Since you mentioned him at the 3 point contest, Craig Hodges is actually another of the Larry stories. The man participated in all the contests that saw Larry's 3 wins, coming in second twice. He finally won in 89. A journalist asked him if the main reason for his victory was that Bird couldn't participate due to surgery on both feet. He said "Larry knows where he can find me."
Larry return comment: "I know where - at the end of the Chicago Bulls bench."

@@MarcTheSparcTV that and the Rodman talk are my favorite Bird trash talk stories.
As for the fight with Dr J. Everyone forgets that Bird had a more intense rivalry with Dr. J. than Magic at the beginning of the decades. Because Philly and Boston often had to go through each other to get to the finals.
Bird and Dr J. starting pushing each other and Dr J was not known for fighting. As they pushed Dr J's hands slipped up to Bird's neck. So in a split second they were literally at each other's throats and punches starting flying.
the other thing about players being friends today. Players can't stand on the same team for a long long time these days. It's super rare because of the salary cap/free agent rules. In Fact, they gave Boston an exemption from these new rules to sign Bird again if was able to play.

@@busterkeaton1001 Exactly right. Boston-Philly in the early 80's was as intense as it got. The Lakers won 2 titles in the early 80's ('80 and '82) but as good as they were, they were still just an afterthought for both Boston and Philly fans and players til '84 when Philly started to fade. That's just how intense the rivalry was.

Bird didn't invent trash talk, but he improved on it. He learned it as a youngster right on the blacktop. When the media tried to sell him as the new "great white hope" , he would have none of it, and rejected it outright. There were working men in his home town who would be balling on their lunch hour, or after work. They were all adults, and they were all black too... and he tells stories about how grateful he was that they let some young white kid play with them. And of course he picked up those trash talking skills early on from there. He IS, however, the founding member of the 50/40/90 club. And the originator of the dagger three point shot (remember, the 3 point line was NEW when Larry came in). He's that guy.

Two reasons he may have been the GOAT trash talker:
    1) He would very often not merely talk trash, but he would TELL YOU THE PLAY -- where he was going to get the ball and where he was going to shoot it. And then DO it, just as predicted. Who else ever did that even once? No-one as far as I know. Bird did it all the time.
    2) That fight with Dr. J. all by itself. Doc was as cool, calm, level-headed and classy a guy as any who ever played the game. I don't remember him EVER being in another fight with anyone. To get under his skin like that took trash-talking greatness...

One of my favorite Larry trash talking stories is told by John Stockton, when Larry went to the Utah bench before the game and said, "I feel like...43." Then scored 43 points before the 4th quarter, then sat out the remainder of the game. Or telling an injured Magic that since he's there watching the game he's gonna put on a show for him, and scores 40 points, making all but one or two shots.

@@MarcTheSparcTV The story about putting on a show for Magic wasn't really trash talking. They were friends then *but not during any basketball game* . Worse they were playing their number one competition. Boston vs. Lakers. This was past the time they shot that commercial for the shoe company Bird refused to do in L.A. because he hated that big city and attention. It was French Lick or not done. So Magic had a trailer and was going to eat his lunch in there. Larry had to run out there and say what the hell are you doing here? My mom fixed a big lunch for everyone (and I mean technicians and cameramen)
and he so he went trotting in to eat.
Georgia Bird was so excited and told him that he was her favorite player. Magic said that she was like another mother.
Bird said, "I finally knew the difference between Magic and Earvin." And I was Larry not Bird." Man to man he became my friend.
The Celtics called him "Cheesy" because of that toothy wide smile in the media. So they had a big poster of him tacked up on their wall in the locker room and threw darts at it. They aimed for his teeth. :P :P

