- Swamp Water is a 1941 American film noir crime film directed by Jean Renoir and starring Walter Brennan and Walter Huston. Based on the novel by Vereen Bell, it was produced at 20th Century Fox. The film was shot on location at Okefenokee Swamp, Waycross, Georgia, USA. It was Renoir's first American film. The film was remade in 1952 as Lure of the Wilderness, directed by Jean Negulesco.
Plot
A local man, Ben (Dana Andrews) encounters a fugitive Tom Keefer (Walter Brennan) from a murder charge while hunting in the Okefenokee Swamp looking for his dog. The two form a partnership in which Ben sells the animals hunted and trapped by both until townsfolk become suspicious. Also, Ben helps Julie, Keefer's daughter, who is living in straitened circumstances clean up and look more decent. Keefer is accused of murdering Deputy Shep Collins, but it was really the Dorson brothers who did so and then perjured themselves in evidence against Tom Keefer, assisted by Jesse Wick. Ben makes Wick confess so that Keefer will not be blamed anymore. He tries to take Keefer back to town where he can live a normal life, but they are shot at by the Dorson brothers. One of them sinks in a mudhole, and Keefer talks to the other man, saying he wants a normal life, and lets him go into the swamp. Ben and Keefer are found by the townsfolk. Once back in town, Keefer cleans up, and goes to the dance, smiling.
I'm 62, and only watch movies from the 40s, 50s and 60s and some movies from the 30s. These movies show me that as much as I like special effects in movies, I would rather see GREAT acting and a GREAT story line with older great actors than today's quick spit outs with younger actors with next to no acting experience and no life experiences to portray events in life that they still know nothing about.
So many great character actors back then.
Agree 100%. I'm 78.
Totally right! These 3 stars are all just great actors!
I’m 20 years younger than you and I seldom watch anything made after 1965. Too much trash.
I'm 62 as well so, right there with ya 👍
Thank you for all these great Movies. Im a Disabled Veteran and it really helps with my pain watching movies from the good days. Im 64 🇺🇸
Love you.
Thanks buddy
Thank you for your service and escape from your pain for a little while God bless these movies will help
Thank you for your service 🙏
Thankyou for keeping us safe...❤
Anne Baxter is radiant.
Yep, I have always thought she was attractive
Gary, Yes, she is like a feminine sun.
@@sgt.duke.mc_50 Attractive? She's absolutely stunning.
I've noticed.
Hollywood just can't make movies like this anymore, the talent just isn't out there, either in front of the camera or behind it. I'm 79 and love this movie, many thanks to whoever decided to air this.
In 98 % of the cases your are correct..the vast majority of actors today couldn't act to save their lives but there are a few exceptions with the likes of Tom Hanks and Morgan Freeman and a few other older ones that are still around.. Clint Eastwood has managed to crank out some really good movies in his 80s and 90s..
This show was so clean. Nothing dirty, innocent love scenes. Very entertaining. This was real, human, and the best show! Why would we want to see trash on regular TV?
We dont!
Why would his dog be in a swamp.
@@patsywhitten4739 Chasing wildlife.
Except for animal abuse.
Boring women arguing with each other trying to be top woman. Those reality shows have ruined TV.
The best movie I've seen this month !! Walter Brennan never fails to pull it off !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love you Walter and wish there were more actors like you !!!!!! R.I.P. !!!!.
Never
No Brag Just Fact !
This is my all-time favorite Walter Brennan role.
Just saw a Dana Andrews interview from 1979. Do you know he said THIS was his favorite movie out of all the gems he made. He said they actually went out to that swamp and made it on location. He said he was young so it was a huge adventure! He said the story was so good, of humble good people and that he just loved it.
Thanks for that info. I would love to find that interview; I'll look for it. Dana Andrews is one of my favorite actors. No one can match his work in "The Best Years of Our Lives" when he is sitting in the nose of that abandoned plane.
@@girlfromthebronxbywayofelb7288 As much as I love many of his films, that 1 and another that I think is called The Northern Star are my 2 favorites. The Northern Star is the one where he and Anne Baxter were both in the Ukraine during 1of the World Wars. They travel somewhere in a group and get attacked by a plane on the road.
He also made a lot of films with Gene Tierney, who I also love.
Andrews was born and raised in Collins MS and the south, about the same latitude and climate as the Okeefenokee. It would have been natural for him to be there, like at home.
Mosquitos, snakes, and gators heaven.
@@carlreed6186 I thought the movie was so stereotypical of how people view Georgia. I was like, Oh come on! Then I read where it was actually filmed here and thought, Never mind.
Awesome flick filmed in the swamp. Modern movies will never match up to these classics😊
and it will only get worse with AI.
