Acclaimed journalist Mehdi Hasan joins us to discuss U.S. media coverage of the Israeli war on Gaza and how the war is a genocide being abetted by the United States. Hasan says U.S. media is overwhelmingly pro-Israel and fails to convey the truth to audiences. "Palestinian voices not being on American television or in American print is one of the biggest problems when it comes to our coverage of this conflict," he says. Hasan has just launched a new media company, Zeteo, which he started after the end of his weekly news program on MSNBC and Peacock earlier this year. The cable network announced it was canceling his show in November. The move drew considerable outrage, with critics slamming MSNBC for effectively silencing one of the most prominent Muslim voices in U.S. media.
Hasan also warns U.S. media coverage of the 2024 election is largely unable to capture the threat to democracy posed by Donald Trump and the modern Republican Party. “We need to speak very clearly about what that fascist threat is,” says Hasan, who warns media outlets cannot “normalize his extremism and racism and bigotry,” because the right to free press itself could be under threat if he regains power. “One of our two major parties has been fully radicalized and is now in bed with white supremacists. … Let’s be plain about that.”

I am 75 years old and I know what's going on in Gaza right now. I am not Jewish nor am I Muslim but that has nothing to do with my empathy for others who are suffering. I watch news/podcasts and reports from Gaza by brave reporters who live there, on You Tube and a great variety so that I can determine what is truly happening. I was not aware of the history nor did I even understand what "occupied" meant but I got some books and educated myself about the history of the Palestinians and from what I learned it seems like they have been pushed around and bullied since the early 1900's. I am ashamed of my country...the U.S. and Biden who I voted for. I pray that some country has the guts to come in and help the Palestinians but they are outnumbered by the strength and military might of the powers that be....I don't blame them but my hats off to the Houthi's...they are courageous! They have the guts to proclaim the horrific actions of Israel and take action! I wish more people had that kind of courage.

I had some children of Holocaust survivors argue with me that the Israeli government was right…
It took me translating speeches from the Israeli government prior to October the 7th into German and putting them next to speeches from 1930’s Europe for them to understand what they were looking at and supporting.
Several of them broke down into tears when I showed them the speeches and the FOOTAGE that came with it and then put it next to current recent Israeli speeches and the footage that came with it.
It took one of them seeing actual footage of what happened to relatives of them after this sort of speeches was made to understand what they had been lauding as ‘needed’ and perfectly normal.

The US fears Israel selling more of its military secrets and hardware schematics to China. Israel has the US in a very tight box. Decades of support from the US for Israel is going to blow up in the US's face sooner or later. This isn't a Biden issue, this is a long term failure of the US military establishment. US media will go only so far in "reporting the news." And that's the problem. We need a fully funded, fully independent media in our country. We need the return of the fairness doctrine. We need to get private profit out of the news business. The movie NETWORK predicted what we have today as "news."

I've never looked away, since this began. I look for all I can. I've cried, and grieved and cared and still do. It's so nice to hear Medhi's quick mind talking. I like straight truth. I really appreciate Democracy Now, Norm Finklestein, Owen Jones and I've seen the images out of Gaza on Al Jazeera. It is madness indeed. Here we provide you bombs, and here we provide you some food. It's heartbreaking, and it's only a matter of time before an entire new generation of Hamas comes about, and it makes Jewish people more unsafe the world round. BiBi must go.
Bibi is symptomatic of the culture he lives within. That is WELL documented. See recent polls in Israel on how Israelis feel about the IDF's treatment of Gazans since October 7th, the vast majority think it has been perfectly okay, and about a third think the IDF should be even more savage. THAT is the culture in Israel, and it has been like that for a long time. Israel is a very conservative country, very militarist. And they feel utterly entitled to have dominion over Palestinians while covering little to nothing of the costs of keeping Palestinians (in Gaza and in the West Bank) under their collective boot. Starving them , expropriating them , not paying for their food, education, or health care .. they externalize those costs to the U.N.

I'm not exactly "young" (I'm 36 this year) but I too am disillusioned by the wests news coverage, here in the uk most media outlets are owned by the right wing so I see predictable patterns of racebaiting circle around when elections or votes for things like Brexit are on the horizon.
A prime example is if a white Christian does something horrific its just "guy does horrific thing" if its any other denomination you better believe they will put "Muslim/migrant does terrible thing" etc.. and then push the narrative that we need to "secure our borders" effectively making people vote against what in their best interest and turning our economy into a hellscape were only the top 0.1% come out on top. You have to wonder in todays economical climate were the rich are the richest they have been and the poor the poorest if this is all just a control method. like if we are all too busy hating and fighting people who are in the same struggles as us based solely on what they happen to have been born as, then none of us are looking at the people causing the struggles?
We have to have some actual non biased news. So I wish Hasan all the best in his endeavours.