It’s refreshing to see someone from this young generation show some attention and respect to Larry Bird
When I hear young people say Bird couldn’t play in today’s NBA I just shake my head.
If anything, Bird would’ve benefitted from the modern day weightlifting and conditioning.
He would be putting up more shots and his PPG would be higher
Keep this in mind, Larry grew up in a time when there was no 3 pointers. The 3 point line was introduced as a brand new concept in 79, the year he was drafted!
That means he didn’t grow up practicing from long distance, cuz no one did!
My point is had he developed that long distance he would’ve been deadly in today’s game.
The only difference might be that in today’s NBA Bird would play more of a Power Forward / Point Forward role rather than a modern day SF which plays closer to the old school SG role. He was too good a rebounder to stay out on the wings.
Also, today’s non stop screening and rolling off the pick would fit Bird’s strengths perfectly.
A lot gets made of Bird’s lack of speed, but before his back/feet gave out around 88/89 he was a solid defender and was crafty and gritty enough to make up for his speed issue.

  • @gregshirley-jeffersonboule6258

Larry is not about the most points, although he was the Clutch shooter, he was also double digit rebounder, ultimate passer and key motivator soul of the team. Listen to Magic talk about the dream team Olympics. USA was always ahead but when the put Magic and Larry in they would go up by 20 or 30 instantly. Watch Larry's greatest assists, I see some players passing off, but now the players live and leave by stats. Now its threes and a big man. His teammates loved Larry because if they were having trouble he would make sure they got the ball close to get their confidence back. Larry had a FEELING for the GAME. In respect to the 3 pt Contest, I have always thought that a jump shooter is at disadvantage during it. Larry Bird loved to shoot a set shot. You'll see some shooters, who are good 3 pt shooters, but are jump shooters i.e. they jump and utilize their legs in the shot. But in something like a timed 3 pt contest, a set shooter has a serious advantage! You are only losing a second with jump shot, but with all those shots, those seconds start to add up. The jump shooter has wait to come down to grab the ball, to line up the next shot. A set shooter, is reaching for the ball while their last shot is still in the air.

I don't know what vids of Bird you've watched, but if you still think putting more guys on him would solve The Bird Problem, you gotta watch more. He had such an incredible basketball IQ, was such a stellar, smooth, creative and sneaky passer, and had so many other tools in his kit, that that, together with the way the team played together and how plugged into Bird and each other they were, made either option-- one on one or more guys on Bird-- a nightmare.
If you haven't yet watched the re-edit vid. of his passing, you have a treat in store. I don't recall the video's exact title, but I'm thinking other commenters will, and it does have the word "re-edit" (and "Bird"...and "passing" or "passes" in the title).
(I couldn't take hearing you say again, when you saw him make the shot over not just Xman but the other guy as well, that you'd just put three on him-- I had to make sure you could find the passing video so you could understand how little that would mean to him, because he loved drawing multiple guys so his teammates were wide open for him to do his whatever-it-takes, creative passes to (including the mind-boggling no-looks, fake-outs and other misdirects). So here it is:
    czcams.com/video/267lD3MDDQY/video.html&ab_channel=VexReactsLive
I sure hope you watch and react to it if you haven't already. I'm going to check, but am leaving the link here just in case you haven't reacted to it yet).
As far as "anybody can score, just so it's not you," Bird or anyone else, and his consistent actions, made it clear he didn't care about that. What drove him was the obsessive need to win, regardless of how it happened. When he wanted the ball for a clutch shot, it was not for the glory, but because he believed he could make the shot and get the team a win. Watch how many times he passes when he could have easily made a shot, and you'll see this, and the videos that talk about his taking himself out of games once a win was assured, when he could have broken records, bulked up his stats, etc.is further testament to his motivation being the win rather than his own scoring.
Also, for even more evidence of his not caring who made the shot, so long as it was a Celtic, keep an eye out for how many times there are two and three guys on him and he shoots and makes the shots as if they weren't even there.
    Unbe-effing-lievable, da guy.

For example, in the first matchup between rookie Reggie Miller and Larry Bird (the one mentioned in the video), Bird lit the Pacers up and trash talked Reggie during the whole game, but at the end, he walked over, patted Reggie on the butt, and said, “Keep it up, rookie.
