He can’t help that the game changed and now taking a 3 with a guy right in your face is acceptable because of that got damn word analytics. That made todays game much harder for me to watch us old school guys like passing the ball to get the best shot not jacking off balance threes or guys shooting 30% from three yet they still shooting. Those guys should get a red light until they can show improvement. Until then you better not shoot a 3. But it’s excepted in todays game and it’s ugly basketball for the most part.

The craziest thing about Bird’s assists is that he wasn’t really a point forward like Bron. Depending on what point of his career you’re talking about, Tiny Archibald, DJ, or Danny Ainge usually brought the ball up for the Celts. Dude got 6.3 assists per game career playing without the ball in his hands most of the possession. The condensed version of his infamous left handed game, think it’s 2/14/86, is on YT. Aside from his audacity playing 3 quarters primarily lefty against a really good Blazers squad, that game really demonstrates how Bird operated in the flow of a game. Have a look at some Kevin McHale videos -- the greatest low post forward in the history of the game and killer shot blocker at the other end. Parrish is also VERY underrated. If he was the go-to guy on some other team, he would have had 24 ppg easy. He was the 3rd option in Boston but he was a terrific shot blocker and lane-clogger.

There is one thing that separates Bird from the rest and I have asked anyone to name another player in NBA history who did this as much or more than Bird. Bird would actually tell the opposing players and team what the play was going to be and where he was going to shoot from - and they still could not stop him. Byron Scott tells the story the best. czcams.com/video/h2iyF5dgiIo/video.html
In this story remember - Bird was playing against the Lakers who at the time had Jabbar, Magic, Worthy, Scott and Michael Cooper.

      Totally agree!
Ironically, there’s a handful of MJ subs that like to slide in “MJ did that as well.”
HAVE NOT SEEN OR HEARD OF “ANYONE” MATCHING LARRY BIRD’s BRAVADO!
Just as amazing, I have never heard of ANY Larry Bird Trash talking and not backing it up. The only exception that would come close is when he told Dominique Wilkins he was going to score 40 and only wound up with 39.
Insignificant. Sorry, Larry Legend! Only 98% on that one. LOL
That particular game has much more Psychological “Tell’s” (poker term) about
Dominique Wilkins and other NBA players of that era who anguished, suffered, and exposed Nationally under LARRY BIRD’s trash talking and backing it up. ALWAYS OVER LOOKED and NOT CALLED OUT IN REACTION VIDEOS is Dominique minimizing and changing the ‘points’ LARRY said he was going to score. Always emphasizing his ONE DUNK on Larry and following up with the statement “Larry Bird never Trash-talked him again BECAUSE HE KNEW..? that Dominque would keep COMING AT HIM.”REALLY? Keep in mind this was Dominique’s rookie year, First time playing against Bird at Boston Garden. Larry Bird NEVER TALKED TRASH TO Dominique Wilkins AGAIN?
The (Human highlight Reel) is a Classical case of displaying symptoms of “NBA PTSD.” Larry Bird was chronic trash talker that backed it up every time. How many other NBA STARS embarrassed on National TV in front of family, friends and fans fail to mention Larry Bird as one of the greatest. I realize that Reaction videos are slowly changing that.
I guess you could say, “Larry Bird is the Founder of NBA PTSD!” Just ask the Human Highlight Reel. 😂😅…👋🏻
ps) Dominique Wilkins was truly Amazing athletically. One of the best ‘Dunker’s in NBA history. Very entertaining to watch. Poor defensive fundamentals. The question begs, DW noted for top of the ‘food chain’ speed, agility, quickness, and leaping ability, how?… HOW? …did Larry Bird break DW ankle on a jab step-back? In the game against Atlanta where Bird scores 60 points, with DW nearly leaning on Bird in the far corner…does Bird rise above DW and shoots a 3 pointer so close to his face…” they could be related!”👀…Atlanta Hawks player falling off bench in laughter. Man, it would be tough playing against Bird.

