The 2024 Ford Ranger Is Now My Favorite Midsize Truck, But Is It "The Best"... Maybe?

  • The 2024 Ranger is the perfect example of what's good for one person might not be right for another. For 2024 Ford has completely redesigned the Ranger with an eye on horsepower, improved towing, Baja running (in the new Raptor) and a wider bed for more practical weekend warrioring. What you won't find are: a long bed, a short cab, a 2-seat model, manual transmission, hybrid or... a sunroof. Yep, no sunroof. But since I'm not interested in those things but I would love a tasty 2.7L V6 under the hood... I'll take a Ranger...

    Alex and Travis, Every pickup ought to have the built-in bed steps. I don't know why some brands continue to resist this obvious innovation. 🤔 Kudos to Ford for offering a locking rear differential in their RWD truck. For those who really don't need 4WD, a rear locker can be very helpful for dealing with the occasional sticky situation. Old timers may remember when the Ranger was the top trim in the F100 lineup. As such, I would like to daydream of a single cab Ranger with an 8 foot bed as a modern interpretation of a 'right-sized' pickup. 🤩

    This was a LONG overdue redesign, but it still seems and feels like a half-measure. It is 2024 and the top trim doesn't have: sunroof, ventilated seats, HUD, keypad entry, 60/40 folding seats, or rear vents. Most of these things don't need to be standard, but for them to not even be available options is just a swing and a miss.
    The quicker Ford can fix those errors AND offer a PHEV option, the quicker they can dominate the mid-size truck market. I will happily "upgrade" from my Maverick Lariat FX4 to a Ranger Lariat FX4 PHEV as soon as they become available.

      Powerboost or regular hybrid. Whichever fits the platform. Ridgeline to me is still the winner if not towing regularly. Much more spacious and tried and true naturally aspirated Honda V6 with in bed trunk. Most people use their trucks like crossovers. Maverick is the Hybrid option but with the dealers taxing everyone it ends up selling more Ridgelines. May as well once dealer pushes you into $36k+ on a Mav...

    • @GavinSwick

      @@allanedwards2347 if Maverick hybrid was available with AWD and 4k towing that'd be amazing. Ranger hybrid with 4x4 and respectable towing (5500 or better) would be perfect.
      Having the Maverick currently, I would truly appreciate the increase in bed size that comes with the Ranger; while it is a minimal increase in length, it is a considerable increase in overall volume that's massively beneficial for transporting gear or any material that can utilize the entire volume of the bed instead of being constrained by one particular dimension.

    It’s certainly the best pickup truck in Europe. This and its badge engineered sister, the VW Amarok, both built in South Africa for the UK. The only variant we get that is built in Thailand [where Australia gets all models] is the Raptor in V6 gas and 2.0bi-turbo diesel. Personally I own the Wildtrak trim 2.0 bi-turbo diesel which is very refined and particularly economical considering its 205hp and 500Nm torque. As far as looks go, the original T6 I also own is a far more handsome beast. However and apart from a driver’s seat that no longer tilts independently front and back and some cheap black plastic on the rear bumper. Hybrids are on the way late this year from Thailand and South Africa. It is a pity America don’t get the diesel duo, the 2.0 in three power levels, single and bi-turbo, and the V6 three litre that was previously fitted to the F150 and Range Rover Sport. In Europe, all but the coil sprung rear end Raptor and the top leaf sprung Amarok Adventura have a 2250lb load capacity and 3.5 ton [7700lg] towing limit. This may mean that our springs are stiffer at the back, although there are several leaf spring versions fitted across the range with the Wildtrak being slightly softer unladen than some of the more basic models. Nevertheless the Wildtrak retains a 1060kg carrying capacity. Otherwise ours and your models seem identical.

      @@AAutoBuyersGuide For vehicles under two tons it is also out of fashion in the UK. Diesel fuel is actually 10p/litre more expensive than petrol, which I guess is around US $0.40 per US gallon more.
      Almost all pickups and large SUV’s like the Defender and Range Rover are sold with diesel engines here and the Ranger, Hi-Lux and Isuzu and VW Amarok are only available here with diesel engines. A small proportion of Range Rovers are sold with petrol engines but very much a minority. SUV’s in the Discovery Sport and Kia Sorento class have increasing sales as petrol mild hybrids and some plug-in hybrids.

      that isnt true. We would love a diesel in tis truck. It would be the number 1 selling engine. We just dont get the option because emision regulations. The US model would require a DEF addon which would make it worse and everyone would want their DEF deleted and that is super costly not to mention highly illigal nowadays. I would love a diesel, but ill wait for the 2.7 instead, not because its out of fashion, but because it just isnt offered. If I was rich i would import one from the philippines . They have the only diesel rangers that are left hand drive. Hopefully the US can get some small diesel options soon. This DEF bs has gatta stop...@@AAutoBuyersGuide

      @hedydd2 Před 4 měsíci

      @@billygames7107 DEF/Adblue is fitted to all European diesel Rangers and it is not an issue. I have three light vehicles with DEF and not had a single problem. The fluid is cheap and it uses about a quart every 4000 miles, so needs topping up every about 15,000 miles with 15 litres. It is very cheap fluid when bought in 20 litre cans at oil distributors or parts suppiers or agricultural stores and machine dealers. If you have early generation DEF vehicles or have issues with current systems, then those systems are below par. Most vehicles seldom if ever have an issue with their DEF performance. It significantly reduces exhaust gas recirculation volume requirements, which is a huge advantage long term.

      @@AAutoBuyersGuideI'm sorry Travis but that's an old trope that (the industry likes) keeps getting repeated. Yes, some folks do (and increasingly have to), but 6 ft beds have been available in compact/midsize for decades.....just because you want a 6-ft bed doesn't mean you want the behemoth rest of the full size truck, by a long shot. A compact/midsize with a 6-ft+ bed means, especially for singles and smaller family couple, much more useful for camping, play, hauling, work, projects, Etc,...for those still not necessarily needing/wanting the extra height, width/girth, weight, fuel use and (historically) cost of the bigger trucks. So, I guess for those wanting the longer bed it's on to the Tacoma and Frontier,...fine, but even they restrict on some models versus others. Ie, Toyota - some lesser trims yes, but no on TRD (both Off Road and Pro I think), but yes on Trail Hunter. Odd. You need a spreadsheet for this stuff anymore!

    No to the Maverick, its simply ugly. I'm down to 3 choices, the Frontier (for its looks and V6), tand maybe this Ranger, although yes it looks somewhat carlike up front. Tacoma no go with the 4cyl.

      I don't like chrome or piano black plastic 😄. Chrome is too reflective and doesn't look modern. The piano black plastic scratches way too easily and then looks bad. Same for the shiny black "pockets" in the rims. Got tiny scratches too soon. I'd rather have maintenance free rims like I had on my 2004 Taurus.

    And Toyota will continue to outsell the Ranger if you only offer it with limited body styles and options. This doesn't really seem like a complete redesign based on what I'm seeing here. There is nothing here that makes me want to use Ford's configurator to build one for myself.
