    👆 Today we are shooting out 3 of the best amps for bedroom guitarists to use at low volume. We compare the Yamaha THR10 to the Vox Adio GT & the Fender Mustang GT40. Check out our whole selection of amps here! | tinyurl.com/ye...

    It was a bit of a challenge to mic up all 3 amps in a way that really replicated the kind of sounds we get in the room. So unlike our normal videos where we close mic each amp, in this video we're just using a couple of room mics. I hope you find the sound OK. Its the same mics for every amp, so apart from their relative position, it should be a fair comparison. All these amps were recorded at home use volume levels.
    As we discussed in the video, many of you will be able to use bigger & louder amps at home, and if you're one of those people, then absolutely amps like the Boss Katana, Fender Blues Junior & Blackstar HT5 (to name but a few!) may be a better choice than these. But if you need something really small, and really quiet, then we think these three amps are the best!
    Let us know which one won you over!
    Cheers
    Lee & Rob

    2 and a half years later, those are still the best options for home use. All of them have their updates and tweaks, and I think it worth to "refresh" this review and maybe include the PositiveGrid's Spark.

      @drmojo5439 Před rokem

      It's now just a few days away from 2023 and while I agree completely, I have to say that after owning the Spark for 2 weeks, I had to return it, because of two reasons: 1) way too bass-heavy and 2) when you plug in, every single time, the amp readjusts to a default position or sound, which, is way too bass-heavy (surprise, surprise) and I had to adjust every single knob every single time I turned the amp back on just to get rid of the overpowering bass and to dial in the tone that I like, which is typically unchanging. It gets super annoying, especially considering that if it weren't for those two problems, the Spark would far and away blow these other three amps away in almost every meaningful way.

    Hey Chap and Cap, I just bought the THR10c and I'm loving it so far. I was looking for an amp that sounded great at very low volumes with FX that I could drag around the house to practice. I've got a Deluxe Reverb, Mark V 25, Blues Jr., pedals Galore etc.......but all are too loud for those late night cravings. I think that Fake Tube light is hypnotizing me, because I can get lost playing this damn thing! You guys are always honest in your reviews and I continue to watch for that reason. I haven't tried the other 2 yet, but as a guy that's used to having some nice amps to play through, this THR10c is really satisfying for low volume sessions. I tried the IRIG PRO with BiasHead 2, Amplitube and Garage Band prior to buying this, and it just didn't feel right.
    I ended up spending all my time switching through presets, turning dials and never ended up with a satisfying tone. The Yamaha just sounds good in every mode you put it in, which is what I respond to in guitar gear. I hope this helps someone considering buying one who like me, just likes gear that sounds good right out of the gate. And if you just want some tips on getting great bedroom tone in any tube amp, try a compressor and a drive pedal on together to limit the volume while adding the dynamics that a driven tube amp has. I used the JHS/Keeley Steak and Eggs for this and it is glorious.
    I will also say that this is officially my first you tube comment ever, and I felt the need to share so bad that I went ahead and did it.

      As for the Fender amp, many say that there is a setting which allows you to turn up the "tube bias" and "sag" (speech marks as they are both emulated due to the amp being solid state) and it makes the amp respond more like a tube amp and removes the boxy tone. I can't vouch for this as I've never used one but it may help.

      I think you're dead on Lee, I have a katana but still got a THR10x because it sits in a different niche than the katana, and the katana on 0.5w does NOT replace it.
      Yamaha is leagues better at that room volume goldilocks zone than the katana.
      Especially because the katana has a ton of low end that either overpowers the high end at low volumes, or if you start to dial it up, ends up having a lot of "annoy the neighbors" power.

    • @Pedrohsc2
      @Pedrohsc2 Před 7 lety +1

      Why don't you work with the volume knob on the guitar before recording the loop? Set the sound you like for the leads, then crank the volume knob down and record the loop, than crank the volume up and bem happy LoL. You can always turn the looper pedal volume up If the recorded riff become too quiet

    • @Paulo-ze1tl
      @Paulo-ze1tl Před 7 lety +3

      Scottish Ninja Came here to say exactly that. I've tested it and once you change the Bias and Sag settings, the Fender gets great tones that is able to compete with Katana 50. Among those three, I still prefer the Vox, though.

      It's only because miking a THR, with multiple speakers, is useless.
      And setting up multiple stereo mics would be a complete pain - 6 mics for a review?
      They'd probably have to find another 4 mics - all round it's a lot of work for not much reward when this looks like it was an afterthought (much longer and in depth than expected) in a days shoot.

      Weltall 89 I like it too. They got a nice representation of the tones in the room and it actually works better as a tone comparison between amps as moving a close mic even a small amount can make a big change to the sound.

    I'd like the Yamaha with Bluetooth capabilities; the Vox: with a less Bluetooth-speaker look; the Fender: more physical knobs.
    But with the actual models here is my ranking:

    3. Fender (I don't care about the looper)

Funny thing is, I haven't used anything other than the presets and they are just super inspiring, no regrets, and volume-wise am holding my own against "real" combos in a band rehearsal, and super-easy to edit WITHOUT using an app, just a really sweet tool that can take me from a convincing Fender to Vox to Marshall with a few dial moves.

    The amp I'd have for that application is one I sold years ago to a pawn shop. (I'd bought it from the same shop and turned a modest profit) It was a low-wattage Noble Class A (single-ended) combo with an 8 in speaker, built in the 1950's. It had volume and a passive tone knob and four inputs. It weighed less than five lBs and had a comfortable leather 'dogbone' handle. Apart from the handle, it resembled a vintage art-deco radio.