You had some really good takes on this video.
I watched Larry's spectacular career and his whole story seems like something out of a movie. Yes, there is "Hoosiers", but it's about a coach and an underdog team that he leads to greatness. Larry's story is about "the greatest Hoosier" and how he came to be known as Legend.
A shy, small town boy from basketball hotbed Indiana like puts together a legendary NBA career that was defined by his amazing set of skills, unmatched ability in the most clutch moments and a work ethic that was second to none.
Larry more than made up for not having the natural athletic ability of many of his opponents by being the most mentally and physically prepared player and by giving the greatest effort. Some fans are awestruck by quick, high-flying players and their over-the-top athleticism. Sure, it's hoops eye candy, but ithe dazzle doesn't count for any points. The ball still has to go in. Larry wasn't very athletic by NBA standards, but he had a wide set of skills that he used to average 24-10-6 over a 13-year career.
He took the Celtics from a 29 win team the season before he arrived in Boston to a 61 win team his rookie year, and that was before McHale and Parrish joined the team. Larry led the Celtics to five finals appearances in seven seasons ('81-87), including three championships. In those five finals he averaged 23-12-6, including a near triple-double in the '86 finals when he averaged 24-10-9 for what many consider to be the greatest team in NBA history.
From '84-86 he won three consecutive MVP awards, joining Bill Russell and Wilt as the only players to have accomplished this. He was selected to the All-NBA first team in each of his first nine seasons from '79-80 to '87-88 and made the All-Star team 12 times. Each of his streaks were broken in '88-89 when he played in just the first six games due to season-ending surgery on both of his heels to remove bone spurs.
All twelve of the players who were on the '89-90 Eastern Conference All-Star team (Larry, Isaiah, Michael, Barkley, Ewing, Parrish, McHale, Dumas, Dominique, Reggie, Scottie and Dennis) are in the Hall of Fame and so are eght of the players who were on that year's Western Conference All-Star team (Stockton, Magic, Worthy, Hakeem, David Robinson, Karl Malone, Drexler and Mullin). Considering the incredible talent that Larry played against, his accomplishments are even more impressive.
Larry had the NBA's first 50-40-90 season in '86-87, shooting .525/.400/.910 and improved on it the following season shooting .527/.414/.916. He also won three consecutive three-point contests, the only ones he competed in. He is undeniably one of the most clutch shooters in NBA history.
Charles Barkley once said, "Larry Bird can't run or jump because that was God's way of keeping the game fair." Maybe he's right because can you imagine a player with the basketball IQ and mastery of fundamentals that Larry had in an athletic body like Michael's or Dominique's?

If it wasn't for Larry Birds injuries he would've been even better and for alot longer. He injured his back digging up a driveway. He also badly broke his knuckle and finger on his shooting hand in college playing softball. He says he never felt he had the same touch shooting after that injury. He had to adjust his shooting form a little. He still became an all-time great shooter! But I think if he grew up in this era with more importance on the 3, he would've grown up his whole life practicing 3's, and taking alot more 3's in games, which would've enhanced his scoring averages.
When he got injured in 88 he was just coming off his best scoring season averaging a career high 29.9 PPG and a 50/40/90 season where he finished 2nd in MVP. He was starting to shoot more 3's and I think would've averaged 30PPG for a few seasons. From 81-88 he finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd in MVP. He wasn't the same after 88.

His rivalry with Magic Johnson brought America to a standstill when their finals games. Larry is also one of the only people to have a winning record vs Jordan (more points against him in their head to head games and more wins in head to head games}. I know there are people that wouldn't think of Bird when making their top 5 all time team.... and they would regret it when they their team had to play him. Better to have Bird on your team than someone else's, because in his prime he was a straight COURT BULLY!!! He used to tell the opposing team what play he would win the game with and then shoot in their face and sink it double and triple teamed. Again, great video and reaction.

Larry was the Founding Father of the 50-40-90 Club; and currently one of only three NBA players to achieve this feat more than once.

I would love to see Luka become the next Larry! That would mean another generation of stunning and savage winning. But Luka would have to match Larry's shooting percentage, which for his career was nearly 50/40/90, at 50/38/89.
You have to look into Larry's brutal trash talking. No one talked like him. There are many stories out there, all from players who he trashed talked. Basically he'd tell you what he was going to do to you, then do it. Or he'd tell you that you can't stop him or do anything about it, then prove it. Look into John Stockton's story, for example.

Yeah Luka already has some tough playoff battles and confrontations where he never back down… he looks like the type to trash talk… he did tell Pat Bev he was too small, but I’d love to hear some in depth stories about Lukas trash talk

I grew up in Boston and idolized Larry. I live in Dallas now and while Luka can be Larryesque, he needs to work on his shooting more both from 3 and at the line. He also needs to put in more offseason work and not show up to camp 30 lbs overweight. Larry worked. If Luka wants the same career he needs to grow up a bit and put in the work. I don't mean to be overly negative about that, but he's had people telling him how great he is since he was 14. Someone needs to tell him, if he wants to be in the GOAT conversation, he's not great enough. Go put in the work.

Who else could tell people what he was going to do and still put up those numbers

  • @meminustherandomgooglenumbers

Dude, Robert Parish was bad ass. He was over 10rpg in 1978 and still over 10rpg in 1993, and his wierd high-arcing jumper was as unstoppable as Kareem's sky hook. He was dropping 19 pts per game as the Celtics 3rd or 4th option. If he was on a weaker team where he was the 1st option he'd have been dropping 30 ppg easy.
And Kevin was one of the most explosive post scorers in history and a very capable defender. Bird says on Kevin's first day in training camp, Bird got mad because Kevin was late, so Bird decided he was going to light him up, but Kevin blocked the first three shots Larry took on him.
The two of them are definitely in the same ballpark as Worthy and Abdul-Jabbar. The big difference is in the rest of the rosters, especially the benches. Laker's bench was so deep they could easily go with a 9 man rotation, but the Celts really had to depend mostly on their starting 5 and one or two role players at best.
