing. Ultimately I think the years of teaching has made work hard for answers, correct or as close as ways of playing things. Pride myself on working hard so if I don’t go the extra mile with accuracy I feel I’m not working hard enough. My ear is something I’ve worked on over the years and being in bands definitely helped, especially of a progressive nature. I don’t think learning from videos would dumb you down, it would probably help you start to hear and see things connect and maybe next time encourage you to make a similar choice when working something out by ear. Win win.
Thanks for the reply & you’re right it doesn’t dumb you down but I think some of these how to videos on other channels kind of steers people in the wrong way. You definitely have a good ear plus the theory to do it right. Having a good ear helps dramatically. I’ve been in cover bands & have learned stuff like Perry Mason by Ozzy & Time by Pink Floyd in a dressing room & playing it in the next set lol. Best to you & Gab
Yep!!!
Yesss! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
@@SpedSpedding much appreciated, as always!
One of the first Zep songs I learned.
When was that?
@@SpedSpedding Oh my gosh. Probably in the early 80s 😬 I always liked the acoustic solo. Love your lessons by the way.
What a beast. Goes on forever. Loved it. That's a great sounding guitar by the way. Just one quick question though, don't know if I can start learning this tune without knowing the answer. Are the plants in the background real or plastic?
Yeah it is a beast! Thanks, I pinned a comment above with more information about it. Gab is using it for practice now so it’s got light strings on it. I like them. 🙌🏻
Hey Sped, maaateee, i have a unique request! I want you to do a vid on how to play the theme from Thunderbirds on guitar! Atually you look a bit like Alan Tracy! Gab would make an awesome Lady Penelope! Thunderbirds are go! FAB!
Nice
🙌🏻😏
I forgot to mention, I like the lyric changes also by Planty in the Denmark TV show. It's better than the recording, more soulfully wanting her....
I really want to learn finger picking. It sounds lovely and it’s so frikken pro. Do you teach picking technique?
Nice! Some parts are different than the Official Led Zeppelin Complete guitar book shows but that's more options, which is good. Thank You!
Yeah they will be because I do everything myself by ear. I sometimes find even the official books to be way off… 😂 What do you prefer?
@@SpedSpedding appreciate you figuring it out. And since Page didn't do the official books himself, makes sense there are mistakes. Happy to have found your channel @ 4:30 AM in Texas! Subbed for the win.
oh YES....Jimmy....WHY....??!!......: .because he COULD.......🙂....leaving us mortals in the dust.......until you safed us Sped......cheers.....haha.
and that guitar of yours sounds pretty nice too...i quite fancy that....expensive?....
nice lesson...great song....as usual.....Sped and Jimmy...you've done it again....🙂l
i'll get onto it pronto....
and think about it a bit....before "leaving" Gab.....
Hahaha, yeah I will mull it over this weekend before I make my final decision. The guitar is wondrous. It's a Faith Blood Moon. I've actually strung it up with extra lights and Gab is using it solely for her practice. Quite enjoy the light touch. I think it's pretty much hers now though... 😂🥲
@@SpedSpedding great...and another thing....Jimmy's "hallmark" was (or one of the many) his light "feathery touch"....well worth keeping in mind.....when i play the "heartbreaker" solo again......🙂
the best tutorial so far. and not only. love those "rants" towards jimmy page's artistry :)) so whole lotta love to you, sped! can you do a rainsong in standard tuning? i did my own, with bits and pieces taken from various youtube videos, adding my own things here and there -- however, i'm not fully there... so, pretty please: rainsong, standard tuning!
Thank you! I’ve done The Rain Song tutorial already with tuning change. I’d only ever want to play it that way so I won’t do a standard one. Have you seen that video? 🙌🏻
@@SpedSpedding yep, seen the alternate tuning one, but didn't watch it... a standard tuning version would be so much appreciated, insists he :)
@@charaiveti-charaiveti Yeah, I’m not making one as mentioned. Tune down and nail it, that’s an order… stop being lazy! 😂
@@SpedSpedding hahaha, aye aye, sir!
Mate, you are THE BEST at teaching Zeppelin, you really do get God! What are your thoughts on pedals in general, but specifically the Catlinbread RAH?
Thank you Mark! To be honest I haven't checked out that pedal but I am a fan of the Royal Albert Hall so what have I got to lose? Do you own it?
@@SpedSpedding no mate, but from the reviews im thinking it would be the ducks guts! Oh well, off to work then home to practice!
@@markhill9275 I have the Catalinbread RHA great pedal, when increase the master and gain knobs over noon you can nail the sound from Royal albert hall,
Is there any chance you could do a video of you playing this whole song please?
