I did quite a few times.Though one did make a heroic impression on me.
      Rigger of Mead
This Tabaxi me and my group met while playing 3.5 edition
Owner of a Tavern - Blood of Yore
Real sweetheart she was, always giving out stories and dance to our dour and depressed group.
We found out she was a widow but have three kits that were all lively little balls of fun and joy.
Rigger of Mead was always cheering us up and preparing good mead and food for us to have whenever we returned to the tavern, we sort of made it our home base to build up our strength and levels.
Even her three kits followed their mom's cheerful mindset.
Despite our short comings she was a cheer and we all enjoyed her festive mood.
What we didn't know was that her kits became enslaved by a nobleman that hated our guts and she was forced to spy on us against her will or risk the safety of her kits.
Apparently she was fed up about it and told it to us straight.
We didn't believe it at first but she revealed how she knew sensitive information about us that we never shared or spoken about outloud.
We were upset initially but it was clear she would do anything to protect her kits.
We also remembered the times she and her kids cheered us on and listened to our stories of valor and adventures.
Rigger was even willing to offer her life if we could willingly go and save her children.
We were already fueled with both a need to avenge ourselves and Rigger and her family of the Noble's acts.
After a high stakes mission we saved her kits and put the Noble out of our misery for good.
What awaited us back at the Tavern was a still and cold Rigger.
The Noble had some warlock or magic user bind her to him someway that any harm to him was also done to her.
Despite knowing her possible end, she held faith that we would prevail and despite her cold form lying on the tavern floor, she had a warm smile on her face.
The group and I decided to adopt the kits and watch over the Tavern till they were old enough to run it themselves. Some of us retired as adventurers while others continued onward.
But we would never forget Rigger of Mead and her cheerful outlook on life and her catchphase.
"If you can't find happy moment in life. Rig some up and cheer with friends."

I have wanted to start a campaign based on many of these characters for awhile. I imagine a medium sized town that has a shrine to "Uhgee the Perseverant" near by. A potion shop run by a family of goblins. An estate nearby that is ran by a heavily scared Black Dragon. A vast library ran by a bronze dragon. A clan of Elves nearby that have a goodly Green Dragon as a trusted friend. ETC. I think it would be a great, and rather unusual start to a campaign.

My party is currently adventuring with a Kobold NPC who was kicked out of his tribe for alerting the party to their presence and renamed “Pothoc”, Draconic for Stupid. The party adopted him as a pet, but a lucky roll meant he spotted the assassin sneaking into the guild hall during their negotiations with the kobold tribe, and later, they discovered he’s a crack shot with a light crossbow as big as he is. Never intended him to become an NPC, but the party is incredibly protective of him, so with them he stays. We were more than happy to let him stay, after he dismantled all of the traps that he set up to protect the place, and made him the unofficial caretaker of the manor when we were gone. Unfortunately we found out his entire tribe had been enslaved for cheap labor and discarded. We were able to help him get his revenge on the cult that did this though. Afterward, we haven’t seen him since and all hope that he’s okay.

DM: "You are allowed in. You are now entering through the Sanctum of Heroes Small and Large. Walls of white, smooth material you cannot describe; floor made of black and white marble; all lined with pure, polished strips of gold.
In the gallery, you can see five statues, each of different type of gemstone, and many more empty niches. The statues are as follows:
An emerald statue of an ogre, wielding a beautiful sword. It is labeled "Garg, the selfless Paladin".
An onyx statue of a dragon, rubies as eyes. It is labeled "Onyxia, the noble black dragon".
An amber statue of a bard. Lyre in her hands, and beautiful, translucent specters around her. The label reads: "Yirbel, the bard who sacrificed herself".
A statue of a hooded undead, made of diamond. The description reads: "Astoshan, the Grey Necromancer".
The fifth statue is made of olivine, and shows an ogre, happily hammering at a forge. It is described as "Ooghie, the honorary Dwarf Crafty-Smith".