    I love the THR 10 BUT needed changes/features for the next version:
    1. Bluetooth, it IS sad this was not included from the beginning.
    2. Rechargeable battery. I would love to be able to move around in the house without worrying about battery changes/cost/enviroment…
    3. USB-C power connector (can give the needed power and is standard)
    4. A built in looper would obviously make it better and more useful
    5. A built-in metronome/simple drum-machine would make future guitarists better…
    AND, as an optional extra: It would be nice to be able to purchase a somewhat cheap wireless input system (i.e. but the amp at low cost, add later if needed, the wireless option).
    So, please inform Yamaha (and the others) how to build the perfect “Home training AMP”!...

When I´m into looking for new tones and amp simulations I´ll mess with with amplitube. I own a THR10 classic and I´ve been using the same preset for ages. This thing goes with me everywhere! Hello from across the pond. I have had a THR10C for about 2 years. I still believe it is one of the better sounding modeling amps. In addition I use it as the input/output interface for my computer both for recording and as my computer speakers. It perfectly matches that "Just Right" size and functionality that I need. It also takes pedals really well. If Yamaha comes out with a revision or new version, I would like to see an effects loop, looper function, and optional foot switch.

  • @CluntEstwode
    @CluntEstwode Před 7 lety

    @28:30
    The reason you become accustomed to that amplifier after some time is a phenomena known as sensory habituation, in which some form of sensory stimuli (being the tonal characteristics of the amplifier) eventually become ignored with prolonged exposure when the brain determines that it is not necessary to put effort into perceiving the sound as unpleasant. This, in a way, is a form of non-conscious learning. The boxy tonal characteristics of the amplifier in contrast to the other models eventually becomes ignored, thus making it seem much less unpleasant over time.
    However when you switch between the amplifiers, that habituation then loses it's effect, and the sound is perceived as being particularly unpleasant again, until the brain re-adapts to that sound.
    It works in much the same way that one may become accustomed to the temperature in a room over time, but when leaving the room the change in temperature is immediately noticeable.
    This is a really, really simple explanation of what's happening, mind you. People write PHD papers on this stuff, it's extremely complex

    Awesome vid as always guys! My verdict in the short and sweet. The Fender just sounds rubbish in comparison to the other two, I agree with you that it is likely the speaker is to blame. The Vox has great tone and features. I can see why Lee was drawn towards it. But the champ amp in my camp has to be the Yamaha. My god that thing sounds beautiful. I will be highly considering it for my next amp. To sum up the Fender needs a different speaker and/or interior cab treatment and the VOX and the Yamaha could do with an effects loop.
    On an unrelated note, I would dearly love to see a cheap rig challenge done with second hand gear! Something like £400 for a gig ready setup, that's guitar/amp/effects.

    In reference to the Fenders loop function... You could just put a looper in-line at the end of your signal path. All the effects you want to be looped, before the looper. Any effects you might want to run as "post effects" after. Sorry, just bugged me a bit that Lee said you couldn't do it, because you absolutely can. There are even stereo loopers, so you can run stereo effects in front of the looper.

    I've had the Yamaha THR 10 for a few years and love it for home use. It's just easier to get good sounds out of the Yamaha that don't bother everyone else in the house than with my tube amps. But I travel a lot, and the on/off switch is very fragile, and gets bent more and more on every trip. If I could change one thing, it would be to make that switch into a button! If I have to fly and the amp is going in my luggage, I bring the Blackstar fly 3 now. It doesn't sound as good or have as many features, but al least it's bulletproof.

  • @algarvemike

    The THR10 has a terrible problem that is well documented and known to Yamaha:
    When powered by 8 x AA sized batteries, it will power fail and switch itself off at volumes over 60-70% of its maximum volume. This does not happen when powered by mains power. Mains power can quite noisy, despite the change of power supply by Yamaha after initial faulty ones were issued. New ones are still noisy when using high gain amps, and power screening is not a strong point.
    Having said all that it is still one of my favourite purchases ever. Sounds amazing, like many here I wish Yamaha would produce a Mark 2 THR 10, and also promote the fact that you can change guitar speaker emulations, add compressor and noise gate using bundled software.

      BigEdWo You mean the THR10C and I have used it at home for a few years now. I think it sounds great, especially with your favourite boost or distortion pedal on the clean channel. Yes, its a bit trebly, but that can be sorted out by lowering the treble to 9-10 o clock. With headphones, I turn the treble up a bit again. Also have the THR5 acoustic, and use them both at once for stereo output, thats really nice both for electric or acoustic guitar. The only problem I have with these amps is that they can go louder than the speakers can handle, especially the THR5 is bad in this. But, at least it doesnt make everything shake in the room like with my tube amp, only the THRs internal speakers start to crack :-)

    I picked up my THR10, NIB, from Guitar Center when I bought a used Yamaha PAC611HFM. The THR10 was on sale for $179 - no brainer. The Pacifica sounds stellar with this amp. Rechargeable bluetooth receivers are ridiculously cheap and available - Yamaha should sell one as an accessory - a small dongle that plugs into the 1/8" jack. Anderton's could also stock them and suggest them when selling the Yamaha, or use them as some type of promotional. Yamaha could probably come up with a firmware update that would allow one of the presets to function as a looper. Yamaha, update your kit!!!
    Great video, and thanks for the subject. I have a Mesa Boogie Transatlantic 15 into a 112 cab and an old Crate VC20 10" combo that I run into a 212 Allen Organ rotary cabinet for a stereo rig in my living room. Both amps set clean, lots of pedals, low volume, sounds glorious!!! But the Yamaha is so fast and simple and portable. When I want a quick jam, it is the Yamaha. I also use it as a portable stereo player when doing auto mechanic work - it really makes a great stereo system.