I really enjoy listening to The Rain Song you posted some time back. Cheers Sped.
Maybe I’ll do a short version at some point. I think people will be able to figure out what goes where from this though!
It’s not for the song layout, I just enjoy listening to you play.
Hey!?... That's not a Martin! Oops I shouted. The tutorial was quite lovely . The voicing on your guitar was perfect. I have to be honest, I do miss your lady friend.. Your videos are more important than any piece of gear I have. Thanks Sped!
If you wanna take me shopping I’ll meet you outside in five. 😂
We all miss Gab, I’ll tell her that she has been summoned to make an appearance in the next video. I’ll try and film some practice too.
I really enjoy your videos Sped! thank you..
Hola Mate from Mexico 🇲🇽 Love it!
Have you done Tangerine? I’ve subscribed so I’ll look. If not, how about some Zep Fruit?
Thanks Mark, glad you liked it. No I haven’t…. yet. Who knows? 🍊
That should keep me busy. So much variation in picking pattern think ad lib is the way forward for me 😉Cracking video and such a beautiful tone on that guitar…..what is it? Thanks
Thank you, yeah there's loads of little changes in the top harmony but essentially it's the same throughout. It's a Faith Blood Moon.
How to play black Mountain side?
13:21
15:55
The Am7 is the correct chord. Many people that teach this miss this chord.
Pleasing post, Sped. For some reason i've always forgotten this song when it came to my campfire Zep repetoire. It's back in. Question: What strings are you using and would you tell me what effects if any are you using with your DAW. I assume you use Logic Pro.
I actually just ran this through a cool Waves CLA plugin. The unplugged one has a nice blend of reverbs and delays. It's just running straight into Logic.
@@SpedSpedding Ah. Makes sense. Thanks, Sped! Alas I had a terrible accident with my Venus Nakes Hi-Gloss. It fell and the neck shattered at the head. I've been in mourning and haven't had the heart to look at anything guitar related since then. Moving onto my Tele for the forseeable future.
Can yuo tell me what guitar is that, is it 3/4? Thanks for the video.
Full size. I’ve pinned a comment with the model at the top. 🔥
What, no cheeky bends?…. I want me cheeky bends. Wonderfully taught lesson. So helpful
😂😂😂 he couldn’t be arsed. Glad you liked it Lloyd! 🙌🏻
Your playing is ridiculously good and you make it look so easy. I try this and I have an extremely undisciplined picking hand and I get a lot of dead notes. How do you do it? Oh well. I'll keep at it anyway. I'd rather play poorly than not at all. :D
Thank you! Loads of things can be a factor, fretboard, string gauge, hand size, hand position etc. Experiment until you find clarity then make that your first move. It’ll take time but it’ll pay off. 🙌🏻
@@SpedSpedding will do. Thank you!
Mate I love the bits where you read hahahaha. I'll say it again, story time podcast where you read chapters from RAWK books
You think I should just do one a week? 😂🙌🏻
I could do them with Gab 😍
The story remains the same . Thanks . 🪐
My pleasure Mike! 🚀
Important Question: What is the book that is used for story time. . . I need one.
Always linked. 🙏🏻
Led Zeppelin did a good cover of this song...
Yeah there was parts in the book about the origins.
it helps me to slow down the video in order to fully comprehend the changes
That’s the beauty of these lessons. You can take them at your own pace. 🙌🏻
I was playing parts of that wrong all these years!
Which parts?
@@SpedSpedding "Section Chorus 2" I never strummed that quite correctly. ie... I played the first strum of the Am with all strings on a down stroke and so forth with the other chords in that progression. You know kinda like how everyone stomps their war through that part. You play it correctly.
The "Solo Variation" I never did correctly! But I see you have the index finger on the F note on the high E string with the Am ...very nice...and that is what I hear Page doing. A valuable tip for me ...thanks!
The "Bridge" .. I play it entirely different, and I actually like it better my way not Jimmy's. (and not just coz mine's easier)
I start off with first finger on D String 2nd fret and G String 4th fret Picking the open A and open high E string. Then slide up the neck one fret, picking open A open B as well. Then up to the Open A string, Em7 position at 7th fret. Down to D position at 5th fret - slip one finger to Dm - slip one finger to Dm7 and throwing in a pluck on the open E and finishing on the F at the 7th fret on the B string letting it ring ...all using the Open A string.
I probably won't change that even if I do learn it correctly as you have shown.
I had the final section and ending all wrong so will learn what you have got there.