That was an all-star cast! This has to be the first and last time Walter Brennan ever got top billing.
WHAT A GREAT FEEL GOOD MOVIE! LOVED IT! Walter Brennan was a truly great actor.
A hidden gem. A young Anne Baxter, Dana Andrews, Walter Brennan, John Carradine, Ward Bond. A great story! And the dog didn't die! So many of this genre have to kill the dog. I was impressed with the twists and turns in the story and the quality of the acting. I am truly glad I stumbled on this film.
Yes but they drownkittens ....!..of great actors ...but 5 min into don't like things happen to animals ...never heard a this ole movie .
My kins fr Alabama... cottonmouth ...ooo..😳
Wow ..got bit by that cottonmouth & lived!!!
I could not have said it better, mark. Thanks for your comment.
@@karenhill3970 It's a movie! They didn't drown anything. They just pretend to do stuff like that. The actors would refuse to do it, if they were just killing animals for no reason.
About a month ago I saw a different movie here on YT, where they pretended to kill a goose. It was off screen, and it was SO OBVIOUSLY FAKED, but there were about 6 or 8 people who were all whinging about how the movie should be removed, because of the murdered goose. It was the stupidest thing ever. I couldn't believe there were that many gullible people!
Back when this was made, even if some men acted like hard asses, most men were the same as now. And women never needed to act like they don't care about cruelty. So if the producers were hurting animals many of the actors would say "I'm not doing this."
The scene with the cat was at 9:35 to 10:21. And they didn't even simulate killing the kitten! All they did was talk about it! Use your head!
I'm sorry to sound harsh. But it would be better for you to learn to think things through and not believe ANYTHING you see on CZcams or tv. There are so many people lying about so many different things, and you could get badly hurt by believing them. Only believe the things you see CONCRETE PROOF of, with your own 2 eyes.
I’m currently halfway through Chase a Crooked Shadow.
Many hidden gems to find after.
Question. Why ... is not this movie super famous???? What a great presentation of humanity's beauty!!!
Interesting fact: Virginia Gilmore (the blond) was married to Yul Brynner and had a son, Rock Brynner. She died at age 66 of COPD.
wonder was she like her character in real life. I met Yul and thought he was nasty.
Hi from Germany and thank you for the great movie.
why the hell do people like you always have to say when someone died???
Great movie, I grew up on these beautiful old movies. Im 68 years old
I'm an 80 year old totally disabled Army vet from Georgia. I've been to Waycross GA where this was filmed. My Dad grew up not far from there. First time seeing this movie, and boy what a gem. Walter Brennan was in another movie living in a swamp along the Pascagoula River is south Mississippi. Good bye My Lady. I have it on video tape and have just about worn it out. I lived on the MS Gulf coast many years ago not far from that swamp. I guess I just love these kind of movies. Thanks for posting, really enjoyed it.
I remember growing up movies with Walter Brennan in them. He was always an old character actor. Seeing early movies with him in them makes me realize what a fine actor he was.
Some people believe he was born 65 years old! 😏
Acting good, nasty human being.
He was a great actor, he’s the only one who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar X3
@@francesfarmer736 Thanks! I didn't know that! I doubt many people do.
The Real Mccoys is where I first saw him.
This is where I have spent my entire life. Right on the edge .
Me also. I grew up in the Everglades. Keep it like the back of my hand. Never feared going hungry. I miss it.😊
Love the Okefenokee!
Wonderful! Anne Baxter had a natural beauty.
And she's such a wonderful actor. One of the best, and so natural!
An oldie but a goodie.
The best acting job dana andrews of of his career
I'm 72, and I have never seen this film before. What a gem. Anne Baxter was such a beauty! Thanks for uploading this forgotten film.
Love these old time movies, I'm 66 years old and I'm sick and tired of watching movies that use the Lord's Name in vain, that's why I love watching the older movies...
God Bless You All 🙏🙏🙏
Brilliant movie ! Never seen it before. Thanks a lot. Colin UK 🇬🇧
The Mother land, and all our cousins, from USA with love.
Excellent,not a boring moment.
When I was a child during the summer. I attended a camp we had all types of activities we would participate in. I like to drink mountain dew well in the south where the camp was there version of mountain dew was called swamp water it also was in a green bottle. When I saw the name of the Movie this wonderful memory popped into my head and I had to share it with you. Thanks again Oh the movie is awesome.
Thanks for sharing.
Never heard of it and never saw it before but this is is a GOOD MOVIE. I was very surprised by who all was in it and what a great production it was. I have been in the Okeefenokee and this picture utilized the real thing.
How can anyone not like a movie Walter Brennan stars in?
This is a great one!
Full of great characters.
