fun fact the javanese actually still go to trade in madagascar until around 18th century. The sailing declined after the dutch put a size limit to how much a ship should be making on the javanese, causing them unable to make ship large enough to sail to madagascar.

In fact, the Javanese tribe during the ancient Medang/Mataram kingdom to Demak was a maritime kingdom but everything was destroyed because of the actions of Sultan Agung who destroyed the ports of Surabaya and Semarang because he was afraid they would rebel, combined from Pajang to Islamic Mataram, the capital moved inland so that it emphasized agriculture.

teeth blackening is not only practiced in japan and austronesian-speaking places. it is also practiced by austroasiatic speaking places like vietnam and southwest parts of china and tai-kra places like thailand, laos, southwest parts of china, and some tibeto-burman parts of myanmar and northeast india like assam, nagaland, meghalaya, even reaching eastern himalayas in tibet and nepal. it also reached chittorgarh in western india. then of course, in the furthest southwest, madagascar also has teeth blackening

there is a serious archaeological problem with proposing a linguistic connection between Japanese and Austronesian because there is no evidence that a substantial number of Austronesian speakers reached Japan in the prehistoric Jōmon (10,000 BC-1000 BC) or Yayoi (1000 BC-300 AD) periods.

@@jmgonzales7701 what about the hayato and kumaso people in southern kyushu? there are legends and still standing temples in honor of them in japan. also for archaeology and historical records. the mumun pottery period artifacts in the korean peninsula towards liaodong peninsula point back to shandong peninsula which has dongyi artifacts and historical records. throughout medieval times historical records in china, both japan and korea were also considered as dongyi, which means they thought dongyi that lived in ancient antiquity times in shandong to jiangsu were somehow related to the people of japan and korea. also genetic evidence shows that haplogroup O1b2 is detected predominantly over yayoi descended people in japan and korea. linguistic evidence shows that japanese has a few or some words that are like austroasiatic and austronesian words, which legends about dongyi people in chinese records show they were also present as huai yi and nanyi in yangtze estuary which is where ancient austro-tai and austroasiatic people were theorized or purported to come from. if they did not have common origin at some point, they were at least neighbors in the yangtze estuary area, with ancient proto-japonic being the northern component that also frequently traded with sinitic and koreanic speakers to their northwest and northeast

Interesting but not-so-fun fact: People from Madagascar were caught in the Transatlantic slave trade and brought almost exclusively to the United States. They made up about 1% of the United States’ enslaved population, and were taken mostly to Mississippi, Virginia, and New York. As a result, virtually all African Americans today carry this ancestry in low amounts and can retain up to 4% Austronesian DNA in their genetic makeup. Thus they have become the largest ethnic group of Austronesian descent (full or partial) outside of Asia-Pacific, despite most of them being completely unaware of it.

I don't know if this is intentional or coming out of a place of genuine unfamiliarity. However, the usage of the term "Indon" to denote Indonesians may be indicative as derogatory or a derisive term. The demonym is often used by neighboring countries (often used by many Malaysians, for example), who often encounter poorer Indonesian migrant workers often working overseas as housemaids. I'd hope to not as a way to divide or alienate fellow Southeast brothers by putting this fact in the open in this comment section, but as a cautionary notice to let you know of the indication of the term used. Perhaps avoiding using this term would be best for the thumbnail.

Long before european started the ocean exploration, austronesian people had developing a type of ship that specificaly design to sail the rough pacific ocean known as the Jung, means big boat.
Every austronesian kingdoms developed their own jung ship.
Two of the most famous jung ship are the Jung Malay developed by Srivijaya empire in sumatra (not malaysia *winkwink) and Jung Java developed by Majapahit empire in java.
Jung Malay was designed at first as cargo ship, designed to able to carrying loads of cargo with length that reach 80 meters. About twice the length of galleon. This is mostly the ship used by austronesian to sail to madagascar
Then, after srivijaya colapsed and majapahit born, the majapahit empire decided to develop jung malay even further to become not only a cargo ship, but also to be able to use as a freakin battleship. The majapahit did design jung java to be too OP since the ship are unable to be damaged a bit even by the most modern canon at the time due to the type of wood they used to build this ship are known to this day as some of the hardest wood to deal with. Which is Iron wood, teak wood and coconut wood. Not just any wood of this type, they using the oldest part of the wood that is hellish to cut.
If jung malay have length up to 80 meters, jung java have length up to 150 meters that enough to make galleon looks like a poor fisherman boat
One of jung java shistership that already famous to the world are the chinese ship Zeng He that bought by chinese empire and manugactured in java. Even zeng he is not the biggest of jung java since it only have length of 100 meters
In 13th century, the badas majapahit empres, the empress thribhuwana tunggadewijayawishnuwardhani or also known as Dyah Gitarja, send a convoy of a thousand cargo ship, escorted by 300 jung java to a diplomatic and trade mission to all civilization around indian ocean from thailand to south africa. I'm sure she's decided the coolest way imaginable by her to flexing about her empire's naval and economic power by sending a thousand cargo ship escorted by 300 battle ship. It's like sending a class of fat school kid to a schooltrip in other countries escorted by the members of mexican drug cartel fully armed with guns and armored vehicle