    Jessix Leondria, wolven butler.
I've been DMing an ongoing set of campaigns, and two of the players are both from the same household, Vertiliae, a bloodline of vulpine assassins that take contracts at the state level. Sparing details of the homebrew, the Vertiliaes tread the dark pretty closely, but they aren't without honor. This led to me creating an NPC for a story arc that required visiting the Vertiliae's home. The NPC was Jessix, a retired inquisitor, world weary and looking for a place to spend his retirement. Vertiliaes had helped him several times through his career, and he wanted to see that debt repayed so here he was, sweeping halls and doing laundry.
He was originally only supposed to be around for a single arc, but he was depicted as a master swordsman and both wise and fatherly, so players kept going to him for advice on things, so I kept bringing him back in. Eventually he just became part of the cast. It got to the point that when I added an obligate badass ally for an arc where they needed to smash the evil Arakhin cult, I introduced Adamant Ferrosang, another vulpine of the same race as the Vertiliaes. I wrote her in as his successor and student, an inquisitor herself, and still struggling to best the old man's skill with a blade.
I started writing the arc for his final days recently. magic and technology can only get you so far, and at 136, he's already lived pretty long. There were tears in the chat as a doctor announced the prognosis, that his blood toxicity levels from worn out implants and accumulated shrapnel were hitting a critical point, that he had less than a month to live.
The worst part is this arc is happening while Ferro is out in the field. She won't be able to be there in his final moments or attend the funeral. I have to write how losing a mentor that taught her for decades is going to affect her judgement and aggression.

    It is really, really good.
I was dming a game where we had a
    New player paladin
    Fighter,
    and a fighter eldritch knight
They had a special npc named Marvolo he started out as a really REALLY background npc nobleman but at level 5 the party was in a city named bryn shander and the fighter and the eldritch knight were persueing illegal activities and marvolo was helping. But then are paladin found out and went to stop the other players by any means necessary. In the middle of the town square he stopped Marvolo and the fighter who were good friends marvolo turned to the fighter as divine light shot around the paladin and pushed him to "GO run to the eldritch knight" Meanwhile Marvolo turned to face the paladin he was level three and all he had was 37 hp and a rapier multiattach against a 57 hp paladin with all the blessing's and smite you can imagine. as he turned to face this foe he rolled to hit first roll: 8 second roll NATURAL 20 Dealing 16 damage you could see in the player of the paladins eyes and expression that he realized this wasnt going to be easy. He attempts to hit marvolo and fails so marvolo attacks again hitting both times but then the paladin hit with divine smite and did like 36 slicing through marvolos blade. Marvolo with his last breaths THREW the remains of the blade at the palidin hitting him and doing some more damage. THAT is when the eldritch knight and the fighter arrived. the paladin ran in his weakened state because marvolo had done enough damage that the paladin thought he couldn't win. Marvolo at 1 hp a furrow planted into the bricks sword and armor both broken looked to his friends and smiled they healed him. And the Paladins player changed his character because he felt guilty. That was a FUN session to run.

I love Oohgie so much. I don't really ever cry at D&D stories like this, but oh man that ending got me! Good dwarf, best friend.

As that was so so sweet, that a get who lost his leg at such a bad cried for Oohgie of all men of woman to be so in touch with that big lug a sweetheart of sweethearts. Truly even war cannot chain a heart of pure good, I am glad Oohgie managed to achieve his dream. Long is may not have been a born Dwarf but by thunder he was a dwarf in soul, being a Smith is not just a matter of skill it requires creativity Oohgie had that in spades.
As a personal note to the Veteran who wept for Oohgie, I respectfully salute your sacrifice so we may play these games in a freedom you protected I wish I knew for sure your branch of service so forgive me for simply saying the motto I know best "Simper Fi" my good sir.

Stupid Autocorrect, I meant Oohgie may not of been born a dwarf but his spirit was one from the start.