Great movie! The last time I visited this part of my home state we took a night ride through the swamp and for GA that night got very cold! The only good thing we had going for us was that the gators were in deep water. Needless to say I was glad to make it out safely!!!
I would never set foot within 100 miles of croc country!
Dana Andrews and Anne Baxter are just wonderful in this
Never saw this movie and it sure was a good one! I wish it had been longer with more story but not complaining. Tha acting was great. Thanks for making it available. I was born that year!😅😅😅😅
How had I not seen this before? What a great movie! Now one of my old favorites. I'll watch it again. Beautiful. Thanks so much!
great movie, all-star cast, loved it
Intensive story, great cast, beautiful photography, impressive scenery... thank you!
What a great movie. Wish they made more
A great film I enjoyed it very much with a great ending👍
Excellent movie. Thank you.
Excellent movie, thanks very much for sharing it with us ! In my opinion the best Walter Brennan's acting ! What a rough and wild south , the swamps are much more impresive than in " Distant Drums "
Well they both used real swamps, but it is more atmospheric filmed in black and white. I like the look of this film better also.
What a cast. And that last half hour got DARK! Great tension in the moments Dana Andrews is proving he didn’t sell the old guy out. That’s how you get a reaction from your audience. Thanks for a first time watch.
Thank you for the great movie.
Love Anne Baxter.
❤
Greetings from rural Southwest Texas
Great story line and great cast. I'm amazed at the acting talents of Walter Brennan and Dana Andrews. Before this movie I thought they were both mediocre actors but they were both very convincing in this movie and the storyline is on par with something John Steinbeck would have written. Thanks for posting and sharing.
Dana Andrews was a great actor, watch Fallen Angel 1945, the acting and dialogue is incredible in that movie
Don't forget either what the director of this film, Jean Reanoir, brought to the production. Jean Renoir a true master of the art of the Roland Barthes term "Punctum".
The Best Years of Our Lives
Jean Renoir was a great director. Thank you for letting this classic be seen.
Im 73, missed this one as a kid. What a cast.
Aaww! Loved the ending!
Great film. All these guys so young. Wow 👏
Not my first time watching this one. A great movie. Thank you DK. I still don't feel any less fear for Crocodiles.
That was an excellent movie
What a movie I never heard about it before I never seen it before it's a real work of art
Superb movie
characters portrayed well with good casting
everything done well in this flick
POETIC JUSTICE this story is genius
I would not like being in a swamp.
Great cast & wonderfull performance by all particularly Dana Andrews & Walter Huston.
Wonderful movie. Loved Trouble and deep Kudos to that talented water moccasin. Ole Moc should have been credited (and Trouble too!). From now on I will always see our own local Arkansas water moccasins in a more favorable light. Thanks for sharing this good movie.
Your comments are very Funny.
It has taken 8 months for someone to appreciate your good humor. But now you are getting your due! Haha!
Best Wishes from Montana! M.H.
I saw this movie when I was a kid back in the 60s....the one scene I remember was getting snake bit!
Very entertaining movie, just go for it! THANKS
Fine film. An attention keeper. Wish we still had films being made like this. Thanks for posting.
I never saw this gem of a movie. Great story with great acting. Please show it to film students so they know what a great movie is.
Excellent! A very beautiful film in many ways and great actors. Including Trouble
What a great movie!!
It’s so rare and wonderful to see one so well put together that I haven’t already seen!!
Amazing cast too!!
Thank You 😊
I love hounds, they are my favorite dogs.
Thx love good older movies 👍🇺🇸👍
I didn't know about this movie. Jean Renoir is a fantastic filmmaker, and the cast is superb, just like the quality of the upload. Thank you very much for posting it!
A fine film! Had no idea that Jean Renoir directed it. Also, I have always loved Dana Andrews, and the wonderful Walter Huston is really doing justice to his role. Love films of the 1940s!
had a couple of tears at the end thank you DK love tim
You are so kind for your keeping on uploading!
Happy new year!
And all best wishes!
🤗🤗🤗
Happy new year.
I really enjoyed the movie, thanks for posting..
Fantastic movie, thank you DK C, what an enjoyable movie
Dana Andrews, Anne Baxter and Walter Brennan starred together in another movie called “ The North Star” … worth checking out. Aaron Copland wrote the score. Lillian Hellman , the screenplay. Ukrainian village invaded by the Nazis during WWII. Farley Granger , Eric Von Stroheim , Jane Withers also in cast.
Dana Andrews, definitely one of the best ever. I believe he had difficulty with alcohol. Such a shame. When you realize how much he accomplished in his career, imagine how much more might have been achieved without the alcohol. Dana Andrews forever! 📽️🎟️🍿🎭
Andrews eventually was able to overcome his addiction and went on to crusade as a spokesperson for the National Council on Alcoholism.
Thanks for that info. Good to know!🎭🍿🎭
It sure is good to know! I've always had a warm spot for him, and the knowledge of his drinking problem always made me sad, so I'm so glad to hear he beat it! ❤
Walter Brennan is amazing . This ain't no Disney movie , it's way better !
A real treat great story well acted and atmosphere
Best damn movie I've seen in a month of Sundays!
What an awesome movie!❤
I love the way these movies make you feel reminds me of when my grandparents were alive what kind of movies they watched and makes me feel closer to them
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. Thanks for sharing. GBU
I live a stone's throw from Walter Brennan's old homestead ranch in Oregon. The Big Red barn with a white OK is still standing and is as beautiful as ever. He has a house in town too. I believe both are on the historical registry.
It's a very unique barn and very, very well maintained. He built the house in town for his wife so she would agree to move here. It's rugged beautiful country, only one road in or out. The road runs out at the foot of Wallowa Lake, summer home of Old Chief Joseph and his band of nimíipuu. I can see why this Hollywood cowboy fell in love with this country. Very secluded and quiet. Breathtaking mountain ranges in every direction. Hundreds of pristine alpine lakes and meadows. 🎉 Cheers from Joseph Oregon.
Thank you so much for all you do!!!!
A honest depiction of living standards
What a gem!!! Walter Brennan deserved an Oscar for every role he played! Thank you❤
anne baxter's character reminds me of gene tierney's character skittering around in Tobacco Road. I love to see Walter Brennan younger and slimmer. LOL thanks for posting. NM
Great movie!
There's nothin like a good waterboarding to get someone to talk. 😊
Excpt it didn't.
They said this film has everything in it.
Swamp Noir with the fingerprint of Renoir! 🐊 Thank you for sharing this one. The Southerner is another good one Renoir directed, and The River. Among many others. Very interesting filmmaker, the IMDb comments on Swamp Water are enlightening, too.
GOOD MOVIE ENJOYED SEEING THE YOUNGER ESTABLISHED VERSION OF THE ACTORS, THANK YOU.
Many thanks for the posting of this movie!! It was enjoyable from start to finish!😊
Dana Andrews and Anne Baxter 👍👍👍👍
What a wonderful movie. Great actors,great,story. Thank-you ✨
wow that was a great movie thank you so much
An excellent movie. Walter Brennan never disappoints.
Amazing cast, setting, and story. What a find! Brennan was never better, including Rio Bravo. Thanks!
I'm 76 and I've never seen this movie. This has a great story line filled with fine acting from many well known stars. I highly recommend it. Four stars from me.
Wow. What a grand movie, and story. Amazing videography which didn't come easy in those days. 💖
A truly beautiful movie full of fine acting and perfect direction. They say Dana Andrews was wooden but this was Oscar level ability and every bit as good as his performance in The Best Years of Our Lives. Andrews epitomizes the American character at its zenith. Bravo.
I never knew how good these old movies were until i saw them again
. Heartwarming and moralistic.
Wow- even Ol' Trouble did some fine acting with the rest of a star-studded cast. I did FF past the part with the Kittens :( The plot has as much suspense as Film Noir pic= a hidden Gem. Thanks for This DK.
Yes, the part with the kittens altered my mind so that it took some of the joy of watching the movie. Somehow they could have let the Anne Baxter character have victory over the cruel environment she lived in and let her grab and scurry off with the sack of kittens. I know it's just a movie, but movies are often a window of reality, and reality is often cruel. Let's pray for better days. They are coming, let's pray we are ready.
@@michelridgely5140 Prayer is a must. God needs to see we trust Him.
What about when they repeatedly near- drowned the man?! I've never seen anything so barbarically cruel so casually received!
@@michelridgely5140 All they did was talk about it. They didn't even simulate killing kittens. Sheesh!
I'm 69 and this is the first time I've seen this. Wonderful movie! Dana Andrews was really good in this! I was impressed! They all were!
That was a real good movie.
I really enjoyed watching it.❤

GREAT AWSOME MOVIE 🎬 THANK U 😊🙏
I watch a lot of old movies and I can say this is one I thoroughly enjoyed. What's not to love? Gorgeous Dana Andrews, beautiful Anne Baxter and the wonderful Walter Brennan. Wouldn't fancy the swamp though!
Thanks utube for a wonderful movie. I first remembered watching Walter Brennan on the Real McCoy's tv show. Even though he was no older than Dana Andrews at this time he always played the grizzled old man.
THANK YOU for posting this film.
Creativity , good story and good acting, no sensationalism and some of my favorite actors 👍😁
What a great movie. Thanks for sharing it.
